I'll say it again...a black woman wrote this article Castro was not some activist for black civil rights like some of y'all want to believe simply because he pissed off America by not giving up Assata Shakur. I don't support Castro. Tyrants of all kinds are unacceptable but when you have high literacy and your people aren't constantly sick you should get credit for that, considering in this bastion of "freedom" people are denied healthcare and quality education.

But people often can't do anything with that education. That's what you can't gloss over. You can become a doctor yes but it's also an over abundance of supply and not enough demand so the job becomes devalued and you're not able to be paid what the position is truly worth to society. It's the same issue we have in America now that so many college degrees that they're losing the value they once held.

So you'd rather have the problem we have where doctors and insurance companies jack up costs?

A broke doctor is a still a doctor. What do broke patients do?

You get broke doctors the incentive to become one wanes. Yes being a doctor is beneficial to society but you're deluding yourself if you think part of the motivation isn't also the money to be made. If a doctor and dude working at McDonald's make the same amount who is going to want to go through the years of training to become a doctor?

I spoke with a couple cubans from cuba here in America (two literally) and they told me that when they were in Cuba they didn't see racism (they were whiter cubans) until they came to America and then went back to Cuba. In other words this guy named Wil was telling me the racism was there for him to see, but he was blind to it because he thought it was just normal. It wasn't until he came to the US and went back to Cuba and was amazed at the racist words, and actions used against darker Cubans that was an everyday conversational and tv thing.

Now, how much can I blame Fidel for that???

I have to educate myself more. I know that the people can believe things they want regardless of the president/dictator.

Another point he brought up was what the article above said. Cubans were living in total fear (white or black) when it came to saying anything remotely critical of the government. He told me they were taught to basically worship Fidel and the government. AND if you were a doctor you got paid the same as if you were a garbage man or lawyer.

He also said uncles, brothers everyone would spy and snitch on everyone. Phones were bugged and people who were vocal would come up missing or beaten and the whole family could be punished. That's why in Cuba you're not going to hear anyone say anything negative about the country.

I'd still go, just to check it out myself; but some parts of it sound like China. As for Fidel, I think needless to say he was complex. Was he evil?? I need to know more, right now I don't see gassing his own people evil but more like a rightfully paranoid man that probably did somethings he regrets but couldn't risk changing.

Niggas are fucking stupid. I live in South Florida in the early 80s the Muriel boat lift he sent criminals over here to fuck up the U.S. And what did they do when they got here? They started raping and killing us.he made south Florida worse than it already was. Black cubans hate him also. The same idiots worship che guaverra but he also looked down on blacks. That's just one example of things I've seen people say that makes Castro "a good person" in their eyes. I said it in the other thread, don't ignore the multitude of fucked up things he did to his own people simply because he pissed off the US gov't and that this false impression that he was a champion for black civil rights is just false. He wasn't. He was an opportunist as most leaders/politicians are. Many of those who are riding the "I refuse to believe the US propaganda that he was evil" wave are willingly ignoring the atrocities his regime was responsible for just because the US hated him and that makes him a good person in their eyes. Look at the whole picture of the man not just the parts that confirm the "US gov't is evil" crowd because he was just as fucked up as the people who he was pissing off

My stance has been consistent. Don't just pick at the parts of his legacy that agree with your anti US gov't stance to make him out to be a hero because he wasn't. He became exactly what he claimed to be against to maintain his power
