I don't agree with it but niggas are not using common sense when it comes to radio. Radio, TV & blogs are all about ratings/views. That's how they survive thanx to all the commercials & sponsors. If an artist like Sean Price, who am i a fan of, doesn't track well with people out there (get people talking, record sales, solid-big fanbase already etc) that's gonna gurantee more ratings for the station then why should they play it?

If they played nothing but Immortal Technique music we wouldn't have these radio station at all. Maybe you dumb niggas should stop giving radio/tv/blogs so much attention and relevance by caring so much and clicking/watching/listening to them give more attention to WHAT YOU LIKE and we'll get somewhere.

i wished it worked that way homey but like someone said ... its all about "perks or payola" ... You trying to tell me that a Immortal Technique song cant generate just as much talk and traffic as a Future song ?????? via radio play ????? how much did future SELL !!!!!! lol yeah he earned his spot ... HYPE doesnt always = Success .... In kendrick lamars case it did ;) #THINK ABOUT IT ..... for FUTURE it didnt work ... but for KENDRICK it did ....... just looking @ that tells me an immortal technique has a place on radio if all they are worrying about is ratings and viewers and talk in the streets ....

imo the reason why a guy like immortal wont get play is because hes anti commercial ... you cant have a guys rapping about saving your money and rebeling against the system ... then have a commercial basically telling you the exact opposite ... SPEND YOUR MONEY !!!!!!! DONT WORRY ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT THE LOCAL STRIP JOINT IS OPEN AND TODAY IS $2 TUESDAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!! once again THINK ABOUT IT ....... the rappers you hear on the radio today are PRO COMMERCIAL .... all they talk about is SPENDING $$$$$ !!!!!!! GOING TO THE CLUB/BAR AND GETTING DRUNK !!!!!!! GETTTING HIGH ON MOLLYS !!!!!!!!! SLEEP STATE !!!!!!! ETC...........

i like diggy as an artist ... but did he earn his spot ?? or did he get the play because hes signed with Warner/Atlantic ??????? things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmm

The fuck sales got to do with what i said tho? Listen, radio plays whatever will get them ratings. Yeah Kendrick sold but prior to him releasing his album he didn't have a audience that would guarantee a radio station higher ratings. An artist like Future prolly didn't sell well however he had a hot song and he is an artist that makes music for the radio stations key demographic. Of course Immortal Tech would not bring as much traffic as Future, you seriously even questioning that? The main consumers and controllers of the rap game are mostly teenagers and they don't even wanna hear all that shit. You even see this on the internet how people hate "rapping ass niggas". You think Immortal Tech fans listens to radio as much as say Future fans or fans in the same category?

Alot of people wanna hear dance music and strip club music so of course they wouldn't wanna listen to IT (Immortal Tech) spit some knowledge or whatever, and since it doesn't dollars it doesn't sense.

Diggy? Who is Diggy marketed for? Young kids. Who listens, calls in and makes these radio stations survive? Young kids. Now, Diggy also comes from a background of a reality show so he already had somewhat of a following or ppl who were aware of him. Another fact is him being Run's son, which makes ppl at least wanna hear him out before deciding if they like him or not. Also, dude opened up and was on tour with alot of boyband groups and shit early on so once again he was already out there.

I'm not saying payola doesn't exist, but it that's the case why didn't we hear more of Kendrick or whoever on the radio then? That's bullshit homie and you know it. Like i said it's about ratings. That's how radio stations exists and survives. More listeners brings more sponsors which brings a higher revenue. Same way an award for example gives an artist a higher rate for performances/tours.

You aren't hearing more Kendrick because, either A he didn't to pay for spins or b his label situation is such that he can get a foot in the door to get spins. But I think the obvious is, Kendrick didn't need radio to break out because, of his affiliation.

with Dre etc.

You are correct in saying it's about ratings which brings in commercial advertising. But you are surely missing a step which is is payola. Payola and perks is what gets you in the door. And if, your record catches then yes it helps to drive ratings because, people are tuning in. But just cause some song is, being played in an Atl strip club doesn't mean it's hot. There is someone that says Yo I can get this on the radio for you or someone who says I am willing to drop what it takes to get on the radio.

