For anybody that really wants to know what the vibe was like in New York, I posted Doo Wop's Summer Jam 96 mixtape in another thread. You'd have to listen to the entire tape to have anything intelligent to say.

If you haven't heard Doo Wop's Summer Jam 96 mixtape you can't really comment on the climate of Hip Hop in 1996. Niggaz in New York were copping mix tapes. CDs and tapes weren't really selling.

new York was no longer the heart of hip hop in 96

and that mixtape is trash

Wtf are you talking about bruh? New York ain't lose its stranglehold on hip hop till the mid 2000's

the west coast dominated hip hop in the 90s. from oakland to la the heart of hip hop was definitely in cali throughout the decade. and when the west started to slowly decline the south began its ascent and we took over. after that the whole idea of costal dominance began to fade. the culture had become so ubiquitous that no coast could truly claim the crown. from oakland, to houston, to detroit to pittsburgh every city had a well established scene with at least 1 well respected artist. the culture is too big and generates too much money for any 1 coast to claim supremacy. and with the internet anybody from anywhere can put their music out and have it go global. its not like it was in the early 90s when you only 2 choices. hip hop is everywhere and no coast can make a true claim to the throne now b/c the throne is global

This is what I mean by looking at the whole picture and being objective. The West was on top til the mid 90's but NY was still strong and producing more legends and more classics than any other city. Then from 1997 to about 06 NY was producing the numbers and classics.

The West just recovered in 2013, with 1999 and 50 giving the Game life being the exceptions.

nyc was trash between big and dmx. '97 was the midst of the dark ages for nyc unless you liked that puffy, mase, jigga, shiny suit bullshit. it wasnt until dmx dropped that anything out of nyc was even worth listening to. outside of 50's run who else had a nationwide run of L free success?

Revisionist history like a muthafucka SMMFH. First off Jay-Z was NOT a big artist in 96, he was lower tier at that point. He could have dropped a diss and it would have fallen on deaf ears behind the Chino XL, Lil Kim, Mobb Deep, Ryan G, and other wack ass disses (shoot me Jayhova Witnesses, yall prolly wasn't even old enough to know what was going on at the time Pac was HUGE). Jay couldn't even kill NaS' career on wax so FOH about him killing Pac's career.

I don't understand how this thread went 12 pages after this post

Nigga your signature is a guy cleaning the blood off his Timbs. That's NY culture, you don't do construction.

Who says I don't do construction?

I'm from the east, but I could still admit who made better music back then, I don't have a bias like a lot of ppl around here

You not from the east no more. As of today your east citizenship just got revoked.

You ole mark ass trick ass buster

First off.....I'm a supporter of Jay Z, but let's be clear though.

He rose to fame only after the deaths of 2 Pac and Biggie. If those two were never killed, there's a very high probability that Jay Z would have never became the Jay Z that we know today. He would've been just another artist that attempted to chase his dream.

True

And if hitler and japan had developed the atomic bomb first and dropped it on america, we'd be done for and germany would rule the world. And we'd all be bumping some german rock stars and eating bratwurst.

Lots of ifs and coulda and shouldas

Example:

Ross had a huge 2010... yea Teflon Don was dope. But the reason Ross had that crazy year was because ;

1.the south was running Rap. N the front runners of the south were idle that year.

2. Jeezy dropped in 09',n took 2010 off.

3. T.i N Wayne were in prison.

All those things left a lane open for Ross.

Jay became a major factor in rap in 98..

In 96, 97 jay was still finding his idenity n was very green.

By 1998, two of the major players of the mid 90's in pac n big were dead. the other guys like Nas , was idle. Snoop was leaving deathrow n headed to a new market. Dre was tryna find talent for aftermath...

For the west coast

Suge was locked, so no new talent for the west, cause deathrow was frozen.

The south was gaining more exposure with the rising of Outkast, No Limit, N Cash Money.

However, The east was still going strong after losing biggie because, Puffy n bad boy held it down in 97... also ushering the shiny suit era.

a wave JayZ Rode , go listen to vol.1... look at the singles..

The thing was, in 98 the streets was tired of that shiny, glitzy , flossy shit, and the mafioso shit jay was on in 96, got stale.

in late 97, the streets of NY was gravitating towards this young dog from Yonkers who was making alotta Noise, his name was DMX ... defjam saw that n took a chance on dude, n when X dropped those singles in early 98 the streets ate it up cause, they were starving for that street shit.

Jay saw that, n reinvent himselff be incorparated alot of the hardcore edge n sound to his music... n the rest was history.

Tl;dr

Cliffnotes: jay changed to the world around him as circumstances changed, just like every successful entity, person, corporation does.

Just like pac himself did.

They don't hear you though

In the early 90's the west only dropped 2 albums that was worth a damn.

Doggystle and the Chronic.

After that it was back to business on the east coast.

In 95 when 2pac joined the row is when people started to fuck with them again. And that was due to pac popularity.

If I recall correctly he was the only nigga on the label putting out music.

So again what the fuck are you talking about?

You can fool these niggas in here with those titangraphs but I lived through those times and I remember everything vividly

He special ed, you forgetting about dpg, lady of rage, Warren g, nate dogg, ras kass, ice cube, Westside connection, e40,xzibit etc...don't just count 1 company

That's like me saying the east ain't done shit and only mention bad boy

New york hip hop fans always come off like haters. Never wanting to give props for anything outside of NY.

Foh I give niggas they props when its rightly due. Aside from warren g and Nate dogg and cube ain't nobody You named is great or even considered great.

So again what fuck are you talking about?

Niggas call New York niggas haters. The irony of that statement. Smh

Doggy food isn't a classic? Hmm news to me

If jay such a real dude how come he aint ride with his day ones and still have roc-a-fella? He shitted on everybody the first chance he got.

#SnakeMove

mmmmm.... not quite.

Atlanta been runnin the game since Lil' Jon & The Eastside Boyz released "Kingz of Crunk" at the end of October of 2002. They just don't brag about it like New York has done in the past (and rightfully so). They already know if they really wanted to talk numbers, influence, etc then then it wouldn't take long or much to claim that stake

Atlanta/Georgia has arguably been the most dominant if not THE most dominant City/Region in Hip Hop of all time. With respect to both NYC and LA

What year did GRODT come out again?

Who were his biggest Singles Produced By again? What Label was it on ?

Right

The dark ages:

But I respect ppl who says Pac is top 5. I would not argue against it.
