Jason Chaffetz will be leaving Congress

Rep. Jason Chaffetz will not seek re-election in 2018, two sources who have been informed of his decision tell BuzzFeed News.

The Utah Republican was first elected in 2008 to represent Utah’s 3rd District.

As chairman the House Oversight Committee, Chaffetz has drawn attention and criticism for his handling of conflicts of interest investigation into Hillary Clinton and potential investigations into President Donald Trump. Some of that criticism bubbled over in recent months, with angry constituents lambasting Chaffetz at a packed town hall over the February recess.

A spokesperson for Chaffetz did not immediately return a request for comment.

Nunes worked with Trump Admin to create fake Susan Rice scandal

When House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes claimed that he had found documents proving that Susan Rice had spied on the Trump campaign, it was immediately pointed out that Nunes’ so-called evidence did not actually prove what he claimed they did. Now a new report indicates that President Donald Trump and Nunes may have deliberately worked together to manufacture a fake scandal, most likely in an attempt to distract America from the real one in which the president is embroiled.

An intelligence source told reporter Ryan Lizza of The New Yorker that intelligence officials were told by the White House that there was a manufactured witch hunt:

“We are going to mobilize to find something to justify the president’s tweet that he was being surveilled. They put out an all-points bulletin and said, ‘We need to find something that justifies the president’s crazy tweet about surveillance at Trump Tower.’ And I’m telling you there is no way you get that from those transcripts, which are about as plain vanilla as can be.”

The end result, according to the two intelligence sources with whom Lizza spoke, was that a fake scandal was manufactured over former national security adviser Susan Rice asking to unmask the identities of Americans caught up in intelligence intercepts. One source told Lizza that “there’s absolutely nothing there,” and it was observed that Rice could not have possibly known in all of the cases whether the individuals she was asking the NSA to unmask were named of Trump officials.

The transcripts had initially been found by a former Nunes staffer who is currently employed by the Trump administration. He shared them with Nunes, who proceeded to use them to justify a tweet sent out by the president on March 4 that he has since been unable to prove.

Exxon Mobil has reportedly applied for a waiver to work in Russia

Exxon Mobil, the company once ran by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, is seeking a waiver from U.S. sanctions on Russia, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The U.S. oil and gas corporation has applied to the Treasury Department to be exempt in a bid to resume its joint venture with the Russia oil giant PAO Rosneft in the Black Sea, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The newspaper said Exxon has been seeking permission to work with Rosneft in areas banned by U.S. sanctions. The State Department is one of the agencies that have a say on the waiver, the Journal said.

The news came as the FBI investigates any possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia after the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

CNBC has reached out to Exxon and the Treasury Department for comment on the Journal's report.

Reuters: Kremlin-Backed Think Tank Crafted Plan To Swing Election To Trump

A Kremlin-backed think tank’s plan to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential race in Donald Trump’s favor was distributed at the highest levels of the Russian government, Reuters reported Wednesday.

A handful of current and former U.S. officials told Reuters that the first document, compiled by the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies in June, urged the Kremlin to wage a propaganda war on social media and state-backed media outlets promoting a U.S. candidate who supported better relations with Russia. Another paper, released in October when pundits and polls were predicting a Hillary Clinton victory, argued in favor of promoting claims about voter fraud to stoke questions about the legitimacy of the election results.

President Vladimir Putin’s office appoints the retired Russian intelligence officials who work at the institute, according to Reuters.

The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the U.S. election, with Putin calling such allegations “lies” used to promote “domestic American political agendas.” The Institute and Kremlin did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

These documents are in line with the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment of how exactly Russia took steps to sway the election, which included the promotion of “fake news” stories, use of bots to push that false information, and cyber-hacking campaigns against Democratic targets. The Senate and House Intelligence Communities are currently investigating the extent of Russia’s interference into the presidential race, and whether Trump staffers collaborated with Russian officials to do so.

“Putin had the objective in mind all along, and he asked the institute to draw him a road map,” a former senior U.S. intelligence official told Reuters.
