This doc was good, but its almost like a 2nd leve beyond the cheery happy hip hop is great... if u switch your lens

The 2nd level is white people being culture vultures, black culture not getting thru without a white stamp, and just a lot of weird shyt. The story of hip hop should not have this many white voices.

Part 3 and 4 could of been done better they only mention kanye west like one time during the hurricane Katrina telecast and that was it.

the title is Tanning of America.. who the one that getting tan

White ppl and the system

exactly so Im not surprised by the amount of white folks in the series.

Yeah.It would be impossible not to mention white ppl in this conversation since it's about the slow progression of blacks in America as a minority to white ppl.

Also it would be unfair and phony to act like white ppl didn't help hip hop get where it is from day one in some way. I'm not talking about label owners,I'm talking about dudes who really where in the trenches back in the day.

There were just way more blacks in those trenches and we were and are the ones who invented and progressed the culture.Nobody can deny that

Damn! The Source was outselling Rolling Stone

I don't care how much you hate Eminem, Benzino ruining The Source was unforgivable and one of Hip-Hop biggest tragedies. Shoulda been not just our Rolling Stone, but our TIME Magazine. 5 Mics shoulda been the final word on whether a album was a masterpiece. Source Awards shoulda been our Grammys.

Shoulda woulda coulda.

What a fucking waste.

Fuck Benzino.

I like Eminem, unless you weren't referring to me with the bolded

This shit was garbage!!!!! how could you some up the 90's with out mentioning Tupac and the Deathrow era? The biggest name in hip hop history not one mention????? Steve Stoute still holding grudges from 90s and getting punked!

how they ain't talking about tupac having more influence on america than any other rapper is beyond me

but this isn't done as well as i had expected, i was pumped to watch it and it's blah to me

i know some older folks i asked to watch it and i got similar responses to all of this....tanning of america happened before but no one talks about it, a lot of rock n roll gods in the 60's and 70's got their influence from black artists in the 50's....what happened with hip hop had already happened many years before that, the older folks were not impressed at all

They didn't single out too many rappers period. The had little on Jay Z,Em,Public Enemy,NWA,Snoop, and one or 2 others.

They didn't talk about BIG specifically either.they glossed over that whole period. That shit is a doc in itself and not really relevant to the topic. We didn't need the east/west war convo in this doc

Dont get me twisted tho ... im not saying we are in this cornucopic state of racial understanding and empathy in no way ...

What I am saying tho... is that for those white folks to check the box and choose to elect a black man as the "leader of the free world" it took a certain level of familiarity a certain level of comfort with with black culture to make that decision ok in their minds ...and I think you can say hiphop culture had a very major role in that ..

...lemme kick it to you like this right...most people ..yourself and myself included would say that one of the clear reason people were attracted to Canidate Obama stems from his innate sense of "coolness" ...right? Now ...what does that mean? How do you quantify "cool" right... I'll tell you ...peep back when Obama hit that dirt off your shoulders bit during his speech when he started talking about other politicians hatin on him... That right there ...that's that "coolness" quantified as a tangible thing ...and he does shit like that all the time ...that connects with people ..and so much of his tangible "coolness" relates to him being able to connect with the youth ...and there's nothing more youth driven than hiphop ..they're synonymous with each other ..

So ...I get what puff is saying when he states that hiphop got Obeezy elected because I feel as though to a very large degree the cultures impact on him and in turn his ability to connect that with younger people in order to energize his base had an inescapable effect on the result ions of that '08 election ...So to that point I think puff is accurate ..now were I can understand your point is if Puff was saying that hiphop is the ONLY reason that Obeezy is in office ...if that was his message or his intent I can 1hunnid feel what your saying about shit being a stretch ...but I don't think that's what he meant ...dudes like puff know how to grab headlines and are the kings of uhhhhhh how do you say .....overstated hubris maybe? Lol ...grandstanding? Lol ...shit I can't really get the right word for it but to a man if you asked him "hey do you believe hiphop is the sole reason Obama is in office" I doubt he'd say "oh yeah without question" and because of that distinction I feel like I get where he was coming from with that statement ...as well as the other panelist who kinda alluded to the correlation as well ... I just don't think it's that egregious a statement once you put it in the right context..

And damn you Gabs! for making me "break character" and actually get into a bit of intelligent conversation on this muthafucka man ...lmao

smh@ the bold.....fam i get wat ya tryna say but everytime u refer 2 obama as a BLK MAN u r talkin like its still SLAVERY cuz that is FALSE obama is not a BLK MAN he is a MIXED MAN his mother is WHITE & his daddy is BLK thats y these whites voted 4 him cuz he waS MIXED not cuz he was BLK....if obama was a blk man wit 2 BLK PARENTS he wouldnt b president obamas WHITENESS got him elected white america will not elect a BLK PRESIDENT the closes well get is a MULATTO...any blk kid wit 2 BLK PARENTS n america that think they have a chance 2 b president like obama is fooling themselves cuz america will never have a BLK PRESIDENT!..

When has the dominant society ever considered "mixed" to be "white" ??....them white folks don't care that he has a white momma ....he got one drop of black in him thusly making him a black man in their eyes

Basically...lol at how soon wE forget and disregard history.

Jazz and rock artists...even back to blues were among the first to play in segregated venues...were influential in fashion slang language, dance routines. And tgats jus music. Lets get into how "tanned" america is and has been when it comes to food...especially southern. U think them spices and seasonings and recipies came from wales, normandy etc? Ha. And we see how kind history has been to them trailblazers and the negro of yesteryear in general. Weve been at this "unifying" point so to speak so to speak several times in history already and we got the same song from the past on repeat.

People generally know the message that's being presented is bullshit, but coddling whites when speaking on race is profitable so we gotta sift through shit like this...

With all due respect to jazz blues ...those genres did not have little white kids running out and buying starter jackets Adidas and hanging black men on their walls ....white people used to sneak up to Harlem to to watch thelonious monk and count bassie and dizzie gellespie ....that shit was done on the low back then.... Most of those white teens had no idea that led zeppelin was hacking shit from old blues records ....they had no clue what was happening ....hip hop was the first genre where you saw the tangible effect of tanning from the standpoint of "music" influencing culture ...and again that's no diss to the impact of the other genres but I'm just sayin

The rest of what both of y'all were kicking I would definitely agree with tho ...black future IS American culture to a large degree ..so much of our shit gets lifted

There has, never been anything "low" about white, infatuation wit black music and mannerisms since slavery days. It was well known. And was not hidden. U think nat king cole and sammy davis performing in segregated venues was a damn secret? Miles Davis' biography detailed how they would jam in the hoods in uptown Manhattan, then get paid crazy money to perform downtown for uppity racist whites and how the strip would occasionally get shut down cause it led to fly niggas showing out wit local fly white bitches flossing on the white strips too conspicuously doing nigga shit. They wanted that shit so much a,lot of black musicians got bought out of being regulars at black venues to perform exclusively in white venues...or even turned around and bought the whole damn black venue....or had a white venue in a white area presented in black face...so many levels... Check out Miles Davis' biography....nothing was "low" abt it, at all. The shit jus wasnt documented on film to the extent it is today.

U may (may) have a,point wit that track jacket stuff but wed have to ask,our elders from back then if whitey tried to copy their fashion from back then...

And again this goes beyond,music...jack johnson, mammys cooking, dancing (the twist, anyone? one of many hood dance crazes that whites jumped on) etc...america been "tanned" ,...

This fake hip hop unification shit is a,newly titled rerun.
