Update: Anchorman Director Passes on Ant-Man

Just when it seemed the Ant-Man director drama was over... It's not. Adam McKay, who'd officially been offered the job and begun negotiations to take over as director has now taken himself out of the running, THR reveals. They say it was his decision alone.

With Marvel saying Ant-Man would still make its July 17th, 2015 release date -- and production needing to begin soon for that to happen -- the pressure is on for Marvel to find a new director fast, hence all the quick updates occurring on this situation. As of last night, it looked like McKay was going to be that guy, but now the search continues...

Kill the project, focus on BP, Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel since they have polished drafts. They've already changed the continuity so Pym has no affect on Ultron or The Vision, Pym is not needed as much as this point if they can't use him well.

you don't know either of the bold points for sure

http://screenrant.com/marvel-doctor-strange-movie-sandy-126430/
http://screenrant.com/marvel-black-panther-movie-2014-kofi-177159/

Pym's known for a few things, Pym particles, Ultron and beating his wife. So if they aren't going to do the size shifting superhero and Ultron is now going to be a Stark creation, they might as well drop it for now and come back to it later, if they ever do.
"having a script" is in no way an indication of being able to simply switch out ant man for another hero. They go through re-writes and touch-ups to get it how they want it and how it'll all work into the marvel universe.

Similar thing for ant man. just because that's all he's known for in the comic universe doesn't mean that's all he'll be known for in the movie universe, and because of how marvel plan everything out years in advance, you don't know that they have the ability to switch out ant man for another character without it affecting what they have planned.

Rob Liefeld the co-founder of Image Comics and X-Force creator recently tweeted to his followers that Marvel Entertainment is attempting to undercut any and all support of the X-Men franchise.

20th Century Fox who owns both the rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four, have not seen any marketing for their merchandise, and apparently it’s all on purpose. X-Men: Days of Future Past is doing very well in the theaters, yet you do not see any toys or X-Men comics being pushed to support the recently released movie. On the other hand, you do see more Spider-Man, Captain America, and very soon Guardians of the Galaxy toys and comic merchandise being distributed heavily.

This is what Rob Liefeld’s tweet conversations consisted of (edited for clarity):

X-Men: Days of Future Past will match If not exceed The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s domestic box office, meaning lots of eyeballs, but there are no toy tie-ins. The Fox shut out is real.

It’s not money that matters in this strategy, it’s the hearts and minds of kids/toy buyers, not-too-subtly communicating what’s “important.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 toys everywhere, X-Men – zippo. No promotions from toy aisles. Starve those properties. Makes X-Men [box office] comeback impressive!

No emotion in these facts/reporting, it’s just numbers and business. But the messages are clear.

X-Men: Days of Future Past toys would get in the way of upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy onslaught of toys.

Bottom line, it’s a ballsy move to downgrade properties with high profile, big budget support in favor of stuff you control wholesale. Gotta respect it. And equal respect to those properties slugging it out without equal support across multiple platforms.

You gotta understand, I love this stuff!! I love the business of comic films/brands and the unique situation Marvel has with their licenses.

My un-informed prediction: Sony will split producing/financing w/Marvel on next Spidey film and open door for inclusion in Avengers 3.

Rob Liefeld predicts that Sony and Marvel could co-finance and co-distribute upcoming Amazing Spider-Man sequals to cross over into The Avengers.

I don’t know about you, but this is very very very big news for the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the good ole web-head is going to join forces with Cap, Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor.

The possibilities of this crossover occurring now is high since VFX was recently moved to Canada by Sony, and the lackluster response from the recent Spider-Man movies in the box office; it looks like Sony might need assistance for their big budget films.

I'd have to know how much money goes in and out of toys to decide if that even matters. In an age where videogames reign supreme, a lack of toys may not warrant any concern for Fox, especially if they can sue Marvel for copyright infringement for modeling their toys after Fox's version of X-Men.

Spiderman in an Avengers movie makes almost 0% sense at this point. Even if Marvel is content know they'll never get Spiderman back, helping the competition sustain itself isn't smart at all. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 shows that Sony is already starting to fumble their franchise even after a reboot. If I were Marvel, I'd let them continue to fuck it up until they completely give up the rights. It'll probably take a decade but hey...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I do want Spidey and F4 included in the Marvel Movieverse. I DO NOT want the X-men there. The X-men is a big enough franchise to carry it's own universe. It will just complicate things to try and cross them over to the Marvel Movieverse.

Fantastic Four and the wallcrawler should definitely be in there just because they both pretty much live in manhattan which is a frequent target of alien invasions lol.

