Updated: Sako and Daigo show off the joys of Ultra Street Fighter 4's Edition Select, pits SSF4 Cammy against AE Yun
Update: A brief translation of what Sako and Daigo talked about during the Training mode segment has been added.
To promote the upcoming console release of Ultra Street Fighter 4 in Japan (because, ya know, it's technically only out in arcades over there), Capcom has published today the first episode of a special video series that goes over the new features in Ultra, while featuring exhibition matches from some of the country's most celebrated pro fighting gamers.
And kicking off the first episode in this series is none other than Hori-sponsored player Sako, and MCZ|Daigo -- legends in the Japanese fighting games community as far back as Street Fighter 2 and Darkstalkers.
In this episode, Hori|Sako and MCZ|Daigo get to try out one of Ultra's most coveted new features: Edition Select.
The two pro gamers revisit the good old days of Vanilla Cammy, SSF4 Guile, Vanilla Akuma and Sagat (70% of your opponent's life bar gone with just one simple combo) by taking them out for a spin in the lab, before shifting into serious mode and going at each other's throats, with SSF4 Cammy and AE Yun in a real match.
Hit the jump to watch the full video. The training mode part starts at 06:28, while SSF4 Cammy vs. AE Yun begins from 11:33.
'Edition Select' Training Mode talk
At the beginning of the session, Sako turned to SF4 Cammy right away, while Daigo had to think for a little bit.
Daigo: "Although I was using Ryu during that period... let's go with Super Guile."
You could tell that Sako's absolutely been looking forward to playing with the older version of Cammy; as soon as the announcer yells "Fight!", Cammy backdashes away from Guile and starts performing several reps of instant-air Cannon Strike dive kicks.
"Erm, please bestow the gift of life to me," Daigo had to plead, before Sako realised that this was Training mode they were in, and that he had to give control of the training dummy to Player 2.
As Sako's Cammy swiftly hops over Guile's Sonic Booms with well-timed Cannon Strikes, Nuki the show's emcee remarks that you'd need EX meter to be able to do that in the current version.
Sako practices doing some of Cammy's combos on Guile, but ultimately drops the combos mid-way. "I've forgotten what the combo routes are," he said.
"That's only natural; the game came out in 2008." Capcom's Tomoaki Ayano comments.
Next, Ayano suggests checking out the damage for Guile's Ultra 2. Daigo also recalls the Flash Kick doing a ton of damage.
Even Sako was a little surprised: "He used to do this much damage?"
The group also laughs at the obscene amount of advantage frames Guile's Sonic Boom possesses, which made it seemingly impossible for Cammy to close in.
Afterwards, Sako and Daigo tried out SF4 Akuma and SF4 Sagat.
Sako wanted to try his hand at Akuma's HK loop. And although Daigo wanted to play some AE Yun, as Akuma's HK loop would not work on Yun, he decided to go with SF4 Sagat instead -- since he was the other top-tier choice in SF4 vanilla.
The group reeled from the amount of damage Sagat did with that one combo on Akuma ("About 70% damage!") but also remarked that it's amazing that Akuma could do half-life combos without any meter, using the HK loop.
"(In spite of the 70% damage combo) I think Akuma has the advantage in this match-up," Daigo says.
"The Demon Flip Grab is super strong here," he explains before requesting for Sako to demonstrate.
