hbo is an established brand who despite pirating has people killing each other for hbo go accounts. Tidal is a start up brand that needs to change its image and get subscribers. So bootlegging and competition is hurting tidal 10 times more than it hurts hbo.

HBO has just as much competition out there. Netflix and Amazon trying to eat their food. The only reason they not in complete struggle mode is because of their deals with other companies and even the cable those other companies that they are dealing with are are nervous (Cable companies crying for net neutrality and Apples shady anti competition tactics). They want to keep their deal in tact which is why they haven't rolled out completely. Look how nervous they got when all those game of thrones episodes got leaked. If they didn't have the shows, their branding wouldn't matter. It's all about the content and its ease of access. We'll see what else Tidal has to offer.

Likewise exclusive content is something that is huge for video streaming and channels like hbo and showtime. However in music streaming price/interface/mobility are the big factors in the success or failure of a music streaming site. Shitty exclusive Beyonce or Rihanna songs backfired against tidal. Likewise in music a classic album in one that get sits success from being readily available. Hence why tidals exclusive content is not helping that much. Especially when i streamed that dope jay z show for free.
