He has a point to a degree if he was speaking on the current era of rap music but he’s also subliminally coming off as racist/prejudice at the same time. He's seems bitter.

Get your ass outta here, he said "Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. "Run-DMC in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? You’re killing me"

I don't think he knows what he's talking about.

A song, by definition, doesn't necessarily have to be sung. Poetry has oftentimes been made "songs" by an accompanying musical composition.

In addition, English poetry creates rhythm using things like rhyme, meter and stressed/unstressed syllables.

It's not "just talking". That's prose.

Everyone may not agree, but to me, hip hop is poetry. Specifically, poetry set to music.

In other words, songs.

Yeah the cadence that a rapper uses is more than just "talking over a beat". You'd have to listen to a lot of rap to know the difference but some rapper's flows are truly a work of art.

Lol @ him saying he wants music to come back to lyrics and melody

Like he's been under a rock last few years, rap has been mostly melody with a resurgence of lyricism lately. And I love melodic songs

Btw rush>>>>>kiss too

I dont know where he's been but mainstream rap has become more or less melody over lyrics... Not to mention Kiss was hella light, there's only one song I fuck with (Shock Me) and he wasnt even the lead vocal on it. They were completely image over substance, like someone else said, they embodied and ushered in the bullshit that grunge and punk killed in the preceding decades.

Funny cuz he's known to be an average at best musical talent..kiss is mad overrated and his main thing was wearing make up and sticking his tongue out so he fuck off with that grumpy old man, back in my day hater talk

Funny I don't hear him bitching bout heavy metal.

All they do is scream in the mic and make frog like noises!

Truth. A lot of popular metal has more less tonal value than modern rap and pop. Unless they are doing the melodic solos or melodic chorus thing. Basically Gene is a not much of a musician and more of a marketing guy really. From that stand-point you'd think he would understand rap. I think he's just A) trolling or B) out-of-touch or C) racist.

I always thought Kiss were fucking terrible and an example of everything that was wrong with 70s Rock music. I'm glad Gene Simmons hates hip hop, his opinion on music is officially void.

Old people, regardless of color or culture, have the least value when it comes to opinions on music because they're forever stuck in their era. My grandma doesn't blast Jay or Beyonce while cooking, it's some old stuff you hear the new guys sample. They're not looking to innovate their music or sound but would love for it to be the same forever and anyone that challenges that way of thinking is considered wack.

Someone needs to ask him his opinion of Eminem and point out the way Eminem passionately sings his hooks and find out whether or not that may be enough to redeem HipHop in his eyes...

So is he claiming that what they do is singing? Cuz it just sounds like yelling to me. Lowkey I think Meek got his style from rock and roll.

For real?

Talib Kweli response:

An irate rapper ripped Gene Simmons for recently saying he looked forward to “the death of rap” — by posing the same scenario about the polarizing KISS bassist. “Hip-hop has saved countless lives. How dare he wish it dead,” Talib Kweli fumed on Twitter Saturday afternoon. “So would it be fair to wish him dead, or nah?” The Brooklyn-born artist and activist tangled with dozens of KISS fans on Friday and Saturday, arguing that there’s plenty of quality rap music to go around — compared to the heavy metal band’s superficial “marketing.”

“I had no problem w KISS til Simmons b---h a-- opened his mouth about rap,” he wrote. “Let’s go lyric for lyric tho. Me vs KISS. “Rock has also saved countless lives. No one is dissing rock. Kiss ain’t rock. It’s marketing. Try to keep up.” Kweli, spouting off a list of artists that included supergroup Run the Jewels and New York-born rappers Joey Badass, Dave East and Skyzoo, challenged Twitter users to stop being “lazy” and go find the good stuff themselves.

@SimonAli @genesimmons hiphop has saved countless lives. How dare he wish it dead. So would it be fair to wish him dead, or nah?

“What makes you so entitled that you think good music supposed to be served to you on a silver platter?” he said. “Of course you have to search for it. Like all good art since the beginning of time. Corporations have ALWAYS pushed fluff.”

Simmons himself brushed off backlash over his remarks. “Apparently pointing out that everything is cyclical — even music — is ‘controversial,’” he tweeted Friday. “People are very easily offended.”

I hope somebody beats his ass again
