Updated: Sako and Daigo show off the joys of Ultra Street Fighter 4's Edition Select, pits SSF4 Cammy against AE Yun

Update: A brief translation of what Sako and Daigo talked about during the Training mode segment has been added.

To promote the upcoming console release of Ultra Street Fighter 4 in Japan (because, ya know, it's technically only out in arcades over there), Capcom has published today the first episode of a special video series that goes over the new features in Ultra, while featuring exhibition matches from some of the country's most celebrated pro fighting gamers.

And kicking off the first episode in this series is none other than Hori-sponsored player Sako, and MCZ|Daigo -- legends in the Japanese fighting games community as far back as Street Fighter 2 and Darkstalkers.

In this episode, Hori|Sako and MCZ|Daigo get to try out one of Ultra's most coveted new features: Edition Select.

The two pro gamers revisit the good old days of Vanilla Cammy, SSF4 Guile, Vanilla Akuma and Sagat (70% of your opponent's life bar gone with just one simple combo) by taking them out for a spin in the lab, before shifting into serious mode and going at each other's throats, with SSF4 Cammy and AE Yun in a real match.

Hit the jump to watch the full video. The training mode part starts at 06:28, while SSF4 Cammy vs. AE Yun begins from 11:33.

'Edition Select' Training Mode talk

At the beginning of the session, Sako turned to SF4 Cammy right away, while Daigo had to think for a little bit.

Daigo: "Although I was using Ryu during that period... let's go with Super Guile."

You could tell that Sako's absolutely been looking forward to playing with the older version of Cammy; as soon as the announcer yells "Fight!", Cammy backdashes away from Guile and starts performing several reps of instant-air Cannon Strike dive kicks.

"Erm, please bestow the gift of life to me," Daigo had to plead, before Sako realised that this was Training mode they were in, and that he had to give control of the training dummy to Player 2.

As Sako's Cammy swiftly hops over Guile's Sonic Booms with well-timed Cannon Strikes, Nuki the show's emcee remarks that you'd need EX meter to be able to do that in the current version.

Sako practices doing some of Cammy's combos on Guile, but ultimately drops the combos mid-way. "I've forgotten what the combo routes are," he said.

"That's only natural; the game came out in 2008." Capcom's Tomoaki Ayano comments.

Next, Ayano suggests checking out the damage for Guile's Ultra 2. Daigo also recalls the Flash Kick doing a ton of damage.

Even Sako was a little surprised: "He used to do this much damage?"

The group also laughs at the obscene amount of advantage frames Guile's Sonic Boom possesses, which made it seemingly impossible for Cammy to close in.

Afterwards, Sako and Daigo tried out SF4 Akuma and SF4 Sagat.

Sako wanted to try his hand at Akuma's HK loop. And although Daigo wanted to play some AE Yun, as Akuma's HK loop would not work on Yun, he decided to go with SF4 Sagat instead -- since he was the other top-tier choice in SF4 vanilla.

The group reeled from the amount of damage Sagat did with that one combo on Akuma ("About 70% damage!") but also remarked that it's amazing that Akuma could do half-life combos without any meter, using the HK loop.

"(In spite of the 70% damage combo) I think Akuma has the advantage in this match-up," Daigo says.

"The Demon Flip Grab is super strong here," he explains before requesting for Sako to demonstrate.

In the latest episode of Topanga TV (via Tokidoblog and Beast Note), hosts MCZ|Tokido, MCZ|Mago and EG|Momochi takes a look at recorded match footage from the recent Topanga Banzuke tournament that was held on June 1.

The tournament matches shown on the episode feature a number of notable Japanese players, such as EG|Momochi, RZR|Itabashi Zangief, Nemo, EG|Chocoblanka, Nishikin, Mahou Shoujo Zangitan, and -- last but not least -- MCZ|Daigo.

This is, we believe, the first time footage of MCZ|Daigo playing Ultra Street Fighter 4's Evil Ryu in a competitive setting has surfaced.

To top it off, Daigo's opponent, a Gouken player who goes by Juta, is no slouch -- we even see him out-zone Daigo's Evil Ryu with Gouken's fireballs. This one's really down to the wire.

Hit the jump to watch the matches, beginning at the 1:28:40. If you'd like to just skip to the MCZ|Daigo, that begins at the 01:53:00 mark.

Do note, however, that all of this footage is USF4 arcade v1.00; the version played here did not include the final changes made to the console release.

Daigo Umehara's yearly income is at least $196k - Sources

An article about the growth of e-sports from Sankei Biz has mentioned Daigo Umehara in one paragraph. (Sankei Newspaper has the sixth highest circulation for a newspaper in Japan.)

There're also world-class Japanese players. The leader is Daigo Umehara (age 33). According to several people who are in the business "With the income from the sponsors, he should make at least over 20 million yen ($195.9k) a year."

So the worst player is dhalsim

It's hard to say going by that chart. Dhalsim appears to be on a lower tier than someone like Hugo, but Hugo seems to have way more exploitable faults. I would think that would mean that Hugo would be beatable in more situations that Dhalsim.

