At a press conference in New York today, Spotify announced the addition of several new features, including video content, podcasts, news, original programming, and a new running program. The new features launch on iPhones today in the U.S., with further launches coming soon.

Spotify's video content will include original and rebroadcasted shows from partners including Vice News, the BBC, NBC, Slate, E!, Adult Swim, MTV, Comedy Central, ESPN, Condé Nast, and TED. There will be a video series presented by Amy Poehler's Smart Girls website called "Dance Move of the Day", a series called "Turntable" that pairs chefs and musicians, and more.

Podcasts from WNYC, American Public Media, the BBC, PRX, and more will be available. Spotify will also host its own radio shows presented by artists like Tyler, the Creator and Odd Future, Icona Pop, Jungle, and Mike Skinner.

The "Spotify Now" feature contains activity-specific playlists, meant to sync with different times during the day, such as "early morning" or "songs to sing in the shower." Those playlists will be generated by Spotify.

The "Spotify Running" feature finds music that syncs to a user's run. The feature detects the user's pace, and then finds a song with a similar tempo. Spotify also commissioned original tracks that can play at different tempos, depending on one's pace, from artists including Tiësto (who appeared at the press conference).

To close the press conference, D'Angelo came on stage to perform, backed by ?uestlove on drums. (Last week, he released a Spotify Sessions EP.) Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson of "Broad City" also appeared.

how dare they do a press conference without a twitter profile change of 20 rich artists and a radio head song playing for 10 minutes! They should have had Biggie and Tupac sign a contract declaring Spotify for all!

"Spotify 9 million they ain't say sssshhhhhiiiitttt!!!!"

-Jay Z-

they never paraded a bunch of megastars on stage they built one the best music streaming services out. and outside of grooveshark the only real music service that let you pick any song or album and play it through with just a few commercials for free.

Concert was an hour and half too long. Fell asleep 30 minutes in. Memphis BLeek comes in and fucks up his 2 minutes. B-Sides? More like Reasonable Doubt/Blue Print and other shit that the audience couldn't give 2 shits about. Tidal is a disaster and this was Jay's way of trying to bring any sort of attention. Give it 3 more months and he'll do a C-Side conert and bring out Amil and a Biggie hologram.

These posts about tidal shows how most of you are not musicians or understand the true business of music.

It's pretty much the same format as Jack White's Third Man business, which he is apart of Tidal too.

Based on the past 15 years it seems like the music business doesnt understand business or consumers or evolving technology...

For example...i didnt watch the concert but if i wanted to i could watch it live somewhere within minutes just by being nifty with google or wait a couple of days and see it plastered on mainstream websites...

that being said im not against tidal or jay z...but i am against rising prices and/or exclusivity

and that is the issue with tidal they claim it helps the artist but the price doesn't help the fans. You pay just as much or more if you have free spotify. Without a middle man they should have cheaper price points like 5.99 and $!5 not 19.99 and 9.99.

“He’s not mad about mass incarceration. He’s not mad about wealth inequality. He’s not mad about the minimum wage not being high enough. He’s mad because millionaire artists are not getting a bigger cut of the money from the music that they make,” Watkins said. “Whatever his little corporate beef is right now, if that beef were not occurring, would Jay Z still be pulling out the race card on this issue?”

Jay Z bought Tidal in January for a reported $56 million. Since then, it’s been besieged by branding problems, bad press, layoffs and the departure of CEO Andy Chen.

The streaming service was originally billed as being created to put control of music back in the hands of artists. Its relaunch in March — by some of the richest musicians on the planet including Madonna, Kanye West, Beyoncé and Rihanna — arguably hurt the brand’s image.

The streaming service kicked off with two subscription tiers: a basic membership for $9.99 per month and a $19.99 membership for better sound quality. While Tidal has promised exclusive content, some consumers say that’s not enough, especially when they can use “freemium” streaming services like Spotify.

On Monday, Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj dropped the surprise music video for “Feeling Myself” exclusively on Jay Z’s service. Within hours of its debut, the footage had been ripped and posted on other websites, reinforcing the question of whether Tidal is worth the cost.

“Are there a million people who would sign up to get that exclusive?” Russ Crupnick, managing partner of streaming industry research firm MusicWatch, recently asked TheWrap. “Forgetting piracy. If that special album came out in Walmart or iTunes, how many people would buy it?”