As Marvel keeps hunting for its “Ant-Man” director, the company continues to move forward with its next phase of films, tapping Scott Derrickson to helm “Dr. Strange.”

Talks are still early, but sources say Derrickson, who most recently directed “Sinister,” is Marvel’s choice and a deal should be struck shortly.

Marvel had no comment.

The pic will be produced by Kevin Feige, who, over the years, has repeatedly said how badly he wants to get a “Dr. Strange” movie made. Executive producers on the project are Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Stephen Broussard.

The comicbook revolved around a former neurosurgeon who serves as the “Sorcerer Supreme” — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange made his first appearance in the 1963 comicbook series “Strange Tales” and would go on to have his own comicbook series and would appear in several other comicbooks that included “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man” and “Nick Fury.”

Marvel has teased Strange in several pics including “Thor” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and Derrickson’s commitment only moves things forward in getting the good doctor his own pic.

Derrickson and Marvel will now look to cast its title character, and while there is no front-runner at this time, expect a decision in coming months.

Derrickson has been a rising star that Hollywood has been chasing for their big projects after the success of his horror pic “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” which earned $144 million at the worldwide box office.

He followed that up with another horror pic, “Sinister,” which overperformed at the box office and helped gained the attention of Hollywood. With execs always looking for directors that can pull the most out of their budgets, Derrickson is a very attractive talent, with both “Sinister” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” costing less than $20 million but bringing in more than double that in profits.

Marvel is hoping Derrickson can bring the same dark and eerie storytelling style to the “Dr. Strange” story while not breaking the bank on the budget.

He is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment.

His next pic, “Deliver Us From Evil,” bows July 2 and stars Eric Bana and Olivia Munn.

How Much is Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy?

Warning: Potential spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last week, it was revealed that actor Josh Brolin had been cast in the role of Thanos in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Since the character's debut at the end of Marvel's The Avengers in 2012, we've known the mad titan would be a presence in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe and that he would appear in some capacity in this summer's "Guardians," but to what extent remained a mystery. Now, Vulture reports they have learned how we'll be seeing the big man in the film, so we're going to issue a spoiler warning for the time being.

Vulture claims that Thanos will appear in the first act of Guardians of the Galaxy, albeit as a hologram and not in person. He'll continue to appear this way for much of the film and is reportedly referenced by other characters throughout, though he does have one scene where he appears in the flesh, sharing the screen with Lee Pace's Ronan the Accuser and Karen Gillan's Nebula. So it seems that once again Thanos will be the puppeteer, waiting in the shadows for his big debut, which presumably will come during The Avengers 3.

Written and directed by James Gunn, the film also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Gregg Henry, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker and Vin Diesel. Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1.

Another Director Passes on Marvel's Ant-Man

Another day, another director bows out of directing Ant-Man, this time in the form of Rawson Thurber.

Best known for his work on Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story as well as last year's surprise hit, We're The Millers, This is Infamous is now reporting that Thurber has turned down the opportunity to direct Marvel's upcoming flick.

A range of other names have been linked to the project as well, including Anchorman's Adam McKay and Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer, though both have since apparently turned down the opportunity to take the reins on the film following Edgar Wright's abrupt departure.

Seeing as the studio is still promising to keep the movie on schedule for a July 17, 2015 release, the pressure is really on to find someone sooner rather than later. With so many big names reportedly jumping ship, however, it's looking increasingly like a poisoned chalice. As soon as we have any more news we'll let you know.

DOCTOR STRANGE - Does Marvel Want Jared Leto

dr-strange-movie-writers.jpg

Following on from the announcement of a Doctor Strange director, Badass Digest has suggested that Marvel is interested in casting Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) in the title role!

jared-leto-variety.jpg

With the announcement that Scott Derrickson is set to direct a Doctor Strange movie, an interesting claim from Badass Digest has popped up. In an article reporting the director announcement, the site says that they "have also heard that Marvel likes (or liked, I don’t know what the current status of this is) Jared Leto for Stephen Strange." The article speculates that the entirety of Phase Three will be unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and says to "expect Derrickson - and whoever is playing Strange - to take that [Hall H] stage." Previous actors rumoured to play Strange include Johnny Depp and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but nothing has been set in stone. Leto recently won an Academy Award for his supporting role in Dallas Buyers Club after taking a break from acting. This is still a rumour, but he certainly has the chops to pull it off, with a big acting range.

First Review of Gaurdians of the Galaxy?

*Warning* The Review Contains Possible Spoilers

This came in last night. WARNING: There are some light SPOILERS in this review so read at your own risk! I been hearing nothing but positive things about the movie. After reading this I am now totally psyched to check this out!

