The way I see it, he and/or his agent realize that he's 31 and this might be his final time to land a big time contract; he'll be damn near 40 by the time this conract expires. So, Boras and Werth swung for the fences (literally) and found a taker (sucker) in the Nationals.

Yeah, he sold his soul to get his payday now, but like someone else already mentioned in this thread: he'll probably never see the playoffs again.

Trust me, when those Ls start rolling in year after year, he might end up opting out of this contract in the final year or two.

Yankees and Red Sox were interested in Werth, but he goes to the Nationals? It's all about the money.

Carl Crawford is the real premiere position player free agent this year anyway.

co-sign this...they bout to do what the rays did...add all this cheap talent thru high 1st round picks in the draft then spend some money on key free agents and they will make a wild card berth in like 3 yrs

That's assuming that Strasburg's Tommy John surgery went well. You won't know how the surgery went until he starts his rehab assigments. Some pitchers come back just as well or better than before (i.e., Tim Hudson) or he might be a shell of his former self (i.e., Kerry Wood). Either way, Strasburg's not pitching until 2012.

On Opening Day 2010, I thought the Nats had a decent team on paper. But by the end of June, you knew they were headed for their familiar place at the bottom of the NL East standings.

If they make some decent moves in the next 2 or 3 yrs, they might make the playoffs at least once like u said. But Werth's contract is gonna be a killer when it comes to them being able to add any significant peices to their line-up over time.

Diaz is a very decent bench player. I guess he could platoon with D. Brown and/or B. Francisco or whomever they place in Werth's RF spot. The Phils are still gonna miss Werth's power, though. Besides all of that, the Phils are supposedly trying to trade Ibanez. Guess they're trying to get younger, shed a little payroll and stay in contention at the same time.

And kerry wood had the Woat mechanics after his tommy john surgery he pitched well but kept havin shoulder injuries because of his horrible throwing technique that he refused to change until he realized his career would be over unless he did