While Spotify has a free option, and Pandora generates free custom radio stations, Tidal is just an app that streams music — for a hefty price, Crupnick explained.

Jay Z did not respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

But as Tidal’s struggles mount, Watkins believes they have little to do with the struggle for civil rights, despite Jay Z’s protestations.

“If you’re a Jay Z fan and you want to get behind him on this because he told you to do it, that’s fine. But this is far from any kind of meaningful statement on civil rights.”

Dame Dash and Dr.Boyce Watkins talk about the "Spotify diss freestyle"

This is one time I agree with Dame. Whatever the motivation, I think the message is good.

I like Jay's music, but he acted as a Trojan horse for the Barclay's and generally speaking has a track record of shitting on the little guy.

http://news.hiphopearly.com/kanye-w...bum-exclusively-apples-new-streaming-service/

Kanye West’s upcoming album look like it’s going to be an exclusive. Just not on Jay Z’s TIDAL service, which ‘Ye had been announced as a “co-owner” of.

Hits Daily Double reports that Swish, the album formally know as So Help Me God, might be connected to the upcoming launch of Apple’s streaming service

Kanye West is making changes, distancing himself from Tidal, firing Roc Nation and managing himself, with an unofficial assist from the Jenner-Kardashian clan,” HDD reports in their Rumor Mill feature. “As for Kanye’s long-delayed album, there’s some chatter that the release will be connected to Apple Music’s launch.

What makes this particularly interesting is that the usually reliable HDD is doubling down on their reporting that West has fired Jay Z’s Roc Nation for management, which Ye’s reps denied early this month.

A few weeks ago, The New York Times reported that under the direction of Jimmy Iovine Apple plans to launch their new streaming service aggressively.

Mr. Iovine has set the tone of the transformation of Apple’s music plans, according to music executives. Mr. Iovine, who reports to Eddy Cue, Apple’s head of software and Internet services, has been leading aggressive talks to secure prominent album releases that will be exclusive to Apple, akin to what Beyoncé did when she released her self-titled album on iTunes in December 2013.

Swish — or whatever ‘Ye’s new album will end up being called — would certainly count as a “prominent” release.

This whole Tidal shit is funny as fuck to me, especially with stupid ass niggas. 6 months ago these same mfs were claiming Jay-z was Illuminati and in cahoots with them. Now these same mfs are celebrating with the struggles of Tidal. Which is it? He sold his sold to these crackas or not, because he wouldn't be getting opposition if he did.

It seems to me that it's a obvious smear campaign on some deliberate shit. All these companies (Apple, Spotify, Pitchfork, Tech companies, etc) have working relationships with each other. They are protecting investments and being bias with their criticism.

actually the reverse could be asked of jay. does he want to play with the big boys or does he wanna bitch about his race and say the games not fair. Fact of the matter is part of getting to a billion is he has to face rivals like spotify/apple/google in a flooded marketplace. Just how Jays rocafella empire bodied allot of competing rappers trying to be moguls spotify is doing the same shit to tidal. Jay either needs to fight fair and stop whinning about racism or sell the company and step away from the big boys.

While his race and his original line of career (rapper) are a very small part of why people are going in on him the majority of the spotify warfare has nothing to with his race. Its because they are a killing machine trying to kill competition. Granted Jays launch and lack of freemium service has killed himself really.

I don't think this is a race thing for the most part and i don't think Jay-z is making it about race either. To me what Jay was talking about is knowing your value and not being underpaid for your shit. That Mike Brown, Trayvon, etc reference is just giving historical perspective. My shit is why are these consumers and techies even criticizing it so hard or acting like Tidal is DOA. It's too quick to make that decision and the more Tidal's there are on the market the better it is for the consumers. I feel as if people aren't being rational about Tidal at all, like who with a bit of common sense says something is a flop a month after it's released.

Niggas need to be honest. Jay-z disturbed the status quo. These higher ups know blacks are the biggest cosumers in the music business and that Jay-z has build up enough cache in the game change shit.

Retardation at it's finest ..you gotta love the transparent attempt to deflect from Jay's actual point.....

"look look ...he aint MLK soooooooooooo he can't talk about any inequality... where was his march thru selma!!!"

FOH ...lmao
