When and why exactly did Andre 3000 end up anywhere close to the greats ?!?

DMX, Ice Cube, 2pac = not as lyrical. powerful voices. strong messages. emotional appealing music.
Andre 3000 = poetic mind. lyrical connoisseur. like a Greek philosopher with the pen.

the funny thing about the logic displayed in this thread....is that if you applied it across the board, you would look stupid.

people in here saying Andre 3000 is ten times the rapper of DMX & Ice Cube when 2Pac was cut in the exact same mold.

But only a moron would say Andre 3000 was a better rapper than 2Pac.

He's musically better than all those u listed sir... musically better than Jay too while ur at it.. The only ones I'd say u could go either way is Nas, Rakim, and Superheads baby father..

fuck. i done heard it all. i might have to migrate to SOHH after this thread.

I can't even believe somebody made a thread like this...but then again I guess its hard to except a southern artist who has the whole package (flow, delivery, versatility, storytelling, pure musical ability, content, etc, etc). Dudes clothes and looks got nothing to do with his music.......listen to his music and stop asking dumb shit.

i think a lot of people rate him so high because they relate to his whole persona and his "free spirit" (especially after a blunt or two). but to me that is not enough to be in the top 10, a good handful of rappers i rate top 10 like eminem or rakim for example are rappers i personally dont listen to but it is impossible to not acknowledge their rapping skills.

that's the difference with andre 3000. no one that isn't a fan of dude personally will put him in the top 10 rappers of all time.

Dre is nice on a mic, he is a great rapper with a great catalog. Props to Big Boi for the same reason.

Yea yall right, dre doesn't have a message in any of his songs:

It's the return of the gangsta thanks ta'
Them niggas that's on that blow
that run up in yo' crib which contains
your lady and an 8 month old
child to raise plus you true blue 'bout this music but
they do not want to hear it because they'd
rather be bouncin' and shootin' and killin' and bouncin'
and shit get down

Return of the gangsta thanks ta'
them niggas that thank [think] you soft
and say y'all be gospel rappin'
but they be steady clappin' when you talk about
bitches & switches & hoes & clothes & weed
let's talk about time travelin' rhyme javelin
somethin' mind unravelin' get down

Return of the gangsta thanks ta'
them niggas who got them kids
who got enough to buy an ounce
but not enough to bounce them kids to the zoo
or to the park so they grow up in the dark never
seein' light so they end up being like yo' sorry ass
robbin' niggas in broad ass daylight get down

Return of the gangsta thanks ta'
them niggas that get the wrong impression of expression
Then the question is Big Boi what's up with Andre?
Is he in a cult? Is he on drugs? Is he gay?
When y'all gon' break up? When y'all gon' wake up?
Nigga I'm feelin' better than ever what's wrong with you
you get down!

Word......dont you wish that nigga talked more about social issues?? and offered commentary on the culture as a whole??

"Styles will change

They say change is dang-erous

As a king standing on the terrace

While his [? ] pointing up at the rightful men

Cowards [? ] never know when your life will end

Then... live like there ain't no 'morrow

And if one come then this the motto

Now I put message in bottle

You go to the nearest beach and open your car door

And you walk to the place where the sea meets the land

Yeah it's easier to run the street than walk in the sand

Hey I'm talking young man

As if chalk in my hand

I will take yo' little ass to school

It's cool

When the kids call me sonny, the hood calls me stacks

The bees call me honey, Hollywood calls me back

Crack and I have a lot in common

We both come up in the 80s and we keep that bass pumpin'

Now that's a nega-tive comparison

Embarassin'

Unfortunate that if you come up fortunate

The street considers you lame

I thought the name of the game

Was to have a better life

I guess it ain't what a shame

I don't slang, never slung

But I'm one with the slum

That has a name well fitting

[? ] getting

No wonder why they called it the trap

So watch your tail

And I'm not kidding

The rats and mice would give advice

They say that you can paint and draw

Get out of here

Go show them that we're more than slangin' raw

That's when I broke into my big Rube impression

And I tried to enlighten but that night a learned a lesson

That the morals that you think you got go out the window

When all the other kids are fresh and they got new Nintendo

Wiis

And yo' child is down on her knees

Praying hard up to God for a Whopper with cheese

Do you b) Hit the street hard with a flare

Or do you a) Go for school for heating and air

Dare making under seven

But make a crooked killing

Or do a bit of both until your holding on a million

Brilliant

You got one foot in and one foot out

You put yo' left foot back in and then you shake it all about

You do the Hokey Pokey 'til you turn your life around

That's what it's all about

3000 out"

No nigga, but its not because they aint dropped solo LP's

Its because none of them are even remotely as good as Andre. U mean to tell me if Joell dropped a solo album that would make him more qualified than Andre 3000? Does that honestly make any sense to you, to even compare those two?

I swear its so simple...Andre is top 5 because he raps better than everyone else.

Its like yall niggas would argue Jordan aint the greatest cuz he had "too much help"

Ok, I'm done here

So Budden or Ortiz can't rap better than 90% of the industry? I take back Pap, I just heard a song from him, nigga is too horrible. And Budden been in the game for ten years and put out countless mixtapes. And yes, MM2 is a near classic, if not a classic. And in between a bunch of mediocre mixtapes he's had a lot of classic songs. Is he a GOAT contender?

OK, let's think about this. Why are Erick Sermon, Parrish Smith, Phife Dawg and Q Tip not GOATs? Tip and Erick got albums but they don't get mentioned. Phife and Parrish, were considered better than their counterparts didn't do much solowise (Parrish had one or two but they tanked), but they don't get mentioned either. And these aren't regular groups. Both of them have 3 classics each. Why should Dre, who is dope as hell, definitely better than most of the industry, be considered a GOAT? And the McGrady comparison does make sense. Wasn't TMac the best player in the league at one point? He can be looked at as one of the most talented players, but he can be a GOAT contender cuz he didnt win a ring. Dre cant be a GOAT cuz he hasnt done by himself what he did with Outkast. Again, one of the most talented, but not a GOAT.
