I think you should have to prove that you're competent enough to be a good parent. If adopted parents have to go through a process of showing that they can be suitable parents, I don't see why biological parents are 'entitled' to raise their children just because they're genetically related to them.

I don't believe that governments should prevent people from actually having biological children, not out of a deontological respect for autonomy but because it would probably have very bad consequences.

all sounds great til YOUR parents are being reviewed and judged and your dirty laundry comes out.

If my parents are/were bad parents, I would want them to be reviewed and judged in the same way as any other parent. This isn't anything personal, and I wouldn't want it to be.

Its funny how you types always talk this shit. Its usually about population control. "its too many people! The world is over populated!" But you wont kill yourself and your family to help remedy that.

You seem pretty passionate about this, so if I offended you, I just want to let you know that it wasn't intentional or personal. I am not one of these "types" (whatever that means) that you are referring to, and I've made this clear a couple of times. I already stated in my original post that I didn't completely believe in all this. The intention of this thread was to get people to talk about what I believe to be a relevant issue. Maybe I was playing devil's advocate. Anyways, I think that we all easily decided early on that gov't control will never be a good idea.

I also think that you have misunderstood me about the term "population control". I wasn't really talking about overpopulation or anything like that. But even if I was, I wouldn't see killing yourself and your family as a solution of any substantial or reasonable worth. I think that kind of argument is pretty weak imo.

I actually think that my parents are relatively good parents. And I still believe that there are clearly "bad" parents that continue to harm society in direct and indirect ways when measures could be taken to prevent this. But I still have no idea where all this bitterness of yours is coming from though. Again, it's nothing personal.

Ideals like yours are flawed because they are all based on YOU being the standard of acceptability. But who says YOUR parents shouldnt be punished for your upbringing? OHHHH thats right....you were raised just right. You turned out great right?

1. I don't think that I based anything on myself or my family (again, I would like to reiterate that this is nothing personal; this really isn't so much about me) and I would not want to do so at all.

2. If you check back on previous posts, I think that we have already come to some kind of a resolution on this issue. Some things we have already disagreed and agreed to, and I think that we have already come to a general truth about this issue. But of course, the whole gov't control thing is a bad and flawed idea in itself.

Who's the judge? YOU? Grades? Certificates? Awards? Trophies? Jail record or lack thereof? Career path? Voting record? Your idea is unrealistic.

If you take away the poor the intelligent people wont fi this country. The upper middle class will simply become the NEW poor. Not to mention how poor people spend the most money in this country (on bullshit mostly).

I can't make out the first sentence here. But as for the rest, I don't think that population control (specifically the one I was talking about) would target a certain class or a certain "intelligence". So I don't see any of that happening. But once again, that's irrelevant because gov't pop. control is very much a disagreeable solution.
