If there's a chance that eventually you'll be making considerably more than you're making now then it makes sense, but if you've gotta do a whole lot just to get back to where you are now I wouldn't risk it.

Get a side hustle and see if you can turn that into something.

Maybe you can do something on the side with that.

From the outside looking in, sometimes a new gig can look better than it really is.

If you can, try and talk with some people who already work there and see if it's everything it's cracked up to be.

Everything that glitters ain't gold & you can never truly trust those who are spitting that "this company is so great" bs. About 8-10 years ago I had a job interview at this one company. Everyone was saying how great it was to work there....how good the benefits and chances for growth were. I was unemployed at the time & had just gotten a job offer from another company but it was making less. My gut told me to go w/ the job making less. Good thing I did because the other company went out of business a couple of months later. All that glitters ain't gold. Research the new company as much as possible before taking a pay cut that significant.

the stability of the company is not a factor-- they own an entire office building in Houston and are building ANOTHER one in Houston with plans to set up shop in Florida, Denver and Utah.

i think i'm willing to bear the financial sting if it means giving my career a much-needed push. i'll sleep on it and post my decision in the morning.

Congrats.. So how long do you surmise it will take you to at least get back to the pay scale you are currently at? And how much does the pay grow with each possible promotion? What are their promotion policies? Giving up 50% of your salary is major, unless you make like $100k then you'd be making $50k which most people could definitely survive on. Do as much non company biased research as you can before making the leap. Then again going to a well paying job that you dislike is not a good route either, if you don't have kids etc then I'd say if you are gonna be happier at the new gig then go for it.. If you were happy when you first started at your current gig you have to keep that in mind as well. In any case I wish you the best of luck.

GUI design and QA. Nah nigga, I jumped ship and got a 50% increase though. Funny huh?

Loo, go to the small company. Here's why from my experience:

- less office politics, more close knit group

- more flexible with deadlines

- opportunity to do even more tasks to pad your resume

- growth as you say

- a new challenge

- more time to post on the IC

Do whatever your heart tells you (no homo)

Nope - it's not something you should leave your current job for - too risky. Try to take it up as a second job.

Depends on your hustle game. Just remember that with growing companies, there are a lot of growing pains, and it might not be your cup of tea to take a huge pay cut AND have to work in an ambiguous environment with no real guarantee of promotion. Seems like they're lowballing you, as do a lot of "growing" companies.
