Haven't seen the movie, so I'm just going off of what Iv'e been hearing.

Basically, I don't think people really have a problem with Spike doing a satire.

The problem is with it being "bad" satire.

Basically, if the satirical context had resulted in a better movie.....there wouldn't be as much criticism directed his way.

There's something to be said about timing, and elements of hype. Compton was a good album that i still sit with, but as a dr dre fan, i wanted the chronic 3, a detox album that was unapologetic in its west coastness.

We knew a chicago movie was coming because that situation needs awareness brought to it. Everything in the universe was screaming for a raw, long, immersive native driven drama that made me understand chicago's hood culture better, and their twist on the problems we face. John singleton does this very well for cali. In a vacuum its a good movie, but i understand where niggas comin from if they salty.

Niggas wanted detox, and they got compton, but compton is still slick.

I think the problem comes in with how the film was marketed when it was first thrown out there. He called it Chiraq. He went around saying he wanted to bring light to the situation there in the city. He got a lot of support for the project for that and had the people in Chicago believing in the project. Then he releases something that really doesn't have anything to do with Chicago based on what Rhymefest said. Honestly, I think Rhymefest had it right. Spike could have filmed it in Chicago, but he probably should have just kept it as being some generic city and not try to promote it the way he did.

Full disclosure - Ive never been to Chicago and I haven't seen the movie..

But I have seen the trailer and heard reactions and reviews such as this one. I also know the hurt that city is going through

To me it's incredibly disrespectful and disengenous to make a satire, of all things, about the devastation being experienced in that area.

I mean - the name itself is inflammatory.

It seems to be the epitome of gross generalization to no positive end aside from money changing hands ..
