Was It Just Good Strategy For Jay Z To Wait Til Nas Was At His Weakest and He Was At His Strongest?

No, Takeover accomplished it's goal. Nas was dead in a grave until Ether came out. Nas was flatlined. That's why on the Stillmatic intro Nas said "I crawled up outta that grave, cleanin off the dirt, wipin my shirt."

There are no rules to this shit. Jay did what he thought he had to do.

The question was this: good strategy or bitch made? If a boxer waits until a formidable opponent has been injured to spring a challenge do you really respect that?

Some champions are accused of this (see Money Mayweather vs an aging Pacquiao)

I give Jay credit for making his move. Big was gone.Tupac was gone. He believed he could take the spotlight for himself by handling Nas.

He should have stopped just shy of takeover.

Excellent point. The illest thing about Ether is that Nas flipped Jays line, "I will not lose" and handed Jay his first L. It was like a 3 dimensional entendre.

You actually hafta consider where the disses started to see the big picture.

Bleek dissed Nas on "Mind Right (Memph Bleek Is)", which launched the disses back from Nas. Nas wasn't entirely out of the picture at this time.

People forget that Ether wasn't the first diss from Nas.

Jay sent his little homie Bleek to throw that diss and when Esco chopped him up the Boss had to step in or Jay wouldn't look like a boss.

Wouldn't have mattered anyhow. NaS showed Jay he was more potent on the microphone than he was (if you look at their history as musicians Jay has been influenced more by NaS with musical ideas than the other way round)

You have to remember it wasn't only NaS that was mentioned on 'Takeover'.. Mobb Deep too

That's because Nas and Jay had a conversation mid war and they both agreed not to make it a Queens versus Brooklyn situation but it really was on the low

Ha! I went to a NaS concert in '06 when he was promoting HHID and midway through the set, the intro to the instrumentals on 'Ether' come on for a few seconds ... crowd went wild! And this was a year after the beef was squashed and Jay signed him to Def Jam

However no lyrics were uttered though

Jayz was mistaking himself thinking Nas actually fell off not knowing that the original I Am album was a potential classic. with it getting leaked he had to rush out the Nastradamous album. he thought it was over for Nas, so he decided to do a full diss feeling himself too much and got his and his whole labels ass lit the fuck up on top of Nas dropping his 3rd classic. proving that besides the Gawd Ricky, the TRUE ruler was back. this is what happens when you underestimate your competition

It's neither "smart" or "bitch made". It is what it is. Like I said in the previous post there are no rules.

Yo, they been tossing subliminals back and forth since 'It Was Written' ..... after Jay used the sample on RD .....then it spilled over after Bleek fired off a shot thinking Nas hit him with a shot ....

Imo, I never seen Nas having a weak point ..... lyrics 97% of the time on point .....beats, not so much lolz

I think it was just an opportunity that came up and Jay-Z capitalized. On the one end it gave him credibility and fuelled fan boy debates of "who really won tho when Jay 'signed' NaS ?" and on the business side, for Defjam was a good pick up for them to sell records and enhance Jay's reputation as a CEO.

I don't even think it was that deep, if it was NaS wouldn't have signed to him. I do think that NaS needed the money which is why he almost signed to Murder Inc. and why he agreed to sign in the first place. If you look at NaS now he's more entrepreneurial, that's so that he never has to rely on a record label again.

NaS was trolling with the Murder Inc. shit... . He stated he had no intention to sign with them

No, Takeover accomplished it's goal. Nas was dead in a grave until Ether came out. Nas was flatlined. That's why on the Stillmatic intro Nas said "I crawled up outta that grave, cleanin off the dirt, wipin my shirt."

Nas was considerd done before that due to I Am and Nastradamus, Oochie Wally verse etc...

If anything Jay helped him resurrect his career...

Lol @ Jay killed him for 3 months then Nas went on the release 3 critically acclaimed projects in a row and ethered Jay...

Yup Takeover accomplished it's goal...

Foh...

Jay regrets it. That big lip comment will live forever. Joe Camel

It wasn't smart because Nas bodied him , but I'm glad he did cause it woke Nasir back up and off that oochie wallet shit and it made Nas take the mic away from his wack ass brother.
