It was weird in the recent story arc before rebirth, Supes was able to use a new power similar to a solar flare. It weakened him though and eventually he used it so often that it destroyed some of the cells he had that absorbed yellow sun radiation so he never regained his powers fully. Then he discovered that Kryptonite opened up these cells and he used Kryptonite to regain his strength instead of it weakening him. Stopped reading at that point though and have to catch up and see how he dies and how the older supes takes his place.
