My alma mater.
Grambling's financial issues come more from former Governor Bobby Jindal Louisiana's cutting higher education budget by more than 60% in his failed attempt to balance the budget. Tiger alums not giving a fuck and supporting their alma mater financially like they're suppose to.
Another in state school like LSU does not feel those cuts as much with its big money boosters and football program that produces millions.
LSU actually transferred 11 million from its athletic department to its general fund to retain certain majors.
Smaller schools like Grambling and Southern cannot do that therefore, we bear the brunt of budget cuts from the state it resulting in using older facilities that probably should have been updated 20 years ago, getting rid of certain majors, etc. If we had blue chip athletes oping to go to Grambling that would bring legitimacy, prestige, and most of all money. Then we could be able to complete with those ACC and SEC schools as far as facilities go. That could lead to us being in the College Bowl Playoff and the NCAA tournament. With all of that extra revenue, we could divert those funds to struggling departments and programs.
Make no mistake about it though the education at GSU and other in state HBCUs is as good and most of the time better than other in state schools that are PWI.
I had to fix that for you playboy.
I agree with you alums should do more. Sadly our alums do not give back to our schools on the level that they do at PWIs. I believe there are many reasons for that that I will not go into.
Sadly, HBCU's probably will not ever be able to recruit on the same level as the PWIs unless its a change in attitude in the world class athletes.
The PWIs generally have TV deals, state of the art facilities, pro type camps with pro scouts, to combine with that the big money boosters. I know it's illegal under the NCAA guidelines, but we know those boosters and school big wigs sometimes hook those young men up with vehicles, jobs, spending money, and other incentives.
It's harder for HBCU's with much smaller endowments and budgets to compete with that. Combined with that you have the mindset a lot of these kids and their parents have that the bigger PWIs will give them the inside track to getting drafted, a pro league contract, and possible riches.
