The Y-DNA haplogroup is always tied to the Y-Chromosome, which is passed down from father to son. Therefore you got your Y-DNA from your father, he got it from his father and so on. If this pure male lineage is from Europe, there is a probability of about 50% that you belong to the haplogroup R1b1a2.
You are correct, as the Y-DNA haplogroup only defines the pure male lineage,
it does not affect physical apearance and not only people with european ancestry have this haplogroup, it is just more common among europeans.
If your pure male lineage is not european a DNA genealogy test might nevertheless be of interest for you.
