I think it's easier for them to care for non-biological kids for a couple reasons.

1) the pressure of parenthood isn't there. In their minds, they can walk away from these kids, no strings attached. They're being praised for doing a little something for those kids, cause he doesn't HAVE to do it.

2) The bitterness/anger/resentment that can come from the mother of their bio kids isn't there. Whether the feelings of the mother are warranted or not, he's not trying to get a constant reminder of his shortcomings as a father.
