Jay-Z - 'Magna Carta Holy Grail'

I held out on getting the album until today. Just gave it the first run through on my way in to work. My initial opinion is "meh....it's aight", but maybe it'll take some time for some of the songs to sink in. I've got two problems w/ the album so far. I think there could've been waaay better production on most tracks. I mean gotdammit, you Jay Z you can have damn near any beat you want. wtf? Some of the joints got that "generic south beat" vibe. Not digging that shit at all. I won't nail him to the cross for that just yet....after all if Yeezus grew on me after subsequent listens, I can give Hov a pass for now. My other issue is the lyric quality. I'm not really sure if Jay is just losing it lyrically or if he is intentionally dumbing himself down to cater to the prominent rap demographic at this time. I got all the double and triple entendres....easy...cool. I absolutely hate the new "out of breath" flow he's been doing the last few albums. Not sure if that nigguh really having trouble breathing or if he thinks that shit is dope. It's not dope Hov. I'm expecting that nigguh to pass out from lack of air at any moment. Overall though....that shit was light. I laugh now saying that after previously watching the video of dude saying "maaan that shit was light". Picasso Baby was the only track that immediately got my head noddin like "yeaaah....that's wtf I'm talking about". Oceans is cool. Jay Z Blue is cool. Nickels and Dimes is cool. One or 2 others are cool out the gate. I'm going to have to rewind on the others a couple of times to see if they grow on me. If nothing else...at least this shit is better than BP3 and Kingdom Come.

After listening to the album a few times last night. its just a good album nothing more nothing less. Maybe its because i cant relate to a lot of lyrics or because i prefer the more depth lyrics by Jay. He just seemed to be having fun with this album but also put out a quality project. Its better than so many other rappers joints out there. The bar is so high for Jay. he does what he wants though.

If the album really was banging motherfuckers wouldn't be backpedallling and pussy footing in this thread. It's a fucking shame niggas in here are forcing themselves to enjoy this album. Mchg is 100% perception 0% music. This camel isn't playing any instruments or writing sheet music. This is a rap album about a 49 year old 4 legged homo speaking on his money and drug dealing stories from the 1980s. Niggas really need to stop with this creative shit. There is nothing stimulating about Jay Z lyrics or flow on this album. MCHG is for low self esteem niggas who just want to be part of something. Fuck outta here with that balance shit. No jay z didnt balance his album he half assed it. He took some of 2 chainz flow, a little bit of Keef, put some 808 rolls behind the production and here you have factory processed rap music from Samsung. How can a New Yorker even say they are proud of this album?

MCHG>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Yeezus

But watch which one recieves more praise in the press!!

You late lol.

The "serious" critics have already declared it a silly little "traditional" hip-hop album that pales against Yeezus' transcendent brilliance.

lol.

Pitchfork gave Yeezus a 9.5 and MCHG a 5.8.

lmfao

If only the critics were as harsh/honest with Kanye as they are with Jay-Z. I feel like this nigga Kanye now just get obligatory awesome reviews.

He believes it's his 4th best album? Nah... I can give you a couple bars off AG that nothing on MCHG can fuck wit.

Now ya tumblin is humblin, ya fallin ya mumblin

Under ya breath like you knew this day was comin

Now pray that arm candy

That you left ya ex for stay down and come in handy

Nothing on MCHG, not even Heaven, has lyricism of that depth. Not to mention that AG was cohesive as fuck.

4th best? Nah.

Exactly.

And that line was so ill b/c he came back to it at the end

'Locked down, the town now belongs to the squares

Who say they won't make the same mistakes that got you there

And ya arm candy's sweet on 'em

And THE woman that you left for this heffa got a college degree comin'

Random thoughts

-A year ago there was a thread about how the next Jay album should sound. I remember back then I posted that I wanted him to drop a hard and straight rap album with no too much pop shit and features, I didnt think it would happen but he did it. The beats are top notch from beginning to end, and hes delivering on most tracks. This is almost exactly the album I was hoping for

-I was disappointed with Holy Grail you cant put Mickey Mouse Club Justin on a hard ass beat like that, shit is wrong. He really shouldve spit all the way through that shit with no hook no feature on some Dynasty intro shit, the beat was perfect for that. Jay been known for his classic intros and this couldve been another one

-Why did Timbaland go to the listening party as a nurse

-lol @ at those Jay took such and such rappers flow claims. Man if yall gotta go that route at least name some rappers that have some kind of nice flows to steal from. I read Gucci Mane and Chief Keef in here, the fuck? Inb4 "Tom Ford is a good track but he clearly jacked Bruse Wane vintage flow on that last verse smh"

-Dont get the hate for La Familia, it was nothing extraordinary but a decent song. On the other hand I'm not feeling BBC like most people do, Nas and Hov came with it but I dont fuck with that beat too much.

-I hate to say this but how can that Miley Cirus line really go over peoples heads, shit is real simple too smh.

-I never seen Tomp sound so shook wtf. Usually his rants do have a couple valid points, but them last posts look like he dont even know what to hate on this time. Buttuh come get your idol bruh

Please explain how 'Twerk, Miley Miley, twerk' went over our heads, sir.

"I'm anti-Santa Maria/

Only Christopher we acknowledge we is Wallace, I don't even like Washington's in my pocket"

Oceans goes hard as fuck! Quickly becoming 1 of my favorite Jay tracks ever.

Still digesting the album though. Copped the physical this morning and listened all the way thru once. About to hop on the interstate, zone out & give it the road/whip test. But Oceans, FUTW, & Heaven already stand out after 1 complete listen.

Feds still lurking

They see I'm still putting work in

Cause somewhere in America

Miley Cyrus is still twerkin'

What I took is that he's still moving coke, white girl, in America.

Thats the funny thing about some people who point out Jay z lines. Yea his lines r witty, but sometimes, especially now, they're not as deep as they think. Lol So it just exposes them

They point out a rather simple line n you just look at em like 'Ngga, thats deep to you?'

@nahson I'm looking at you...sir.
