rapmastermind;3675887 said:I was very sadden to hear this news, after the shock of the death of Philly Legend Joe Frazier, then I get hit with this. Sad Day For Hip Hop. Let me school some of you youngin's on the Overweight Lover. 1st and foremost, it very clear that Biggie owes something to Heavy D. As Well as Fat Joe, Big Pun and Rick Ross. Heavy D along with the Fat Boys were the 1st to really make it cool to be fat and rap. But unlike the Fat Boys, Heavy D was able to break down commercial barriers. What people need to understand is Heavy D and the Boyz had 3 Platinum and 2 Gold albums. They have sold over 5 Million worldwide, so Heavy moved some units coming from the 80's.
Heavy D was also a producer as someone mentioned. He was the excutive Producer of the 90's Classic Soul IV Real album "Candy Rain" as well as "Summer Rain" from Carl Thomas, "I can feel it in the air" by Beans and of course "Guns and Roses" by Jay Z. For all you 90's babies having to google Heavy, make sure you look hard and research the fact Heavy was very instrumental in Puffy. You See, Puffy is given the Credit for the fusion of RnB/Hip Hop with his success with Mary J and Jodeci. I'd argue that Puffy took a page from Heavy D as it was Heavy that was doing RnB style hip hop in the 80's and early 90's. The same way some would call Drake's music "Soft", Heavy got the same criticism for making songs from the ladies that had RnB Flavor. Heavy D is also one of the few rappers to do a song with Biggie and Tupac as well as Michael and Janet Jackson. R.I.P., he is a true Hip Hop Legend. He wasn't the greatest lyricist but his contribution to the art form can't be overlooked. Before Biggie became Big Poppa, there was the Overweight Lover Heavy D. Biggie stated many times that Heavy was one of his biggest influences. Though Biggie is a very unique emcee in Hip Hop History, it was clear he studied Heavy D. Biggie would forever immortalize Heavy D in the Opening bars to arguable the greatest Rap Song of all time. Hope you in the limousine with Biggie up there Heavy, R.I.P.
