I just came in to say this. I've been on hiatus from this website for about 6 months because I'm now a radio host in my city. And my show is called "The College Draft". I call it "The College Draft" because everyone wants to be a rapper, but the ones who are good enough to be under the industries scope are the ones who get to the draft. Like: Joey Badass, Grandemarshalle, ASAP, Sir Micheal Rocks, School Boy Q. I showcase artist in the underground circuit who bring quality music. Although I've been getting respect from people in my city for playing quality and interviewing quality artist. What the DJ said was ABSOLUTELY right. This is a business, the artist I play are "minor league" players, and its funny because I'm one of the one only ones who pushes "minor league" music more then anyone in my country nevermind city.. If you disagreed with what he said, its because you dont understand the music industry. If an artist wants to get exposure on the radio they have to create a HUGE buzz, not just the internet, they have to get the STREETS talking.

They don't play Ghostface, Styles P, etc either so are they also "minor league"

Yes they are...Ghostface and styles P was hot in the early 2000s (obv in the 90s too for niggas who wanna get technical), they had a major league buzz BACK THEN when their music caught the ear of the masses and they were signed to big labels, but now they have a minor league buzz, they still come out with quality but nobodies really checkin for em. I think you think Im trying to insult artist who are minor league but thats far from the case considering I wouldnt be a radio host if they didnt let me play 100% percent of what I want which are "minor league artist", Im just calling it how the industry calls it. minor league>>>>>major league. I'm on your side, dont get it twisted. but its the industry man.

Just because the word "minor" is in there doesnt mean less, peep the context I'm using.

By the way Ghostface is a legend and Styles P is damn near a legend IMO.

I wasn't coming at you, but the term "minor league" really bothers me. It's one thing to call Joey BadA$$ minor league, that's fine because he's new. But where the industry backs themselves into a corner is when they try to use that minor league logic on vets. I'm not expecting ATL, Houston, MIA etc radio to play that new Skyzoo, but NY has NO excuse to not play music from their own people.

I get that there is money involved but I'm not talking about that aspect of it. My gripe with local radio is that they let other areas dictate what is "hot". When NY used to dictate what is "hot", now they have some cat from Oakland telling NY that he doesn't want to play their music because they are "minor league" is kinda fucked up to me. Like I said in another thread I don't care if they play 2 chainz, Wayne etc. I understand that there is a demand for those artists, but also why can't they throw in some local artists?

So don't they think that if NY radio played NY artists that it wont eventually get national exposure?

It won't. All jokes aside, aside from you NY niggas and a few surrounding areas, nobody really wants to hear that NY sounding shit. And that's just being real.

you wrong homie, I like hearing shit from all regions and I live in the midwest, if you only listen to a certain type of music you los

Hot 97 has been the subject of some hot debate lately as the radio station continues to bypass underground artists in favor of the mainstream. On the newest episode of The Combat Jack Show, Combat Jack invited Hot 97 program director Ebro Darden to the studio to discuss the issue.

Listen to the complete, 75-minute episode below to hear some solid arguments from both sides of the dispute.

In Chicago, 107.5 does this thing called download or delete. They will play a local artist--then ask listeners to call in or text if they like the song and provide some feedback. If it gets more downloads than deletes, it will get acknowledgment and some air play.

That seems fairly democratic, tho I think that they should do it more often.

they def don't do that in NY/tristate lol

They used to do that back in the day. I vaguely remember a PM Dawn record getting shitted on, then like a month later it was #1 in the whole country.

They used to that at 103 Jamz in Hampton Roads, VA

I did radio for 2 years when I was in college. Hot 91.1 always supported local artists. I was happy to break local artists.

North Jersey is in the NYC market and South Jersey is the Philly market.

hot 97 used to do that back in 2006. but it only lasted that one year.

I'm not a fan of the "support anything just because it's from my city" argument...I'm not supporting garbage just because we share an accent and zip code...fuck that...I'll support quality regardless of region or time zone. When I had my show when I was in college for 4 years, I've spoke on this before but we had an actual list we nick named "Da Band" because it was a list of artist myself and my friends who also had hip-hop shows simply refused to play. Some were major artists (I personally had a 3 1/2 year 50 Cent ban that I was forced to remove by our station manager) and even told Bustah Rhymes to his face in '05 when he came to my school for a concert I didn't play his new shit because I personally thought it sucked. I've met plenty of big name DJ's who we all know who say the same ol "Radio is designed so you hear your favorite song once an hour" type shit, then go on to say they hate most of the music they play and it's why you may hear them play certain artist, but you'll never hear them interview them on their show. It's ridiculous that not only the same artists always get played, literally the same songs get played. Hell just Monday at work my co-workers and I literally counted the number of times we heard "Diamonds" "Clique" "Pop That" and "Bands A Make Her Dance" on the radio between 9 am and 5 pm solely listening to WPGC 95.5 we topped 10 for "Clique" before noon...that right there lets you know there's something else going on behind the scenes with alot of these major market stations that's out of the dj's hands

Radio should support local artists if they got a fan backing and or bit of a buzz. Then again the entertainment industry is a bunch of fake niggas who will shit on you when you down, but will be all on your dick like they was with you in the struggle as soon as you make that comeback or actually get on. Word to RDJ

There it is..EXACTLY everything i said was stated in those videos ^

Told you niggas. Niggas better stop being dumb and always blame everybody else but themselves. Not saying politics doesnt play in or payola has never happened but like dude said a radio programmers job title is to get RATINGS for the station cuz thats what hes hired for.
