Damn didn't know youtube had it up. I 'haven't seen this since 88 - 89. First and only RUN DMC tape I owned was Tougher Than Leather.
Honestly, I was a HUGE Run DMC fan when I was a teenager. But for whatever reason the movie never made it to Boston. My guess is that the movie theaters associated Rap with violence.
In any case I've never seen the movie until now.
An interesting note. The Raising Hell album with Walk This Way and Peter Piper came out in 1986 and went 3X plat. This is when people first started sampling. The movie, Tougher Than Leather was made in 1987 along with the album. The corporation, Def Jam who's parent company was Columbia wanted to clear all the samples in the movie and on the album and synchronize their release. All the sample clearances took a year and by the time the album came out, newer, fresher styles of sampling and sampling techniques evolved. Also rappers got more socio-political between 1987-1988.
By the time the Tougher Than Leather album came out it had been shelved for a year and it was noticeable. There were a few good tracks but Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B and Rakim, Stetsasonic, EPMD and Big Daddy Kane all dropped albums that were newer and fresher than Run DMC's Tougher Than Leather LP.
If that album dropped when it was supposed to it would have seemed like a better album, but it was kinda dated. Remember rap music wasn't even 10 years old yet, so shelving an album for a year made a big difference in style.
