When I looked at FB just now it was all "we'll never forget" and "ten years ago today..." as though the shit was the holocaust or something, but those same people don't have shit to say about the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians that have been killed because of America's reckless foreign policy (facilitated by the ignorance of our population), in fact they have the audacity to pretend that the US soldiers over there are defending our freedoms somehow... if that isn't a sheltered worldview I don't know what is.

Good point. Lots of blacks died in the New York Draft Riots of the 1860's as well. In the same area where the towers fell.

In throwing out these massive casualty figures for Iraq and Afghanistan, what percentage of those are bodies directly attributable to soldier's bullets or not so smart bombs or mistargeted drones...

And how many are at best indirect consequences of these wars, and more directly attributable to Sunnis and Shiites not being able to coexist, and Taliban and other extremists driving truck bombs or using suicide bombers to wreck an undeniable public space.

That means I should feel something for the lives that were lost at the hands of Americans that shot, raped, maimed, and all kinds of other unspeakable acts that have taken place over the years. But I don't.

I never said the sentiment shouldn't go both ways...it's interesting people are very cynical towards America for how it goes about protecting it's citizens though I doubt many would support the all out elimination of the military or the use of military force

It's not even about it being in America, or the economy. it's about thousands of people losing their lives in the most horrific manner possible. We're talking about our fellow Man here, if seeing those people jump to avoid burning to death and hear the phone calls left by loved ones who called from the airplanes to say goodbye...etc. has no affect on you....something is off. This would be a tragedy anywhere it happened because it happened to other human beings. I just don't get the total lack of empathy and how people can mock these people dying the way they did.

Exactly, America has done horrible things but this is about individual loss of life. Just because the people killed were citizens of this country doesn't mean they deserved to die the way they did....smh.

And all of those incidents were also tragic...it's not like its a contest to see what was worse and you can only feel bad for the worst scenarios. I feel sympathy for anyone who suffered tragic, sensless loss of lives.

That's exactly my point, it's not a contest. Some people only care about what is relative to their situation. Some people cry at a Save the Whales or Feed the Children commercial and others don't.

Call it what you want. I'm being a realist about 9/11. I'm not about to go out and buy my Flag pendant and put it on my shirt. I'm not about to talk about how oh so tragic it was. It happened for a reason. Americans were foolish enough to think that something like that couldn't EVER happen to them...that's that good ol' "We're better than you" attitude. It got knocked down a peg, and made everyone realize just how arrogant we Americans truly are.

Out of sight, out of mind I suppose. As long as the "bad" stuff doesn't happen on our turf, why should we care, huh? But oh noes....why oh why did they bring it to us? How dare they???
