How Come Mid 90s NY Rap Didn't Sell?

Ok, it's time for this thread to end. 5 grand idk wtf your agenda is with this thread but you continue to still type stupid shit to keep it going a week later... It's over b, please stop

So basically this thread was a big waste of time.

We're going on 20 pages and still nobody has addressed the question that I've asked over and over and over again and again. You guys keep diverting attention from what I'm asking, changing the subject, posting memes and .gifs and making ad hominem attacks when the question is very simple; how the hell is Regulate...G Funk Era 3X plat and Illmatic is only 1X plat?

How is that possible?

it was light on lyricism, more melodic/harmonizing, appealed to the masses including hip hop heads AND casual listeners. To be into illmatic u had to be more than a casual fan so the scope of listeners was smaller. And the Regulate single blew that album up in a time where everyone was buying albums off hit singles.

And gangsta rap is more 'fun' to be a fan of than pure emceeing its pretty simple imo

Well at least you answered the question.

But I would still think that over the past 20 years Illmatic would have sold more.

Mods can lock this.

Lol what he typed was typed multiple times in this thread

How come none of these mumbling ass retards from the south can sell AND they flop so bad they now count streams as sales

Could you imagine if they counted radio spins in the 90s as album sales or single sales?

the more commercial appeal something has the better it sells its that simple. it was written was more commercial than illmatic and sold much better in less time. the hardcore illmatic fans criticized it was written cuz they felt it was too commercial, yet it sold more than illmatic. u get it?

Because it was more popular....Its is plausible that people couldve owned both albums and thought Illmatic was better...Now I dont want to hear anything from Warren G other than Regulate and those 5 bars on It Aint No Fun, but questioning why he sold so much is just hate.....The reason Regulate outsold Illmatic is the same reason why Nas got with Lauryn Hill and made If I Ruled the world....

OK here's an analogy

Over the years people have told me that Never Mind The Bullocks Its The Sex Pistols is the ultimate punk rock album. I've never been into punk or heavy metal so I didn't really care. People told me I should listen to that album when I was in high school. Then as I got older in my twenties and thirties people kept telling me to cop that Sex Pistols album.

Eventually I broke down and copped it. I ordered the CD from amazon. Now I'm not a punk rock fan but I gave the album a listen simply because people kept telling me to check it out. Truth be told I hated it. I can't stand that style of music but I made myself sit through it a few times just to see what all the fuss was about.

I'd imagine that people have heard similar things about Illmatic. I'm sure that over the years casual rap fans have been told that Illmatic is a GOAT album. I just think its strange that it hasn't sold more to casual rap fans who are curious to hear what is considered the greatest rap album ever recorded.

Does that make any sense?

Well at the end of the day the albums I named;

The Sun Rises In The East

Hard To Earn

Illadelph Halflife

Doe or Die

Reasonable Doubt

36 Chambers

Only Built For Cuban Linx

Midnight Marauders

Those albums are all 5 mic classics in my book. I'd put every one of those albums right up there with Doggystyle, Regulate... The G Funk Era, It Takes A Thief, The Chronic or All Eyes On Me. Apparently people in the other 49 states disagree with me.

Wtf are you really arguing right now?

I'm from nyc. And I know NYC music don't appeal to everyone.

It's that simple.

I'm not arguing anything. I'm just saying that I think those East Coast albums that didn't do well commercially are as good as the West Coast albums that did well commercially. Its not an argument, its just an opinion. Take it or leave it but don't respond with any hostility or Ad Hominem attacks.

You got the right to your opinion but to start a whole thread about "how come they didn't sell and these niggas out west did" type mentality makes you look petty and jealous or something.

It's one thing to have a preference, it's another thing to come off looking like you whining on some 'ol sour grapes funk master flex' ass shit

Read thru the thread n 99% of it is ppl being biased to the side theyre on, not surprising.

West coast was harder, faster, catchier.

East coast was more conscious, slower, grittier.

U never had to decipher a west coast rappers lyrics so it was more simple. But no one tryna hear Nas in a club.

It really that difficult?

Real fuckin talk tho

Im not understanding why 20 years later he can't just charge that shit to the game.

Illmatic is talked about on here and some other places on the internet. Nas said a lot of white people bring it up to him. Sites like this always had a lot of white people trying to influence but that has no pull in the streets and such. There is and always has been a big difference between what people "like" on here and what people are actually listening to out there in the street, cars, clubs, etc. In my realm nobody really talked about it or talks about that cd. Its at most considered a good cd. No hate but its just what people say on the internet and what really goes on out there are different. Warren G had Regulate and some more big hits and it was a big cd at the time. I havent heard it in over a decade but neither have I heard Illmatic in over a decade. It doesnt come up in my regular life. Sometimes I hear songs from these cds and its cool. It aint hard to tell is that sht as is Regulate. Not hatin on either Im sure in NY and around there they look at Illmatic differently than down here in the streets its probably looked at differently but have to look at the big picture at the same time. The world is bigger than just the Northeast. Again not hatin because I reserve the right to listen to Illmatic or Warren G or whoever I want whenever I want. Warren G's cd was bigger because it had bigger singles (like Regulate) which people felt in more areas. That doesnt mean people didnt like Nas's singles cause It aint hard to tell was the sht from the start to me here in GA. Just Warrens thing was bigger at the time.
