The personalities are different. Vegito has more of vegetas appearance and arrogance while gogeta acts more like goku and is a little more to the point.
Yeah I know, it's two different characters but it should create the same character.
Is it like when your parents have children and you have a brother or sister who have the same genetics as you but just in a different order?

The fusion thing is wildly confusing.
There are many different types of fusion in DBZ.
The earrings which are permanent. Both characters consciousness still exist, it's pretty much two characters sharing one body...this is how Vegito explained himself.
The dance which lasts for 30 mins. They become a new person but has the consciousness of both characters. Gotenks for instance acts more like Trunks than Goten but he is neither Trunks or Goten. When asked what his name was he said "Gotenks" meaning he is his own person.
And the Namekian fusion technique which is basically one Namek absorbing the powers of another. He doesn't become a new person but supposedly the absorbed character still exists within the other. So technically speaking both Nail and Kami are still alive inside Piccolo...
Now here's more mindfucks:
Buu absorbs characters and they are still alive inside him but he can use their powers and to some degree he becomes a new being but whatever he absorbs still have a measure of control over his consciousness. For instance Evil Buu ate Fat Buu and Fat Buu still had control over certain parts of Buu. Buu absorbed that Kai fella and it changed his personality, this was consistent as his personality changed when he absorbed Gotenks, Gohan and Piccolo as well...
But Cell is Cell, regardless of his ability to absorb the androids he doesn't become anything new just a stronger version of himself. They become apart of him and they have no control or consciousness within him. He merely evolves. They have no control over what Cell thinks or how he behaves.
So is Buu like Cell in the fact that he merely evolves or is he a new person? Buu seems to believe he is a different person (Majin, Evil, Super), Cell does not (Cell is Cell).
Gotenks and Vegito recognize they are fusion characters. They have their own names but personalities based on the strongest personality within them (Vegeta and Trunks respectively), that puts Piccolo in this category right? Piccolo recognizes that he is three people in one body but believes he is neither Piccolo or Kami and for awhile he didn't want to be recognized as either Kami or Piccolo. He stuck with the Piccolo name to keep down confusion.
