But if not then maybe Zamasu did convince a God of Destruction to fuse with a past version of Goku. Which would mean they went to the past and altered, and the "gods" are forbidden to do that.

The manga is coming out super slow but it's really good. It feels a lot more like DBZ than the Super anime does...and I like how it made Trunks out to be just as powerful as a Pre-God Goku.

The Anime is pretty good too though...

and honestly at the end of the episode when dude said "I will kill you Son Goku"...that was the first time in a while a villain said that and I legitimately had concern for Goku's health. They've done a good job making everything mysterious and making Vegeta and Goku seem like underdogs.

sidenote: I want Trunks to end this...this is his timeline they came into and fucked up...he deserves to finish it
