Young ma wasn't signed when she made that video. honestly I'm not even sure she signed now. Alot of indie artist videos don't look amateurish, such as oddisee, reks, etc

Shit I'm even sure baby fans watch videos like that anymore. Tv channels rarely play them now like they used to

Yeah but if you go on Youtube Young M.A. has at least 10 videos and they all look like they were homemade. I respect her grind and her hustle but with all the money she waves around in her videos it wouldn't hurt to hire a professional videographer and make a video like that Bone Crusher video I posted.

That's my point. Everybody says that indie>>>major, but the majors can make videos that look infinitely better than an independent video.

And you're right, BET and MTV don't show videos like they used to. But it might be because independent artists are flooding them with amateur looking videos.

And its not just Young M.A. You could go on The Reason and look at all the videos posted in the past week. Most of them look like they could have been made by an amateur with a $3,000 camera and basic video editing equipment.

That Bone Crusher video I posted isn't something that an amateur could do.

high production big budget music videos are obsolete now and dont matter at all because nobody cares about music videos like they did before

Maybe nobody cares about music videos anymore because 95% of them look low budget.

An independent can hire a professional who use a digital camera and not film to make a video that cheaper. Fight club for example by the Migos was made by an independent company.

But thats not what they do. They get one of their homies to shoot the video and 9 times out of 10 it looks low budget.

I took a few video classes and there's a lot that goes into lighting, color, make up, set design, costume design, etc. that makes the difference between a low budget video and a high budget video.

In particular, the videographer needs to know what colors the rapper will be wearing in the video and design the set accordingly. Thats part of the reason that Bone Crusher video looks so good, because they're wearing bright colors.

No it's moreso they don't need to be big budget because it's not necessary to get an artist out there so why spend the money?

And I graduated with a concentration in Television and Radio. I have friends that have film companys. And alot of the rappers out here, who are independent hire professional to shoot their videos. Even major artists hire the same people. Example Jordan Towers.

I might be the only person on the IC that remembers the early 80s so let me try to explain something.

In the early 80s people felt the same way. They felt that a basic, simple video was good enough to give to MTV or BET and the song itself would sell the song.

But Michael Jackson had a different outlook. He figured that if you make the biggest budget video that money could afford then he would blow away the competition. Michael Jackson's videos were so much better that he put everybody else to shame. He made everybody step their video game up. He set the bar. I guess the new generation is too young to remember the difference between Michael Jackson videos and everybody else's.

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

Beat It - Michael Jackson

Compare those two videos to, well, The Message and Planet Rock. Michael Jackson's videos were above and beyond what everybody else was doing. All 4 videos came out around the same time.

The Message = Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5

Planet Rock - Afrika Bambaattaa and the Soul Sonic Force

As much as I love Hip Hop I can't deny that Michael Jackson's videos were miles ahead of what anybody else was doing at the time. There's really no comparison.

no one has a budget for huge videos is hip hop anymore. plus the means to record/edit/release a video has become much easier

That's kinda my point. Everybody went indie because you can record an album on your computer in your bedroom, so why sign to a major label?

The answer is that a major label can produce a video like that Bone Crusher video I posted in my O/P.

I can't even think of the last video in all of music to have people buzzing. Hotline bling? Formation by Beyoncé? Music videos are not important anymore

@ the bolded. So you're qualified to speak on the subject.

How much would it cost to make that Bone Crusher video I posted in My O/P and how much would it cost to shoot the Young M.A. video in my O/P?

If you have a green screen or some great locations and the latest in editing technology and the know how. You can make a low budget video look high quality.

Beyonce and Jay Z still make big budget videos. But they have big budgets. But you can tell the difference when you watch them.

50 years from now those videos will still be on Youtube. And 50 years from now people will wonder why people were making low budget videos.

So how much are we talking?

At least $25K for the Bone Crusher video. Look at the clothes they were wearing. That's at least $10k in clothes alone. To rent the set, hire the lighting people, make up, and to hire somebody to do the editing will cost another 15K.

That Young M.A. video looks like you could do it for under $1K
