You do realize that when X Clan and Brand Nubian was out there were also other rappers and rap styles right? They weren't the only rappers around...and it sold plenty or is Public Enemy not one of the most highly regarded groups of ANY genre of all time? Wasn't there just a thread the other day about how artists like Dead Prez got shows filled with white kids? As for the grammy's...the same grammy's that hip hop fans have said for years don't accurately judge the culture? Is Warren G a better rapper than Nas? No...would I rather bump "This DJ' over "Life's A Bitch"" if I'm just riding around nice day and want to relax? Hell yes...just because you like one don't mean you dislike the other. This is the problem many have with NY rap fans in general. Act like because you like 1 style you can't like another. Just because I can enjoy hearing 8Ball and MJG talk their shit don't mean I also can't enjoy throwing on Dead Presidents II...you don't have to pick. You can enjoy it all and you'd be a fool to restrict your musical taste

You lost me @ the bolded. Life's a B!tch is a top 10 Hip Hop song. I'd bump that before I'd bump anything by Warren G.

My nigga if it's a sunny day out and you about to get in your car and go for a ride and have a choice between "Life's A Bitch" and "This DJ" and you pick "Life's A Bitch" either you need therapy or just cut to the chase and go kill yourself because your life sucks. Even Nas wouldn't pick his own song for that

I'm going to try to explain this to you in simple terms; Warren G can't rap. If a Warren G song comes on I'm skipping past it or changing the channel (or tossing the CD out the window).

I don't know where you're from but if you'd pick ANY song by Warren G over Life's A Bitch then your taste in Hip Hop is questionable.

Life's a Bitch is the perfect song and AZ and Nas had the perfect flow.

Nigga you must ride around town with no women in your whip bruh. Can Nas rap better than Warren G, sure....but Joel Ortiz rhyme better than Diddy too but guess who more successful and why...because ain't no bitches finna dance to amazing multi syllables and fantastic wordplay. Fuck outta here!

Yo why is thread so long. Summary?

5 Grand wants to know why certain east coast albums didn't sell as well as west coast albums

Folks explain to him that it was preference, style, they just like the artist more, etc. 5 Grand wouldn't or couldn't accept those explanations.

And it goes on for 20 pages.

I don't understand how they don't see this point. There's a time & place for certain artists music. Music is powerful & it sets moods . Different music serve different moods. Illmatic is coined a classic but like I stated earlier; I'm not going to bumping it when I am in nightlife mood

Whoa what he do that caused one last time???

If you care to read all this shit:

Sounds and phases are the answer to your question. New York rap was dominant for a long time and they were real exclusive to anyone not from New York or close in proximity to it. So basically when the West and South proved they had their own listeners and own self-made companies (Master P at the time and Hot Boys and Dre's Aftermath) they didn't have to deal with record companies and banked all the cash flow. The South and the West had been on the sidelines for a long time and had a lot to say and were also INCLUSIVE to bring in people from Texas, Cali, Chicago, Miami and so when those radio waves hit the country it drowned out the New York sound. Tupac deserves a ton of credit for this and NWA. They really kinda single handedly knocked NY out.

Also, the south and West emphasized rhythm and heavy bass lines with easy to follow lyrics where New York rappers were abrasive and lyrically heavy and challenging to the basic listener.

Also, New York did set the stage for the West and South to sell platinum records. Your thread question is like asking why Wilt Chamberlain didn't make as much money as Ron Artest. New York created it, they put the work in it, they commercialized it and sold it but they were owned by record labels and didn't keep a lot of their money and had little control financially. So when Big Daddy Kane's day was over he ain't have 3 million sitting in the bank. He wasn't going to London selling out shows. Wu-Tang's problem was 9 motherfuckers was too much dividing of the cash flow and too much put on one genius ass producer in the RZA to continue to handle business and producing to keep them on top.

Well when the West and South came in, rap was international and they owned their record labels and basically took advantage or rightfully claimed an audience that was built by New York rappers for the West and South. I'm all ATL, but I do remember how it went. There was a time nobody but NY got radio play if you were rapping

Hip Hop would be better if it stayed within the 5 boroughs. Word to I Used to Love Her.

How you gonna say that while quoting a Chicago MC? That makes no sense

Listen to the song, that Chicago MC even agrees that Hip Hop was better when it was in New York.

If Hip-Hop was so much better when it was in NY then how come some NY dudes were so quick to abandon their own style and hop on everyone else's style to try and stay popular?

Its called selling out. You give somebody a big, fat wad of cash and tell him to wear a top hat and a blazer with coattails and he'll wear it.

I remember the X Clan/Brand Nubian era. Thats when MCs used to drop knowledge and talk about African history but that shit didn't sell so they got pushed to the back and gangsta rap got pushed to the forefront because white kids liked it.

Back to the original topic. Illmatic came out in April 94, got 5 mics but didn't go gold. Warren G's Regulate...G Funk era came out in June 1994. Warren G sold 3X plat and got nominated for two grammys. "This D.J." was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance, while "Regulate" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.

So my question is; How is Warren G better than Nas? Or how was Regulate...G Funk Era better than Illmatic? Can somebody from the West please explain what you like about Warren G so much or what you didn't like about Illmatic?

Nas is in incredible rapper but Warren G's subject matter and choice of beats resonated more with our way of life. You can go to any family get together out here and hear that type of sound. That type of flow in the Chevy impala's driving to kick it at the beach or local hang out spots. Nas illmatic I guess fit y'all way of life. That project hallways and stair cases type shit that you can't expect us to gravitate to over shit that we had reppin our vibe. Come on now...why would we bump illmatic when Ice Cube had music out we could get?
