Hot 97 has been the subject of some hot debate lately as the radio station continues to bypass underground artists in favor of the mainstream. On the newest episode of The Combat Jack Show, Combat Jack invited Hot 97 program director Ebro Darden to the studio to discuss the issue.

Listen to the complete, 75-minute episode below to hear some solid arguments from both sides of the dispute.

In Chicago, 107.5 does this thing called download or delete. They will play a local artist--then ask listeners to call in or text if they like the song and provide some feedback. If it gets more downloads than deletes, it will get acknowledgment and some air play.

That seems fairly democratic, tho I think that they should do it more often.

They used to do that in DC...don't know if they do it anymore but that is the very reason Wale got on in DC...one of his songs got in that contest and won and that's how he really first blew up around here

LOL @ around 8.50 when Just Blaze said "someone had to believe in you to invest, whether it was a label or a hustler.."

What im laughing at is just how literally everything i said in this thread is true but unfortunately some of you niggas hate to hear truth. Ive discussed that many times too. Thats where soooooo many artists get their "street cred" from. Even the ones you dont think im talking about.

Literally every thing i said in this thread and in other threads about these topics they responded in the same way. And im a guy with no entertainment business experience whatsoever.

Not all of it. Some of it is it's own market and some is in the New England market. I get your point though.

i actually blame power 105. when hot 97 first started getting crazy wack power 105 came out playing mostly just straight up hip-hip and a lot of people switched... then once they had stable numbers they just started playing the same bullshit as hot 97.
