Steve Bannon Says He Actually Will Campaign For Roy Moore In Alabama

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon will head to Alabama next week to campaign for the embattled Senate Republican candidate Roy Moore, he told CNN Tuesday.

“I look forward to standing with Judge Moore and all of the Alabama deplorables in the fight to elect him to the United States Senate and send shockwaves to the political and media elites,” Bannon told CNN.

Bannon plans to speak at a rally next week, which will kick off the final days of campaigning for Moore and his opponent Democrat Doug Jones before the election Dec. 12. Bannon’s comments to CNN came just hours after the Associated Press reported that Bannon would not stump for Moore before the election. The AP spoke with two Bannon associates at the time.

Bannon has not campaigned for Moore since before the Republican primary run-off election between Moore and incumbent Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL). The silence from Bannon was particularly telling given that multiple women have come forward since the beginning of November accusing Moore of sexual misconduct.

The allegations range from Moore pursuing relationships or making inappropriate sexual advances toward the women when they were teenagers and Moore was in his 30s. Moore has flatly denied all the allegations and chalked the whole scandal up to a political attack from the media, Democrats and the Republican establishment.

Bannon’s backing of Moore over Strange ignited the former White House strategist’s “war” on the Republican establishment. After Moore’s primary victory, Bannon vowed to back the more conservative challengers of every Republican senator up for reelection besides Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

Report: Trump Considers Boosting Roy Moore From Afar

While President Donald Trump has been careful to not explicitly endorse Alabama Senate Republican candidate Roy Moore, the White House is weighing its options to help the embattled candidate get elected, according to a new report.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that Trump is “not planning any trip to Alabama at this time,” but the White House is mulling whether to unleash a series of robo-calls, emails and text messages, three people familiar with the conversations told Politico.

Trump has all-but endorsed Moore publicly and has indicated he believes the former judge’s denials of the sexual misconduct allegations against him. Instead of outright embracing the candidate, Trump has tweeted attacks on Moore’s Democratic opponent, former U.S. attorney Doug Jones.

In private, Trump has told Republican senators he doubts Moore’s accusers — who claim Moore pursued relationships and made inappropriate sexual advances toward them when they were teens and Moore was in his 30s — and has questioned why the allegations are surfacing now when Moore has been an elected officials for decades, according to Politico.

White House officials and the head of the Republican National Committee discussed Trump’s options for stumping for Moore during a meeting on Monday, two people familiar with the matter said.

The President’s aides who spoke with Politico said that no decision has been made on what to do in Alabama, but they said that Sanders’ choice of words — that the White House isn’t planning a trip to Alabama “at this time” — was telling of what the White House is considering.

Regardless of what Trump decides, the President’s response to the allegations is lukewarm when compared to most of the leaders in his party — like Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) — who have said the allegations are credible and have called on Moore to step aside.

Here’s a weird detail spun out of the Roy Moore situation in Alabama. The GOP Senate nominee, who is running for office despite numerous allegations that he sought relationships with teenage girls as an adult, held a Wednesday event at Magnolia Springs Baptist Church in Mobile. There, Rev. Bill Atkinson led singing, AL.com reports. Alabamans may remember him for his 2012 conviction for obstruction and conspiracy. A federal jury found him guilty for interfering in an investigation into his son. The younger Atkinson, William IV, was charged in Honduras for molesting children at family-run orphanage.

It’s unclear how his son’s case wrapped up. The elder Atkinson did not immediately respond to a Law&Crime request for comment.

The Honduras investigation started because of another one of the reverend’s sons Jonathan Atkinson. He said some of the children at the orphanage reported being abused, so he set up a surveillance system in his brother’s office. Prosecutors said the reverend attempted to bring William IV back home to the States. In his attempted cover up, he asked two of his children to destroy a hard drive containing evidence against Jr.

The reverend serves as the music minister at the Magnolia Springs Baptist Church. He did not talk about politics at Wednesday’s event, according to AL.com.

“The sign out front says Baptists, and Baptists have to sing,” he said, telling the audience to join in.

As for Moore, allegations against him come at a pretty inconvenient time. Alabamans will vote December 12 in a special election to fill the U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions‘s former Senate seat. The claims put a dent in his campaign. Normally, this would be an easy victory: He’s the GOP nominee in a red state. But it doesn’t help that numerous people have gone on the record saying that decades ago he pursued romantic relationships with teens, one as young as 14. (The age of consent in Alabama was and is 16.) He has called the allegations a political smear job by media outlets like The Washington Post who broke the story and Democrats. He even took shots at “establishment” Republicans like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said he should quit the race.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said Thursday that while the allegations against Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) are “serious,” he would still insist on seating Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore if he wins his election, despite Moore also being accused of sexual misconduct.

“Roy Moore is now leading in the polls again in Alabama,” Fox News’ Neil Cavuto told Cruz in an interview. “He could win that race. Mitch McConnell has said he would not be welcome in the United States Senate. Do you think he should be thrown out if he is?”