Trivia: Why "Chocolate-Chip Cookie" and "Angry Dog"? The titles are apparently a reference to the assistant and main hosts of the Capcom TV programme, model and actress Ikeda Chocolat, and comedian Yoshiyuki Hirai from the duo America Zarigani. On a recent stream, Capcom's Tomoaki Ayano and Koichi Sugiyama joined the hosts as Team Chocolate-Chip Cookie and Team Angry Dog to show off the game's new Team Battle mode

Daigo lists his top 10 fighters in Ultra Street Fighter 4, feels Sagat is weak now

30_daigotop10.jpg

MCZ|Daigo Umehara expressed who he thought the strongest characters are in Ultra Street Fighter 4, in the latest issue of Arcadia Magazine.

EventHubs' Nicholas "MajinTenshinhan" Taylor provided this translation, with help from Zhi, where Umehara breaks down the top 10 fighters, along with a few other opinions.

Like many others, Daigo feels that Yun is the best fighter in the game, saying "His #1 status is off putting, but for different reasons than in his SSF4 Arcade Edition iteration."

Daigo's Ultra Street Fighter 4 strongest 10, not including Yun

- Cammy

- Fei Long

- Dudley

- Evil Ryu

- Makoto

- Ibuki

- C. Viper

- Juri

- Adon

- Rufus (maybe?)

No word was given if this list was in order, or not.

Daigo said he was unsure about Rufus specifically.

Here are a few more notes from the write up.

- Akuma and Rose are really good too.

- Adon and Rose got better defense.

- Ken is right in the middle.

- Sagat is weak.

- Evil Ryu can fight top tier such as Cammy and Fei Long, but he has tough match ups against some mid tier characters, contrary to Ryu.

Daigo: 'I switched from Ryu to Evil Ryu because of Yun'; Ken, Akuma, Sagat are mid-tier but viable

02_daigo_eryu.jpg

Earlier this week, we posted a summarised excerpt from MCZ|Daigo's column in the latest issue of Arcadia magazine in Japan.

The exerpt itself was centered around Daigo's thoughts on the character tiers in Ultra Street Fighter 4. But as it turns out, the column itself was quite a bit longer, and contained a few more nuggets of info from The Beast himself.

For instance, MCZ|Daigo said that Yun was actually the main reason why he switched from Ryu to Evil Ryu. He also expressed his thoughts on where Ryu, Ken, Akuma and Sagat stand in the tiers.

Arcadia magazine's Morikawa: Everyone's probably been wondering about this, but can you please share with us your thoughts on character tiers in Ultra Street Fighter 4? Which characters are strong?

MCZ|Daigo: The strongest would definitely be Yun.

Arcadia: How strong would you say he is, compared to in AE?

MCZ|Daigo: In AE, ultimately there were three characters in the highest tier: Yun, Yang and Fei Long. And even in vanilla SF4, although you could say that Sagat was definitely the strongest character in the game, Akuma and Rufus were also up there.

Compared to those versions, this time Yun is so strong that you could say he is practically in his own tier. Although Yun does have a hard time against all of the new characters, across the board.

Arcadia: So you mean, overall, there are a lot of characters who have a hard time winning against Yun?

MCZ|Daigo: Yes, I believe so. In fact, it's the reason why I switched to Evil Ryu as my main. When fighting against Yun as Ryu, I thought "yikes, this is a pretty tough match-up".

And when I began to think about what I needed to overcome this match-up, well, to begin with I'd definitely need more attack power. Because I need to be able to punish command grabs with a painful counter-attack.

For those reasons, I decided to go with Evil Ryu. There were other concerns I had, of course, but it just so happened that picking Evil Ryu worked out with all of those concerns, and on top of that, E.Ryu could take on the top class character Yun.

Arcadia: So you're saying, Evil Ryu is a counter for Yun?

MCZ|Daigo: No, that's not what I mean. Although Evil Ryu can go toe-to-toe against Yun, in terms of character tiers, Evil Ryu himself is quite a bit lower. Although I'd say Evil Ryu is within the upper echelons of the tier, he's definitely not anywhere near Yun's tier.

Daigo goes on to list the top 10 characters, after Yun, which you can see in our previous story here.

To clarify further, this is what Daigo's tier list for the top 11 characters looks like:

- Yun

- Cammy, Fei Long

- Dudley, Evil Ryu, Makoto, Ibuki, C. Viper, Juri, Adon, Rufus

Daigo also clarifies that this list is based purely on characters who stood out, based on what he's seen. He also says that Ryu and Ken are right in the middle of the tiers.

Arcadia: What about Sagat? Looks like he has unfortunately not made the upper tiers this time.

MCZ|Daigo: Yep, he doesn't make it there. Well, if you look at it that way, apart from the top tier, the rest is unexpectedly quite normal. Like a normal tier list, really. Even the characters who have not made it into the higher echelons this time are quite viable. For instance, Akuma and... ah, Rose is pretty strong this time, too.
