The Official Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2 thread - Now Playing "AntMan"

It's only been a few days since Edgar Wright exited his adaptation of Ant-Man, and Marvel Studios is still very much eager to find his replacement and go into production in time for the film to meet its July 17, 2015, release date. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, insiders think the studio's president of production Kevin Feige and co. may not be able to pull off the "risky" movie, which is scheduled to launch the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Sources say the film's key crew -- its heads of departments -- departed when it became clear production would not begin as scheduled July 28," notes THR article. "[Paul] Rudd's reps say he's still in, and a source close to the production says all key crew positions will be filled shortly." In addition, the trade magazine's insiders claim that Marvel wasn't happy with Edgar Wright's take "for weeks," and Feige had "ordered revisions of the script that was co-written by Wright and Joe Cornish." Wright was open to the revisions, but as previously reported, there were additional rewrites from within Marvel's camp without the director's input. After receiving the new revisions, it was then that Edgar Wright left the film he had been working on since 2006, before Marvel Studios was relevant.

The Hollywood Reporter article goes on to explain how Kevin Feige's company "Marvel-izing" its adaptations has brought them into conflict with some of its previous directors as well as its stars. For example, Kenneth Branagh on Thor, Joe Johnston on Captain America: The First Avenger, original Thor: The Dark World director Patty Jenkins, and even Alan Taylor. And there's already a recent editorial on Comic Book Movie detailing the verbal scuffles that Marvel Studios has had with a handful of its actors. Anyhow, the source further notes that Edgar Wright's Ant-Man may have been "too quirky" for them, espcially since they already feel James Gunn's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy is "out of their comfort zone." "Kevin Feige [and his top lieutenants] run Marvel with a singularity of vision, but when you take a true auteur and throw him into the mix, this is what you get," says one of The Hollywood Reporter's sources. "They don't want you to speak up too much or have too much vision. People who have never worked there don't understand how they operate, but if you trust them, they have an amazing track record."

Honestly, these directors needs to get over themselves. Its like they don't see the big picture of what Marvel is doing with their universe. I like Edgar Wright a lot, but this is not YOUR movie or YOUR characters, it's Marvel's. Any director chosen for a Marvel film is simply there to best project Marvel's vision, not interject their own. If Marvel wanted that they would've kept farming their characters out to other studios. They are obviously trying to avoid what has happened to the X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, etc. at all cost, and right now, they are winning. Fuck they need your input for? How you goin' tell them how to run they own shit or do it better? LOL.

Plus, why walk away from something you have been working on for almost 10 years? If he is that passionate about Ant-Man, does he really think he will get another opportunity to work on anything Ant-Man related without Marvel co-signing it? So what if its not exactly what you would have done? Its still an Ant-Man movie backed by Marvel. What more could you ask for? You know it won't be terrible no matter what. This movie would've taken his career to a whole 'nother level regardless.

Reports are saying Wright didn't want to include "franchise characters", which to me reads as he didn't want to adhere to the overall story and universe Marvel is trying to tell with each phase. Like he just wanted to toss Ant-Man out here as its own quirky, completely separate thing outside of all of the other connected movies. Of course he got the boot.

How you gonna have your own vision for a movie if everything is just directed towards Avengers 2 and 3 ?

I will admit this has definitely hindered the marvel movies a little bit.

Rumor: Josh Brolin Is Thanos in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

We saw a tease of Marvel’s big bad Thanos at the end of The Avengers, but the purple-skinned alien has been absent from the screen since then. What we do know is he’s in Guardians of the Galaxy, and there is reason to believe he plays a part in the eventual third Avengers film as well. (He is not a big part of Age of Ultron, according to Joss Whedon.) We also know the actor who played Thanos in that Avengers post-credits stinger won’t play him in upcoming movies. So who will?

Latino Review claims Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin, star of The Goonies, W., No Country For Old Men, Oldboy and more is playing the baddest man in the galaxy. Read more about Thanos Guardians of the Galaxy below.

Latino Review broke the news which we have to consider a rumor until Marvel officially confirms it. They claim he’ll provide the voice in this film.

There had been rumors that Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the film, would play the role because of his physical similarities. But until today, the identity of the character has been one of Marvel’s most closely guarded secrets. Brolin makes sense though. He’s a big name, has a similar imposing physique, and fits in with Marvel’s idea of casting fantastic actors as bad guys (James Spader, Tom Hiddleston, Jeff Bridges, to name a few).

So what is Thanos’ role in Guardians? Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn explained,

We’re definitely connected by Thanos. This is the first movie in the Marvel cosmic universe. We’re connected to the rest of the [Marvel Cinematic] Universe. How that plays out is gonna be seen as the future comes along.

Prior to that, Joss Whedon had talked about his use of the character:

Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful; he is not someone you can just trot out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on. The thing about The Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.

That doesn’t tell us much but, Drax and Gamora are both pretty important characters in the Thanos mythology. It should all fit together come August 1 when James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters.

Every movie has been self involved, leaving one particular plot line open for the next movie. Same as comics, every story leads to another story. What's the big deal?

Now Adam McKay Is Reportedly Directing ANT-MAN...

Earlier this morning, three comedy directors—Adam McKay, Ruben Fleischer, and Rawson Marshall Thurber—were reported as potential contenders to helm Marvel's forthcoming Ant-Man movie, following Edgar Wright's unexpected exit last week. Though The Wrap has since declared Thurber (We're the Millers) a front-runner to direct the 2015 Marvel adaptation, Ain't It Cool News now reports that it is The Other Guys director Adam McKay who is in final talks with the studio. "Marvel made the offer this afternoon, and both sides are expected to work out a deal," claims the site. Given that both sources are considerably credible, we won't know for sure which director is actually the front-runner until we hear "shortly" from the horse's mouth, or Marvel's. However, should Adam McKay nab the Ant-Man gig, it would re-team him with Anchorman actor Paul Rudd. In addition to The Legend of Ron Burgundy and its 2013 sequel, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, McKay's directing credits include the hilarious Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Step Brothers and The Other Guys. The frequent Will Ferrell-collaborator also penned those action/comedies.

Anyhow, with Marvel announcing a director soon, Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena and Patrick Wilson, and will release July 17, 2015.

Update: Anchorman Director Passes on Ant-Man

Just when it seemed the Ant-Man director drama was over... It's not. Adam McKay, who'd officially been offered the job and begun negotiations to take over as director has now taken himself out of the running, THR reveals. They say it was his decision alone.

With Marvel saying Ant-Man would still make its July 17th, 2015 release date -- and production needing to begin soon for that to happen -- the pressure is on for Marvel to find a new director fast, hence all the quick updates occurring on this situation. As of last night, it looked like McKay was going to be that guy, but now the search continues...

Kill the project, focus on BP, Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel since they have polished drafts. They've already changed the continuity so Pym has no affect on Ultron or The Vision, Pym is not needed as much as this point if they can't use him well.

Yeah, if this shit comes out July 2015 it's likely gonna be a clusterfuck
