That shit brought me back. I was just a kid in the late 90s during that Bad Boy era and they were running shit. Puff said they accounted for 30% of the billboard charts and that didn't include songs he produced. Shits unprecedented when you look back at it. I wonder if we'll ever see a run like that from a label again

Uhh.... The Neptunes

VA!!!

Great Docu .... Vh1 always kill these shits ...I wish they would come with some more of this type of thing as oppose to the lame ass reality shows they're constantly pushing down your throat...NH .... But I suppose they gotta give the people "what they want"

Ultimately the way this docu plays out and ties into the theme of "tanning" only further explains just how important this culture this state of mind ...this being has been to the overall zeitgeist of Americanism ....as well as the way that this culture of hiphop directly forced different races to intermingle because everyone wanted to be a part of the same thing ...hip hop had an allure to it that wasn't going to be subdued or mitigated by any pre existing racial barriers (to an extent of course ...) ...it's really just illustrating how seminal the inception and advancement of Hip Hop has been....

GoodShit.

So this bitch did the rap Olympics to showcase Eminem?

That's not a good look. That's white privilege like a muhfucka

did they speak on the Klansmen racist tapes? If not this documentary is wack & another xample of whitewashin hiphop

Okay pt 3.They started with Eminem. Now @Gee757 can talk his shit lol

Rap Olympics was formed for Em.

A lot of these battles and showcases are secretly to promote one rapper

Shaaaaaaaaaady Detroit.Fuck what a nigga got to say.Em spits

Puff and Russell made these niggas go clothes /fashion brand crazy as far as having their own shit

It was a natural progression

So when Jay got on that Button up shit it dropped NBA clothes sales. Hip Hop be changing culture and bank statements

Now we getting into Dre Beats and product marketing off hip hop

LOL I forgot AL Sharpton was the preacher for the funeral of the word Def.They had a casket and everything

Ben Horowitz is the shit

These white politicians using rap lyrics in meetings is hilarious

the black politician got some jay Z lyrics wrong and the white dude corrected him

Wow Puff interviewing Obama back when kerry was running and telling Obama to run for president

Hurricane katrina

Damn it's still crazy we got a black president who's from the era of hip hop

That's The Tanning of America for your ass

That was inspiring.great part 4

Part 4 was dope

Starting with Eminem Now @gee757 can talk his shit

Crazy how rap Olympics was formed to showcase Em

8 Mile was the 2nd biggest R rated 1st week sales when it dropped

Now we getting into hip hop's connection to high fashion and Sean John and all that

Damn Jay Z hurt NBA clothes when he said throw on a button up. These dudes were changing culture.

getting into hip hop brands like Dre Beats

Even Seinfeld wanted to be down with puff's hip hop parties.

LOL I forgot AL Sharpton was the preacher for the funeral of the word Def.They had a casket and everything

This dude Ben Horowitz is cool as hell .The Eminem of Silicon Valley. "I'm the fuckin boss"

lol All these white politicians saying hip hop lyrics in meetings.

This lady straight saying the chorus the Cream in a govt meeting

Wow Puff interviewing Obama back when kerry was running and telling Obama to run for president

This Will I am vid reminds me of The Boondocks "dickriding Obama Obama"

Clinton said Obama winning was a fantasy before he won and Obama said he got that dirt off his shoulder

Obama is #theTanningOfAmerica for real

Dope how they showed Hip hop's influence getting a black president in office.

Inspiring

Part 4 was real dope

The irony of ‪The Tanning Of America‬ is that Vh1 used to not play any type of rap/hiphop and promoted itself as a video channel w/ no rap. They used to play music for 47 yr old white dudes

That's because when VH-1 started it was for folks a bit older than the MTV generation that was running media at the time. Hence why alot of their signature early shows like Behind The music focused on older bands and groups. As people got older though and hip hop grew more powerful, rappers became the new "old school artists" and VH-1 adjusted. If you look at VH-1 in the 90's and look at it now it's like 2 different channels.

No they just changed format. it strted slowly with big RnB creeping in then Jay Z and big rappers, but those rappers weren't old at that time.he wasn't an old school artist

When MTV changed their format so did Vh1

Flava Flava was the last straw that made Vh1 be way more urban.

Just peeping pt 2

Now we taking to hip hop fashion and how dapper Dan basically invented urban wear in NY

Now we getting to The Beastie Boys

the Jewish connection to hip hop is real

How ironic that The Beastie Boys took Public Enemy on tour to their white audience and they loved them

Nowadays these white ppl are so unaware they'll never ride w/ PE now and would call them racist

If Macklemore promoted Dead Prez today. white ppl would call Dead Prez racist

Damn! The Source was outselling Rolling Stone

Now we getting into hip hop movies.

I think master P's Bout It killed hood movies.Ever since then every rapper drops a cheap Scarface knock off.

No need for studios to invest in that shit anymore

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was a game changer .Imagine a successful rapper getting a network sitcom in 2014

Vanilla Ice said ppl (black ppl) were hating on him because he was doing better than blacks at their own music. Nice

What's funny is the most vocal dissers of Vanilla ice were also white, 3rd Bass

Black teens being killed in the 90's, nothing changes Zimmerman ,Michael Dunn ,Trayvon ,Jordan Davis, Oscar Grant

LOL at Charlton Heston reciting the lyrics to Cop Killa at that press conference

Wooow never realized The Cosby Show finale came on during the LA Riots

Are you being ironic or did you not know Macklmore and RL brings out M1, Immortal Tech and other revolutionary rappers at some stops? Macklemore is corny musically but is politics is on point.

nah I actually didn't know that. I have so many convos w/ white ppl who are quick to call shit like Tupac and PE reverse racism now, that's surprising.

I wonder what songs they do when performing w/ macklemore

That was never relevant to me. I never wore fubu, never wanted to and it wasn't important who made it.
