Ebro's logic is shakey. So you mean to tell me that "Cashin Out" "earned" it's spot on Hot97? On an account of what? Yet local cats here can't get no spins? Then you wonder why Nicki Minaj had to go down south to get a chance to be heard. If fucking NY radio aren't breaking new artists from NY then who the fuck will? ATL play their local artists then they go national and Hot 97 eventually plays the record. So don't they think that if NY radio played NY artists that it wont eventually get national exposure? Ebro needs to be fired.

cash out had the right business minds behind him to make people aware of his music. radio stations only play whats popular. if they didnt play whats popular, hot 97 wouldnt be in business. its not the radio's job to break artist its the artist and his primary investor's job. its no different than in the 90's. you think biggie would have gotten national exposure without diddy creating a platform for him to display his talents?

actually it is the radios job to break new artist. just like major record labels these days that wanna act like indy labels by having the artists do their job. radio these days don't wanna fuck with an artist without payola.

radio use to take pride in breaking new stars now these niggas want you to come into the game with a buzz already dont make sense

hot 97 in ny only plays artist during the day if their parent company writes a cheque. only in the middle of the night you might hear some up and coming artist .

Nope they did not. Once again people rewriting history. Only thing is back then what you thought was "DJ's breaking stars with pride" then was the same regular politics as now.

KMEL on the block.

A clear channel approved bay area artist only time slot on the weekend. Las Vegas got a time slot dedicated to nothing but Latino rap. If niggas prolly had a higher demand for local or underground artist the radio would support it.

Nowadays it seems like you have to do it yourself on the internet before you can hit it big. If I were an artist (which i'm not), my plan of attack to get my name out there would be:

1. Make cover songs of popular stuff with my own spin and put them on youtube.

2. Share all my videos on facebook.

3. Tweet all the time and get everyone i know to re-tweet, and @ my cover songs to the artists who did the originals.

4. Keep a blog that tracks what i'm working on and where i'm gonna be.

5. Make mixtapes and EPs and give them away for free on my blog

6. Load original music onto youtube and be a youtube partner.

7. Load music to soundcloud

8. Post on music forums

9. Get people i know to share all my links on reddit and comment on all the posts.

10. Play my music in big parks for free (like Central Park, etc), and give out copies of my music to whoever stops to listen.

Also take whatever money i keep on the side and spend it on paying radio stations big or small to play my record.

I just came in to say this. I've been on hiatus from this website for about 6 months because I'm now a radio host in my city. And my show is called "The College Draft". I call it "The College Draft" because everyone wants to be a rapper, but the ones who are good enough to be under the industries scope are the ones who get to the draft. Like: Joey Badass, Grandemarshalle, ASAP, Sir Micheal Rocks, School Boy Q. I showcase artist in the underground circuit who bring quality music. Although I've been getting respect from people in my city for playing quality and interviewing quality artist. What the DJ said was ABSOLUTELY right. This is a business, the artist I play are "minor league" players, and its funny because I'm one of the one only ones who pushes "minor league" music more then anyone in my country nevermind city.. If you disagreed with what he said, its because you dont understand the music industry. If an artist wants to get exposure on the radio they have to create a HUGE buzz, not just the internet, they have to get the STREETS talking.

Also, going to NYC frequently and being in southside jamaica, and Queensbridge, i'll tell you this, noone gives a fuck, about the underground circuit NOONE. the streets is the majority. Obv we are all going to disagree because we're on a hip hop forum..we are the ones looking for quality music, we are NOT the majority..

I'm not being biased, I'm just being real. Its the indsutry folks, deal with it. I was lucky to get that show, Im doing this show independently on FM radio, trying to compete, people always say my show is killing it, but Im a small fish in a big sea, and the main hip hop station is a shark that will always be bigger. Its business

as a dj though, if you really like somebody who dont really get play and the opportunity presents itself to let the people hear something from them

put their shit on !

Don't matter anyway, NY is coming back with or without the radio, just watch. And I bet this time next year or 2014 the radios will be all over their dicks. Even nicki had to leave ny to get on

fuck new york and fuck that grimy timberlands and carhart music

that shit is played out

niggas ain't tryna hear "ay yo me and my nigga vega caught a body by the bodega, splittin dutches wit a razor"

fuck all that

Agreed, and much props to you for giving them cats a chance. As far as your other post, it's not like they should get the same slot/plays as Wayne or Rick Ross. And I don't know about other stations, but with Power 105 and Hot 97 in NY, the same 10 songs at most are played, some twice within an hour. And just like someone said, Ghost and Styles have careers already. We all know that mainstream radio caters to one demographic and one sound, and that's the problem. That's why Trinidad James can get a song on the radio after rapping for 10 months, and Raekwon can't get plays despite having a 20 year career. My issue is diversity, not necessarily new cats that think they can get on cuz they cut a mixtape in they mama crib with a FL Studio demo and a Sonar XL program. But the newer generation is getting more diverse than the past few years, and I wish radio would show that.

Yes they are...Ghostface and styles P was hot in the early 2000s (obv in the 90s too for niggas who wanna get technical), they had a major league buzz BACK THEN when their music caught the ear of the masses and they were signed to big labels, but now they have a minor league buzz, they still come out with quality but nobodies really checkin for em. I think you think Im trying to insult artist who are minor league but thats far from the case considering I wouldnt be a radio host if they didnt let me play 100% percent of what I want which are "minor league artist", Im just calling it how the industry calls it. minor league>>>>>major league. I'm on your side, dont get it twisted. but its the industry man.

Just because the word "minor" is in there doesnt mean less, peep the context I'm using.

By the way Ghostface is a legend and Styles P is damn near a legend IMO.

No problem man, lord knows im tryin, I do this shit for the love of music and I just want everybody in my city to hear originality and quality thru the speakers man. My show is like the reason in radio form. but yea its sad man, I agree I think the radio should really have shows dedicated to the independent/underground scene but have very strict A&R's and bloggers judging the music before it gets aired so it can still be radio friendly and maybe dedicate 3 hours from 9-12pm when less people are listening and they can cater to an older demographic, but I mean theres always college radio, internet radio, that give artist shine, people just gotta know where to look. Like someone said in NYC on 89.9 FM they play all the independent artist that bring quality.
