Nobody is making what they did greater than what's being done now. Of course the old school would have a lot classics by opinion because their albums had more time to stand the test of time. Also, those albums had more impact than a lot of stuff today. But like i said, the rappers we are fans of today were STANS of the rappers from their era. Nas wrote a song for Rakim, that shows love for a rapper he grew up on. Nas made a remake of a song by Slick Rick. That's no different than Elzhi & Fashawn remaking Illmatic to pay homage today.

As far as rappers from yesterday getting more credit than today, that's not true and that's why some of those rappers lash out in interviews. Lil Wayne has a lot of fans and sold a milli in 2 weeks, how many of those fans do you think know who KRS 1 is? That's what Nas was talking about "Carry On Tradition" from HHID. Cats don't even know who the rappers are that started all of this shit, and they don't care to know. Jeezy didn't even know Monie Love was a rapper when she was defending Nas on that famous radio interview. Ludacris said on MVP that he was "the first southern rapper on a primo beat" but Scarface rapped with Gangstarr on "Betrayal' 10 years earlier. Lupe wasn't even familiar with ATCQs catalog but decided to do a tribute to them. Fans and rappers don't give a lot of credit to rappers, because they don't know their accomplishments.

I think their is a huge disconnect between fans and the history of hip hop music. Hotstylz was looked at by old heads as wack for their song "Lookin Ass Nigga" but said nothing in the 90s when Pharcyde did "Ya Mama" back in the day. Both songs were basically niggaz playing the dozens with each other. Likewise, a lot of fans of Hotstylz may not even own nor know of the Pharcyde or Bizzarre Ryde II The Pharcyde. So basically audiences of certain fans gives credits to their favorites and flat out ignore other artists. I think too many people are stans of certain rappers and not fans of the genre & culture.

I respect your post and opinion bruh..

You couldn't be more wrong. You're suggested that these niggas just popped up and people just started blessing them with accolades. That's not how it worked homie. I am not disrespecting either but you just had to be there. We would argue for hours on end who was nicer. Kane, Ra, G, or Krs. They were different yet the same in so many ways one cannot even explain in detail.

For instance. KRS was one of first MC's to don guns on his Album and spit Raw on LP

Kane came with the more up tempo Flow, mixed with knowledge while incorporating the Ladies

Slick Rick Came with the Stories, Expensive Suits, Gucci Jewels etc.

Rakim, came with the Quiet killer, Lyrical, and intricate rhyme patterns and brokered the first MILLION DOLLAR deal.

I could go on and on. The point is, the artists get the CREDIT THEY DESERVE because they worked for it. In the studio, on tours, in the board rooms and fashion industry. They aren't revered the way they are for nothing and that's what you are implying.

I hear you there... Im not taking away from nothing they've done and best believe they earned their names in hip hop history... but where is the respect for the niggas making history today and have been for the last decade and a half... ? Where is there respect as MC's, cuz you niggas sure do bash all of them niggas for no damn reason... most yall dont like hip hop on the IC, yall just like to bytch about hip hop... thats where I'm getting at

Indeed most fans are just fans of some artist and not the Culture. I enjoy going back and reading what happened in the early days more then listening to the Music knowadays. I got into Hip Hop in like 1981. I started out Break Dancing and trying to write my name in Graf. Growing up BK when the older heads was throwing block parties and killing in the park. With that said. Hip Hop by 1981 was already full swing in the Bronx. Some even date the shit back as early as 73. So, I was even late by most standards. But damn I was intrigued to learn about the beginings and how cats were getting in before my ass could even walk. It's all about a person involvement. If, a person is just fan then be that and not worry about why, this and why that. Otherwise, we get these silly threads.

What's more horrifying is, these dudes are just shrinking Hip Hop down to a few rappers. So, getting into the DJ's, Graf artists and B-BOYS who had SERIOUS IMPACT AND HAND in giving Hip Hop to the world is, even more pointless.

You are arguing the inarguable though fam. It's your opinion and guess what? You are entitled to it. And I can promise you no one from the reason will show up at your door with the cops or guns ablazing because, of it. It's not that serious. Just enjoy the artists you like and not worry about things you cannot change. Like the accolades that Hip Hop legends, founders, Pioneers, innovators and inventors enjoyed 30 years ago or today.

