5th Letter- How did you get into hip hop?

DillaDeaf- It was a gradual progression...and in many ways was going to end up into it one way or the other. Like I said before, my mom's family and extended family was very big on jazz (some play in jazz bands in Detroit), Motown, gospel, and RnB. I was also lucky in the sense some of my 2nd cousins were only a few years older than me but they were old enough to be aware during the first wave (we talking Sugar Hill to Run DMC in mid 80s), But my proper introduction into hip hop was no other than Luke Skyywalker...you might know him now as Luther Campbell, Uncle Luke or simply Luke.

See Luke and 2 Live Crew bass was very big in Detroit (and always has) during the mid 80s. My cousins and I literally sold bootlegs (the cassette tapes lol). Being a deaf guy and feeling bass....shit was perfect. But my 2nd cousins didn't let me and my other cousins off the hook. They played RUN DMC, Slick Rick, Dana Dane, LL, and Beastie Boys. While I def didn't know the lyrics, the beats stayed with me. I'm one of those deaf folks that can literally feel a beat and the vibe. Back then unless the lyrics were typed inside a cassette tape booklet or later on a CD booklet, it was impossible to understand lyrics. But literally growing up at the beginning of the internet age pretty much help my immersion as forums popped up and lyrics sites such as OHHLA.com . I pretty much self taught myself alot about hip hop history and the culture.

5th Letter- Being deaf expound how do you consume music?

DillaDeaf- I literally "feel" the beat. Play a beat long enough I can memorized it sort of in my head, especially if I'm writing rhymes to it for fun. It also helps if I'm memorizing the beat while actually reading the lyrics to an ideaf of the timing of the lyrics. For this reason I usually love west coast beats (they are more laid back and easy to get the timing down). Another apparent knack I have is being able understanding the vibe of a song, which helps when I make tracklist for music to play at small parties at friends house and such. No, I'm not a DJ (but there's actual legit deaf DJ's out there), but I have an understanding how to control the flow of a crowd through the way a tracklist is set up using those vibes skills. My dad is a firm believer in losing one sense, you gain another sense. He always said me having lose my hearing, i gain another "sixth sense" ..so I guess that ability to "feel" and get a "vibe" and being extra perception (through music or whatever) is part of it.

5th Letter- Who are your favorite and least favorite rappers?

DillaDeaf- My favorite rappers are Rakim, Cube, Nas, Oukast, Common, KDot, Chuck D, Slick Rick, Biggie, Pac, Bun B, David Banner, Big KRIT. I gravitate toward storytellers when I'm reading the lyrics, I like to visualize stuff, it shows in the rhymes I write too. My least favorite? Pick any of these new so called "mumble" cats -- they can't say a story for shit. As for favorite producers --- Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, Organized Noise, Jermaine Dupri, The Hitmen, Warren G and of course Mannie Fresh. Special shoutout to DJ Mr. Mixx for forever doing the "Breakdown" beat...that beat been stuck in my mind to this day !

5th Letter- What are your favorite albums?

DillaDeaf- I'm doing my favorite albums by beats: The Chronic, Chronic 2001, G Funk Era (Warren G), SouthernPlayastiCadillacMuzik, ATLiens, Stankonia, In A Major Way (E40), Space Age 4 Eva (Ball and G), Doggystyle, Rhythm and the Gangsta (Snoop), Country Grammar, Trap Muzik, Ready to Die, All Eyez on Me, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper (DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince), E. 1999, Ghetto D (Master P), Champion Sound (Dilla), Back on the Block (Quincy Jones) -- (one of the first songs I ever memorized was from this album..the title song)

Gangsta's Paradise (Coolio), and of course the gold standard of soundtracks beatwise --- Space Jam

5th Letter- Your thoughts on hip hop today?

DillaDeaf- To be honest, haven't kept up with it much because the commercialization bastardized of it by to many out to make a quick buck. But guys like Kendrick, KRIT, Anderson.Paak among others have help me renew my love of hiphop. I would like to see the new generation go digging in the crates a little deeper and put new spin on old classics... for example, I know the beat to "My Girls" by the Tempts front to back (I can signed the entire song in ASL, it's one of my songs period) -- I want to see somebody take that breakdown beat between the 2nd and 3rd verse and make it into one song. Nobody done it yet. But I'm open to new things too, but everybody need to lay off alot of those 808 beats, they all feel the same. the beats in the 90s were distinctive enough to separate by feel.