-EM

Open on young Peter Quill. His mom is dying in the hospital. She gives him a present and keeps talking about his father being an angel. She dies and he runs outside, only to be abducted by an alien ship.

Flash forward twenty years and millions of miles to a desolate planet where Peter Quill, now Star Lord, relieves an abandoned temple of the silver orb you've seen in the trailers. Korath shows up with some Kree goons, but Quill escapes and heads to the home of the Nova Corp where he plans to fence the artifact for cash.

Meanwhile, Ronan the Accuser gets the news that Korath has failed in securing the orb and is none too pleased. Turns out he's promised to retrieve the orb for Thanos, who, in return, will destroy Xandar for him. The Mad Titan is so adamant about this orb that he even let Ronan borrow his two adopted daughters / augmented a$sassins, Gamora and Nebula.

Gamora heads out to Xandar to find Quill. Meanwhile, fortune hunters Rocket and Groot are on Xandar looking for a quick buck as they scan the locals for anyone with a bounty (Stan Lee cameo alert) when they come across Quill.

Peter attempts to sell the orb to an underhanded antiquities dealer, but when the trader finds out just who is after the object, he has second thoughts and kicks Peter out; and that's when Gamora, Rocket, and Groot decide to nab him. An elaborate chase sequence plays out through the streets of Xandar, but in the end, the Nova Corp spoils the fun and arrests everyone.

As Quill, Rocket, Groot, and Gamora head to The Kyln for lock up, two important things come to light: One, Peter was not working alone; he was supposed to share the orb's spoils with fellow space pirate Yondu who is livid and willing to fly across space for revenge and two, Ronan and Nebula have problems with authority; While visiting Thanos' flying throne rock, Ronan and Nebula have harsh words for the Mad Titan's right hand man, The Other, after he lectures them about showing respect for his master (things don't turn out well for one of them). This scene is the only one where Thanos is present (he pops up again later, but only on a screen/hologram for a few seconds). The Avatar of [rip] a$sures Ronan the plan is still in place and that Xandar is toast if he returns with the object.

Space prison is not pretty for the four future Guardians, especially Gamora; being the (adopted) daughter of Thanos has made her plenty of enemies, Drax the Destroyer chief among them. After Gamora gets cornered by vengeful prisoners, Drax stakes his claim as the one to k!ll her and almost does, but Gamora a$sures him that she has no love for daddy and that she'd love to take out her father more than anyone. Things calm down long enough for Rocket to devise a plan to escape, after which they'll head to the mysterious Collector who will pay enough for the orb that all of them can retire and go their own ways.

With Drax along for the ride, they manage to escape and head to the giant Celestial's cranium where The Collector talks all things infinite and gem-like, giving the Guardians a demonstration of the danger lurking within the orb: the purple gem of power. But things quickly turn south inside Knowhere as both Yondu and Ronan arrive looking for a f!ght.

I love Marvel movies, but I was scared to see this because I was worried it was going to be bad. The movie is in a tough position because it is full of unknown characters it has to introduce together (unlike every other MCU origin stories which only had to focus on showcasing one character), it's got some really goofy space/animal elements to balance, and it has to set up Thanos and the Infinity Gems which will obviously be a huge corner stone of the MCU. Not only that, but James Gunn is a risky bet. I loved Slither and his PG [..] series, but I was disappointed by Super and the Scooby movies. Mix both those elements together, a complicated movie that needs to bend in a lot of directions and a hit/miss writer and director, and what do you get?

A great movie, as it turns out. Granted, the effects aren't done and a lot can change between now and August, but if they keep on the track they're going, it will be solid. I don't want to spoil the fun, so here are few things that surprised me:

Unlike any other Marvel movie. A lot more comedic than expected.

Ronan, Nebula and Yondu look amazing.

The prison escape sequence is brilliant.

As expected, lots of neat easter eggs in The Collector's collection, including a cosmic puppy.

Rocket steals the show. Bradley Cooper's voice is perfect.

But that doesn't mean the others don't shine - they do, especially Drax. I was impressed with how well you knew most of the characters by the end.

The soundtrack plays a huge part, both in the setting tone and being part of the story.

You find out where Peter Quill and the team get their names.

Bottom line: it's not perfect. There are parts that drag, some action sequences that aren't as strong as one might hope, and some puzzling/unexplained motivations. The good news is that there's time to fix these things and, even if they don't solve everything, it'll still be a lot of fun. No matter what, I will absolutely be in line to go see it opening day.