You are making sweeping statements though. Who's yall bitching?

But I will admit for myself. Being involved in Hip Hop for as long as I have I am hard to impress. Simply because, I don't see anyone doing what hasn't already been done. Whether on a Minor or Major level. I don't give extra points because, an artists has more exposure and larger fan base. It's about creativity, being innovative, and unique Musically. I just don't get the feel from most current artists that they care to be innovators. Many are just clones, Sons and Daughters of past artists.

Okay this is what I don't understand about this response. If you have something from Cam that puts Pun to shame I say put it out there. This is a debate about the validity of Big Pun being garbage (which in my opinion is woefully mis-stated) and Cam being better (which I feel he isn't). To be honest I want to see you put some of Cam's best work (in your opinion) up here so I can compare it. I give respect to rappers no matter who they are for there lyrical content. But the point was presented that Pun wasn't a machine when it came to this rap shit....and I presented proof that was a lie. Cam got flows, I will give him credit, but when you put him up against a lyrical juggernaut like Pun who, with only 2 albums was placed in the upper echelons of rap...really nothing more need be said. Hell set the criteria for review: is it commercial success, wordplay, battle rhymes, whatever...I can almost guarantee that you put it up for debate...and majority will side with Pun. Sorry but that dude was just a f****** problem.

But good read though,

So this has been about your LOVE FOR JAYZ the entire time? LMAO!! You could have just said, I Love Jayz unconditionally, he is the greatest, I bow to him and praise him with all my heart. Why did you take the long route?

And again it's not just you. This is the problem with Hip Hop. To many fans of individual artists and not the History, Craft and work put in. This doesn't just encompass the area of MCing but Graf, B-Boying and DJing.

Cosign. There is more than music to Hip Hop, but keeping it strictly on music the fans' knowledge is extremely limited. To quote you Kwan Dai "these cats are hip hop bystanders". They don't go to the graffiti artists exhibits or breakdancing/DJ shows. A lot of these "fans" don't even buy albums. They like what the radio plays and that's good enough to them, but that's only scratching the surface. I'm only 25 and i'm still studying hip hop from the 80s which way before my time. I was fortunate to have gotten into hip hop music and culture early. My uncle was a DJ, i knew some graffiti artists, and i collect albums. I have most of cd collection on view in "official CD collection" thread.

Great Post

To comment on your last paragraph, I'm gonna keep it real and as somewhat of a older head i think maybe we should get some of the blame. I think maybe we need to remind a lot of these young cats to embrace hip-hop as a whole. Not just rappers themselves but embrace the culture. Remind them hip-hop is way of life. That is how i grew up. My brother was\is a DJ and he made it his responsibility to school me on the old school hip hop. By old school i don't mean Kool G rap and Rakim. I mean Mantronix, Busy Bee,T La Rock, and Master Of Ceremonies. I'm doin that with my daughter right now. I know i'm on the right track with her because she came up to me the other day and asked me to play "The World is Yours" the other day. It was a proud daddy moment. Hip hop as a whole is not that old and most of our legends are still alive and doin it. Embrace them now before its to late.

I disagree that older heads bare blame. As you stated there are many older artists still out here doing it. As well as, artist that encourage the fans to seek out the History. Whether we all agree with the Album or not. NAS damn dedicating a whole album to the subject. KRS speaks often and maybe to much at times on the subject. LOL.... Bambaata is, alive and Speaking. Biz Markie, Jazzie Jeff and Grand Master Flash are still spinning. The individual has to want it. I remember the whole diggin in the crates movement. Which, started with Herc and Bam but to stay on topic. Hip Hop was about finding the MOST UNIQUE and CREATIVE sounds. Now it's about finding the next big star for product placement and movie deals.

I have no problem with you disagreeing. I just put it out there for discussion. I am in full agreement with the end of your post. One of the saddest things i see these days is people calling themselves mc's or rappers but are terrible at their craft or don't know their history. I truly hope one day it can get back to emcees being able to spit is prerequisite for the job.
