Would Jay-Z be the GOAT if he just stopped at the Black Album?

Musically, he still would've had work to do. Jay's discography has too many inconsistencies, even up to that point. But the shit he accomplished outside of rap was due to him being as good as he is at rap in the first place. You're not gonna be a multimillionaire by being average at something your whole career. I give Jay his props for sticking with his guns and opening doors only he can in his position.

At this point it's building your legacy and becoming more than just a ''hiphop'' legend but a ''music'' legend.

A rapper like Jay Z or any other rapper that just spits bars be it Jadakiss, Canibus, Fabolous, Slaughterhouse, Nas, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Pun, Big L, Talib Kweli, Jay Electronica etc can never be a music legend or will ever in a billion years be accepted as 1 as they just rhyme bars don't do anything besides rap

To be a music legend u have to offer musicality and be diverse and creative artists like Eminem, B.o.B, Kid Cudi etc who not only rap but sing too, perform their own hooks singing them, produce, even sing in verses sometimes

Jay Z fan base is also 99% males

There has never been a pure rapper who is a hip-hop purists fave that will be a music legend and it will never happen

Rapping bars using very complex double entendres, word play, punchline, multi's, rhyme schemes, similies, metaphors about Mafiaso content just making words rhyme for a living is and never will be enough to be a music legend

Ironically most of those cats, especially the bolded, are already legends.

Even more ironic, B.O.B and Kid Cudi are still too stuck in their niche to do anything legendary. And I fucks with both of them.

Would Jordan still be the GOAt, if he stopped with the 98 bulls????

Jay had a lotta wack performances since he came back. But he still won a ship with a classic in American Gangster. ..

N he had a lot of 50 point performance in terms of singles...

Stop with the basketball references, them shits is corny. There are plenty of basketball players with rings and they contributed little to nothing at all to the success of their teams. Jordan is who is, because, he did things on the court that other players had never done. Same with Magic, Wilt, Kobe, AI, Russell, Robertson etc etc. The number rings doesn't give any indication of a how good a player is or isn't.

Goat imo

He still the GOAT rapper, & even in his flabby & sick state he still an elite rapper & lyricist w/ the GOAT flow...:umad:

BP3 & KC are both good 3/5 jawns, AG & WTT are 5/5 classics featuring Hov's two best post-retirement performances, & MCHG is great 4/5 album feat Hov's most introspective & personal content yet...:umad:

Let's not even talk about the plethora of features he's bodied :umad:

Shit, Hov such a beast his post-retirement career shits on most rappers' primes in terms of both skill displayed & music released, & that's despite it featuring his 2 worst albums...:umad:

KC - BP3 he was sorta shaky, but post BP3 he's been on some other shit & solidified his GOATness even more :umad:

Hova Da Gawd :umad:

i never t thought the black album was all that...i fuck with am gangster way more

overall i think jay still dropping good music

American Gangster was trash. The flo wasn't crisp, the beats were decent but nothing special. FOH calling that shit classic. Everything after Black Album sounds like hes strictly rapping just to keep his brand relevant. Shallow subject matter, choppy flo & absolutely no hunger. The nigga lost it

Not my favorite but one of my favorites. his legacy is already set. also American gangster is one of my favorite albums of the decade so Im kinda glad he didnt stop......and all the other post retirement albums had some great tracks on it also and he still killing other rappers on they shit, ask ross and jeezy. his guest spots on those jay electronica songs are epic too. dude still got it if you ask me

and since that shadyteam slutbag is back why dont yall ask why eminems punk ass didnt retire after eminem show

Em been dropping heat tho, jay been dropping dog shit, get your poopa scooper.

Nas my favorite artist but Jay had the best career (when taking into consideration skill+achievements - and no don't bring up Eminem, he got boring real quick). If he stopped after Black Album the argument would've been stronger.

American Gangster wasn't as good as I received it. WTT was good but one could say that was more Kanyes creativity, BP3 meh, MCHG weak.

His best track since retirement is the Grammy Family Freestyle - explaining that he's a corporate commercial rapper [Flex Bomb!]

Black album was 2003 by the way, but if he stopped there and dropped a classic verse time to time (put on remix, free mason, diamonds remix, black republican, etc..) I wouldn't look at him as the goat but the general consensus most definitely would and the anticipation for a new Jay album would be like Detox/Dre3000/Jay Electronica times 10
