Marvel's Iron Fist Casts Colleen Wing

colleenwing-177038.jpg

Jessica Henwick, who has recently had small roles in both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Game of Thrones, will come to Netflix and Marvel's Iron Fist as comicbook character Colleen Wing. The role is described as the female lead on the show, "an invaluable ally to Iron Fist as he returns to his life in New York." She joins previously cast Finn Jones, who will play the title role of Danny Rand aka Iron Fist.

Wing, in the pages of Marvel Comics, is one half of the "Daughters of the Dragon" alongside Misty Knight. She was created in 1974 by Doug Moench and Larry Hama as a martial arts expert who frequently teams with Iron Fist and his own oft-partner Luke Cage. Her specialty is swordsmanship and Japanese martial arts.

The character, meanwhile, will be the second Asian-American superhero from either of the "big two" in their current universes, after Chloe Bennet's Daisy Johnson on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sure, she doesn't have super powers, but Wing definitely qualifies thanks to her heroic feats and the company she keeps. This, after Henwick broke ground as an Asian, female pilot in the Star Wars universe, keeps her pushing boundaries, as well.

Iron Fist is in development now as the fourth Marvel-Netflix series, due likely to premiere sometime in 2017. Marvel TV also has Luke Cage and Jessica Jones Season 2 in active development, with The Defenders team-up mini-series still to follow.

Would've been even more dope to see a Miles Morales Spidey

I don't have a problem with Miles but they gotta do Peter first.

Im tired of this teenage Spider Man and frankly, it's not the SM I grew up with. Peter was a grown man with real problems and the balancing of being a hero and a good husband was a constant theme.

I would have preferred the Toby movies being movie cannon and the brand just moving forward. No reboots, just a continuation of the story. We should be seeing a late 20s to early 30s SM by now.

Black Panther Issue 1 Review

THE KING AND THE CONQUERED

Exploring The Concept Of Black Heroism

Written by: Ziggiy

There is no force like success, and that is why the individual makes all effort to surround himself throughout life with the evidence of it; as of the individual, so should it be of the nation. Our success educationally, industrially and politically is based upon the protection of a nation founded by ourselves. And the nation can be nowhere else but in Africa. Glorious shall be the battle when the time comes to fight for our people and our race. Look to Africa, for there a king will be crowned.

-Marcus Garvey

In July of 1966, the Black Panther debuted within the pages of Fantastic Four #52. He was T’Challa, defender and monarch of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. He was the first black superhero to be introduced within mainstream american comics; he was fierce, intelligent, confident, and most importantly for comic book readers, cool as hell. T’Challa was able to prove his worth by defeating the first family one by one to test THEIR skills, and in the end was portrayed as not only a force to be reckoned with, but to also be respected. Over the course of decades, T’Challa has been through several iterations, most notably from those of Christopher Priest and Reginald Hudlin. Christopher Priest is often cited as the most accomplished and critically acclaimed author of the Panther’s stories, he is to Black Panther as Frank Miller is to Daredevil within the comic fandom. Mysterious, calculating, and always seeming to be two steps ahead of both his foe and his audience, Priest took a character who had been too often relegated to the hell of tokenism, and reinvigorated the essence of what the Panther stood for, regality. Reginald Hudlin gave fans an epic and sweeping saga, which put T’Challa front and center in some of Marvel Comics biggest crossover events of the time, he is also married to one of the most high profile characters in the universe, Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm of the X-Men. For a period, T’Challa’s status as the greatest Monarch in Wakanda’s history was unblemished.

Marvel Mockingbird Series Spinoff ABC

Marvel’s Mockingbird Series Starring Adrianne Palicki Lands ABC Pilot Order (EXCLUSIVE)

The characters’ story is targeted toward young adults, making “Cloak and Dagger” a seamless fit for Freeform (previously ABC Family) whose target audience is “Becomers,” the 14-34 demo.

Marking the network’s first-ever Marvel series, Freeform is following in the footsteps of big sister net ABC, which has a slew of Marvel properties on its slate including “Agents of SHIELD” and “Agent Carter,” plus Mockingbird spinoff “Marvel’s Most Wanted” and a top-secret Marvel project from John Ridley in development. Getting Freeform into the Marvel game is a smart move for Disney-ABC, as the cable network is held to lower ratings standards than a big broadcast network. (ABC has struggled with ratings for “Agent Carter,” which remains on the bubble in the wake of critical praise.)

Superhero fare is a new genre for Freeform, which recently pushed into fantasy fare with “Shadowhunters.” That drama was just renewed for a second season, and “Cloak and Dagger” will pair nicely with the saga series, broadening the net’s programming.

Mockingbird, Variety has learned exclusively.

Titled “Marvel’s Most Wanted,” the drama will focus on popular “SHIELD” characters Adrianne Palicki‘s Bobbi Morse (also known as Mockingbird) and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter. The two actors will topline the pilot and prospective series.

“SHIELD” producers Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski co-created the project for Marvel and ABC Studios, co-writing the pilot. They will serve as showrunners and exec producers together with Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb also exec producing.

Insiders say the series is not a spinoff, per se, but rather an entirely new project solely focused on the two characters to continue their story. Though plot details are scarce at this point, “Marvel’s Most Wanted” will follow the pair and their adventures together.

At this time, ABC has not made any decisions regarding premiere date or a path of introduction, such as introducing the new show as a planted episode during “SHIELD.”

An “Agents of SHIELD” offshoot was originally reported in April, but was soon after shot down with the network deciding not to move forward. However, during New York Upfronts this spring, ABC president Paul Lee alluded to the possibility of the series being resurrected, teasing, “It certainly is a possibility of spinning them off.”

Lee added that “SHIELD” had hit its creative stride, suggesting that the net didn’t want to mess around with a formula that was working — which includes Palicki and Blood’s storylines. “We absolutely love those characters on ‘SHIELD,'” he said, at the time.

But with “SHIELD” coming back for Season 3, in addition to “Agent Carter” returning for Season 2, there’s still a large Marvel appetite at ABC. Also in the works at the network is a top-secret Marvel project helmed by “American Crime” creator John Ridley.
