Brooklyn based rap star, Jay-Z astounded fans and foes alike when he announced his plans to sue rival rapper Nas for libelous comments made last year. The two artists had been feuding through out the later part of 2001. The battle culminated in Nas's release of the Stillmatic album and the song Ether, which made several references negatively portraying Jay-Z as a homosexual and threatening anti-gay violence. Homophobia and gay discrimination, which has ravaged hip-hop in recent years, will be a partial basis for the suit says Jay-Z's lawyer, Mathew Winters. In addition, Jay-Z is claiming career and lifestyle damage. From 98-2001, Soundscan and the Billboard Top 40 established Jay as the music industry's top rapper. But sales of his records and Rocawear clothing line were down almost 40% in 2002. Nas on the other hand has boasted increased publicity and platinum sales in the last year. Jay-Z's legal team is claiming that Nas not only intended to damage Jay's career but also to launch his own off defaming statements. The hip-hop world has already responded with shock. Haitian rapper/singer Wyclef Jean responded saying, "Battling is the essence of hip-hop, it's been its basis for years." He went on to say, "Hip-hop started with battles in the park. What [ Jay-Z ] is doing with his suit is ridiculous and is further [evidence] that hip-hop is dying as an art form". Ridiculous or not, Jay-Z's suit is unprecedented and will undoubtedly usher in a new era of lawsuits." Paul Vaugner Associated Press

I've talked with E-40 many times in Oakland, and he always talked about how fun it would be to kill a poor Biggy.

It is not Bay Area style to use hitmen. *That **** has no respect to it. If E-40 had serious enough beef to take out BIG, him and his click (no pun intended) would have handled matters themselves.

I don't think it will ever go back to the way it use to be. Back when rappers controlled what they wanted to say. Now they let the record companies tell them what's hot and what to make.

ICE-CUBE CONCERT

Has anyone seen the Ice Cube tour? I just saw him last Thursday

in Rochester, NY, and it was probably the best rep concert I have ever

been to.

The show started with a 15min set from Rochester's own, KMC. Nobody

really seemed to care that they were on stage, anyway. Then WC AND MAAD

CIRCLE performed for about 20min. They are reletively new so the crowd

still wasn't that involved. Then DEL came out for about 30min and rocked

the house. But it just kept getting better with LEADERS OF THE NEW SCHOOL

(Busta' Rhymes is somethin' else!) and with BLACK SHEEP! When they did

"the choice is yours" the house came down. And finally (YOYO was sick)

Cube entered Gangsta style and did everything from "***** you love to hate"

to "how to survive in S.Central" to "jackin for beats".

The funniest part of the show was that he had tombstones on stage

that read "NWA", "EASY-E", etc. And in the hallways there were murals

with had drawn pictures of NWA with captions like, under EASY: maggot

turned ***got. And so on.

The most disturbing part of the concert was that you could get

you picture taken with a cardboard cutout of Cube (looking like a hood)

while you hold an UZI at the camera. DEL seemed to encourage

drug use by telling people to smoke Buddha and lowering a giant joint

from the roof.

What up homes?I have just bought the latest Gangstarr 12" called Mass Appeal

and i have 2 say it is the SHIZNET!Guru never fails 2 dissapoint and once again

Premier digs up dope beats from the crates.The album ,which i heard is top

quality and Gangstarr is in there 4 the 94, so u better recognise.

On another note is the Nasty nas shit that's just dropped- the 12" It ain't

hard 2 tell is slammin and follows up nicely 2 the Halftime 12" he dropped

a few years ago. I have also heard a few tracks from his illmatic l.p