“Of course not,” Cruz replied. “And I think we’ve got to respect the will of the voters. I think the reaction would be — I think it’d be completely unacceptable. If the voters of Alabama choose to elect him, for some Washington politicians to say, ‘We don’t care what the voters say,’ I think that would be a mistake. This is an issue that the voters have in front of them, and they’ll make a decision. I think we need to respect the will of the voters.”

Several top Republicans, including the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), have said Moore should be expelled from the Senate if he wins his election. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said in November that Moore “would immediately be in a process before the Senate Ethics Committee,” if he were sworn in.

Several women have accused Moore of pursuing romantic and sexual relationships with them when they were teenagers, and he was a grown man. Beverly Young Nelson has accused Moore of sexually assaulting her when she was 16. Leigh Corfman has said Moore initiated sexual contact with her when she was 14.

“What about Al Franken?” Cavuto went on. The senator has been accused by several women of unwanted groping, and by two women of kissing them without their consent. “He’s apologized, says he’s not leaving. What do you think of that?” Cavuto said.

“You know what? These allegations are serious and they keep coming up, every day more and more and more allegations,” Cruz said. “And I will say, there’s a rich irony watching all of the Democrats backpedalling and trying to justify, now, their colleague, who you’ve got — I think the count is five women who allege groping. That’s a serious, serious problem and I think it’s something that we’re going to see debated quite a bit more.”

President Donald Trump has all but thrown his support behind Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, the Republican now lesser-known for his insane unique policy views, better-known for preying on young teenagers.

Though most Republican lawmakers have shunned Moore in light of a bevy of molestation and sexual harassment allegations leveled against the former judge, Trump has declined to condemn him, instead choosing to bash his Democratic opponent, Doug Jones.

White House officials, facing a barrage of questions from reporters in the past few weeks over Trump’s tacit endorsement of Moore, have repeatedly boasted that at least Trump is not campaigning for Moore.

But now, as CNN’s Chris Cillizza points out, “Trump is doing the next best thing.”

“He’s going to Pensacola, Florida, to hold a campaign event next Friday — just four days before the December 12 special election,” Cillizza reports.

Pensacola — for you amateur geographers out there — is 25 miles from the Alabama border. It’s closer to the capital of Alabama (164 miles to Montgomery) than it is to the capital of Florida (196 miles to Tallahassee). And the Pensacola-Mobile media market reaches more than 15% of the state.

So while Trump won’t technically set foot in Alabama, he is doing everything but. Which, when you consider Trump and his political persona, is not surprising in the least.

Alabama Republicans call allegations against Roy Moore false

A new CBS News poll finds 71 percent of Alabama Republicans say the allegations against Roy Moore are false, and those who believe this also overwhelmingly believe Democrats and the media are behind those allegations.

The poll found 92 percent of Republicans who don't believe the allegations against Moore say the Democrats are behind the charges, and 88 percent say newspapers and the media are behind them.

Multiple women have come forward to accuse Moore of inappropriately pursuing or touching them when they were teenagers. The youngest woman to accuse Moore says she was 14 and he was 32 at the time.

The Senate contest looks to be highly dependent on turnout. Moore has a lead over Democrat Doug Jones, 49 percent to 43 percent, among the likely voters who are most apt to vote on Dec. 12. Among all registered voters, the contest is even. And nearly a quarter of voters still describe themselves as "maybe" or "probably" going to vote.

A majority of Alabama Republican voters (53 percent) say the allegations against Moore are a concern, but that other things matter more. One-third of Republicans say the allegations are not a concern to them.

The poll describes a picture of many Republican voters choosing based on other issues: Half of Moore's supporters say they are backing him mainly because they want a senator who will cast conservative votes in the Senate, rather than because they think Moore is the best person for the job.

The poll also found 49 percent of Moore voters say their Senate vote is in support of President Trump, and 23 percent of Moore voters say the president's comments about the race, specifically, have made them more likely to back Moore.

Among all registered voters, the president has a 57 percent approval rating in the state. Among Moore's voters, it is an astounding 96 percent approval.

Doug Jones does not appear to be drawing many crossover Republicans, which he would almost surely need in order to gain ground. Only 9 percent of Republicans say they're voting for him.

More than eight in Republicans are planning to vote for Moore, and a higher number of Moore's backers call themselves definite voters than do Jones' backers.

Looking for signs of what could happen in the final week, the race could still change, as 12 percent of Republicans say they could change their minds. Moore, in turn, could potentially benefit from voters who say they're unsure about their vote choice or backing "someone else" at the moment, as this group looks like they're usually Republican: two-thirds voted for Donald Trump in 2016.

Alabama remains a deeply conservative state: most registered voters believe that abortion should be illegal (58 percent) and that same-sex marriage should not be legal (56 percent). Moore draws nearly nine in 10 voters who believe abortion should be illegal. Only 19 percent of registered voters call themselves liberal.
