If a 74 year old black man tells me anything, I'd just shut up and listen so I appreciate how respectful they were when he became upset. But as far as eliminating the word, I think people need to get over themselves. I'm an adult and have enough control over public and private spheres of my life to know when it's appropriate. In any refined company, inappropriate words define their user. Me saying nigga in conversation with another black person is certainly a different context than a white person doing so, for reasons that don't need much elaboration. I suggest that the use of the term nigga by almost anyone defines their user as coarse and rude, and given the particular sensitivities related to disadvantaged groups, the assumption is going to be that a non-black using the term is racist by the ordinary definition of "racist." For a black person, judgment might be reserved depending on the context. It's really just that simple.