Using let's say trinidad james as an example. His shit sounds like the rest of the crapola that's getting play so, it's not that difficult to deduce that his record would catch with radio listeners, commercial club hoppers and strip club goers.

So don't they think that if NY radio played NY artists that it wont eventually get national exposure?

It won't. All jokes aside, aside from you NY niggas and a few surrounding areas, nobody really wants to hear that NY sounding shit. And that's just being real.

You don't speak for the entire country. How do you know they don't want to hear it? If the music is good and has crossover appeal it has a chance to get played.

I disagree. Because, that's not how radio works. People are sheep and if stations are consistently playing New York shit the sheep listeners will believe the shit is hot. That's why most of these whack rappers are on right now. Radio is playing their garbage music and the people are saying well it must be hot if they are playing it. To be honest Radio in regards to Hip Hop has always been this way. This isn't a new format.

Also a thing to note is that Ebro is from Cali so of course he wouldn't care about giving NY rappers spins.

Did you read the entire post? The last point you made is something i already mentioned. Trinidad James caters to the radio stations main demographic, so of course they'd play that before Kendrick. It's like saying how come Lil' B's antics and troll shit get more views than before when he actually was a serious rapper? It's simple. Again, i already said i'm not saying there aren't payola but that's just ignorant to believe in the case you described. So you mean to tell me 90% of the rest of the artist aren't paying for radio breaks or have a similar situation to Kendrick? LMAO that doesn't even sound right. No, that's the radio programmers job. A radio programmer is hired to play whatever they think will generate more ratings, since that's their job duty. So in this time and era where music is almost all about the strip clubs, has the people locally moving and grooving, has an audience or a song that matches the stations demographic why would a hot song that Trinidad has not get played versus Kendrick Lamar's?

Perks and business definitely has a part in certian situations but not in all. Power 105 just said they fronted on 2Chainz a few years ago. Why are they fucking with him now? Cuz he's hot, has an audience, is signed to a major label, has songs that fits with what's going on at the moment and etc. Even in the earl 90's, the minute The Chronic and Doggystyle was out you started to hear alot of songs with a similar G-Funk sound on the radio. Why? Because that was what the current demographic and consumers were in to and were interested in. Not because they just paid to get play. If it was that easy everybody would be doing it. Diggy got looong money, got heavy connects and is signed to Atlantic, you think he wouldn't pay his ass off to get played 10 times a day if he could?

I believe that shyt should be given a shot, just see what the response is like.....Shyt flex should give cats a shot....but @ the same time these rappers know what hot 97 plays...maybe they should adjust their sound to that......unless you're an established rapper, you're not going to be able stick to what u do.....simple math party/trap beat, simple lyrics lead to radio play

Good point. But here's the rub. Anyone who says they ride for Hip Hop should never want to back artists into a corner where they are doing what everyone else is doing. Unfortunately that's where we are now.

Those underground types would have to get played on like community stations. Its underground. Far as the big stations, they tryin to get all the money they can the easiest and cheapest way possible. That means play the top most popular hits. If somebody tried to play stuff on that format people arent really tryin to hear, they will get moved to the side and someone they can make money with will be brought in.

Even out here in the Atl area, they play like blocks of 80s-90s rap during like lunch time. Just like a few weeks ago they was playin Special ed, Chubb rock etc. on one of the biggest stations in the South.

The way i look at it is, a radio station shouldn't have to give a artist buzz, a artist buzz has to be organic and then the radio should pick up on that buzz. As far as force feeding some of these boring ass underground artist to the mainstream, if you can't create a natural buzz (like Kendrick, Frank Ocean, etc), then what makes these dudes think radio can help them.

You don't need radio to blow up nowadays, radio is almost dead. You have examples of dudes making it out here without initial hits (Kendrick, J Cole, Mackelmore,Mac Miller, Frank Ocean) and selling 100's of thousands of records.

Only the lazy and broke rappers complain about radio play. Create ur own buzz, radio could only do this much..... Every radio station has an "2hrs underground" segment