5th Letter- How did you discover the IC?

DillaDeaf- I used to lurked on the GameFaqs Hip Hop subforum ..that how I found the link to the IC. I lurked about a year or two before signing up and finally got active on the board a couple of years ago.

5th Letter- What made you decide to become active?

DillaDeaf- The Cheap Seats section basically, I love sports 24/7. I can argue football and basketball all day with my real life homies and fam, so basically the CS was an extension of it. I also started to branch out to other subforums, I do have a ebbok thread I created in one of the subforums.

5th Letter- What are your early memories of the IC?

DillaDeaf- I remember some Cyclops dude on the Asylum subforum (comic book subforum), JennaBush in the IllPix (and her nudes), some dude in the Cheap Seats that was like the biggest Oklahoma Sooner homer on the planet. . I remember BoyRoBest getting dissed about his hairline.

5th Letter- What are some of the craziest things you've seen since you've been on the IC?

DillaDeaf- The exposure thread on SleepInJapaan. Without question, the craziest and one of the wildest threads ever. But the recent exposure thread on @S2J is a damn near close second. For a personal favorite of an annual craziest shit I've seen , the annual NFL thread in Cheap Seats can get super crazy at times, even the college football thread. @Sion's Disrespectful Neeghas Thread is whole other level of crazy tho lmao.

5th Letter- At times you have self depreciating humor about your hearing where does that come from?

DillaDeaf- I come from a family (my moms and stepdad's both) that is heavy on humor, also my favorite comedians are; Bernie Mac, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock...so you can see their style reflect on me as well.

5th Letter- Who are some of your favorite and least favorite posters?

DillaDeaf- Favorites: Kai, Sion, Stew (when he's not bitching about his tricycle bike), Caddo Man, Mastery (as long he doesn't flirt with Jazzybella -- I'm shooting that fool on sight), JazzyBella, Beezus,

Least Favorite: "Queen" Moebra (King Moebra)

Least Favorite in Cheap Seats: John_B -fuck yo Pats cheatin ass team, Vageneral - fuck yo brokeback vagina ass Colts team, Chicity - fuck yo Chi teams, especially the Bears and may you forever stand in the rain, nigga. Everybody who isn't a Detroit Lions fan - fuck you, fuck you and fuck yo couch and fuck your ears

5th Letter- What are some things you'd like to change about the IC?

DillaDeaf- I would add subforums for regional hiphop to make it easier to find thread on specific rappers or specific hip hop news for that region in The Reason forum. For Cheap Seats, we should had a e-bookie system in place now for fun to wager on games (no real money involved tho), Even though I run the official e-book thread, I wish there was a section where we simply discuss books, there's a lot of black history books and other books I know many on the IC would love to discuss but there's not real subforum section for it -- the closest thing to it would "The Social Lounge" subforum.

5th Letter- Predictions for the Lions this season?

DillaDeaf- 11-5 in the regular season, and we're winning this year Super Bowl in this bitch.

5th Letter- Word association 2 words or less.

5th Letter- Dude who did the sign language freestyle rap

DillaDeaf- ignorant

5th Letter- J Dilla

DillaDeaf- Donuts

5th Letter- JazzyBella

DillaDeaf- deaf babies

5th Letter- Matt Stafford

DillaDeaf- Super Bowl

5th Letter- Any last words before we wrap up?

DillaDeaf- Yup --- leave you with one of my favorite verses I wrote back in the day:

Now I'm back with another rhymin arrangment

For your enjoyment, it's black entertainment

Everything they say, trying to keep me away

They do it everyday - but here I stay

Turn my fitted D to the left side

Ain't no Crip - but I rep the East Side

Call me a Capricorn - with a classic form

Gamechanger like Armstrong on the horn

My style raw - like a fist to the jaw

Lay down the law like Lou Rawls

Ya'll know that Mama ain't raised no fool

Stick around chumps - show u ol school

Deaf rapper rhymin harder than Def Jam

Dilla wants the throne - fakers get on the lam

Stack my cheddar - write hip hop a letter

Gotta let them know - Can't nobody do it better
