Povetkin's Promoter: Deontay Wilder Fight Will Happen in Russia!
By Gregory Stangrit
Last month, Andrei Ryabinsky, promoter for Olympic gold medal winner and former WBA champion Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22KOs), submitted the winner purse bid to secure the promotional rights for the mandatory fight against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35KOs).
Ryabinsky put in a bid of over $7 million to win the promotional rights to the bout. Wilder's side, led by promoter Lou DiBella, put in $5.1 million.
Before the purse bid took place, the two sides were discussing the possibility of a May date in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. Ryabinsky was very frustrated with the outcome and felt a purse bid was the only way to get a deal done.
There has been speculation on where the fight will end up. That speculation is now over as Ryabisnky has revealed that Russia will indeed become the destination for the contest. No date or venue has been announced, but Ryabinsky has mentioned late May in recent weeks.
"I had several options - cut the money or to create a comfortable environment for Alexander," - Ryabinsky said. "Of course, I've decided to chose the latter. The fight will be in Russia. We will be very happy to have Deontay Wilder and his team as our guests. I do not know who will win in this battle - Alexander or Deontay Wilder. But I want to be calm, I've done everything I could on my end - and now it all depends on Alexander."
Wilder fought in January and retained his title by knocking out Artur Szpilka in the ninth round at the Barclays Center. Povetkin, who was ringside for Wilder's most recent defense, was last seen in the ring in November. He took a stay-busy fight by stopping huge Polish contender Mariusz Wach in the twelfth round. Povetkin has already started training for the bout with Wilder.

Canelo: I Only Demanded What Was Fair and Amir Khan Accepted
By Miguel Rivera
WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) believes he gave very fair terms to Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) for their upcoming showdown on May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The fight takes place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds, which has caused a lot of controversy among insiders who believe the fight is not being fought on an even playing field.
Khan, who moved up to welterweight not long ago, agreed to move up by eight pounds. There are conflicting stories as to which side demanded the catch-weight of 155.
Canelo claims that he was considering the idea of having it staged at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds, but Khan wanted a catch-weight of 155 in order to have the WBC middleweight title at stake.
"I only demanded what was fair and he accepted the conditions," Canelo told ESPN Deportes. "I climb into the ring at whatever weight that's going to give me the win, whether it's 180 or 190 pounds - if I think it's the appropriate [weight] for me on the day of the fight."
José 'Chepo' Reynoso, coach of Canelo, says their promoter, Golden Boy Promotions' Oscar De La Hoya, was the lead figure in the negotiations. He says Canelo is not a natural 160-pounder and the fight was made as low as possible to be within the middleweight limit.
"We have a team behind us, including Oscar de la Hoya, who is in charge of all those details and negotiates the agreements," Chepo said. "We expect a complicated fight with a fast opponent. Canelo is not a natural Middleweight. The fight is at 155 pounds, because the weight is within the division limit which is 160-pounds."
