If Ice Cube was from New York would he be considered better than Jay Z?

based on hoe card pulls alone cube crushes him in a landslide.

You serious ? Cube got knocked out/had his chain snatched by Solo (Cypress Hill showed it off in The Source) and Common performed 'Bitch In You' at the HOB, more importantly -- both happen in LA. Pac even called out Cube for attempting to ride his wave w/ the Westside Connection movement but nothing ever materialized before he died. Speaking of the WSC ho card/image, it's well known Mack 10 was kidnapped/held ransom before & also, basically extorted by the same set he claim. Anyhow, Cube definitely a legend but I notice ppl become revisionist and overhype cats when they fade out; the LL Cool J comparison was probably the best one.

Known fact. Ice Cube >>> Jay-Z, if you disagree can't take your opinion serious. Cube got 3 straight classics. Jay is the most politically correct cock sucker hip hop has ever seen.. Cube gave no fucks. It's disrespectful to Cube to be even mentioned in the same sentence as that water camel.

Plus Cube never had someone like Beyonce to help him become more popular

Jay was already star while Beyoncé was on the come up.

What are we using to quantify "better than"? Are talking about discography because that alone is a matter of personal preference & opinion. IMO coast doesn't play a part because good music transcends boundaries. Any nigguh fronting on dope music just because it came from a different area is a dumbass anyway. I grew up listening to both, but I would rather listen to Jay than Cube. Both have dope shit. If we're talking about overall impact on the hip hop culture then there is no question that Jay >>> Cube. Numbers don't lie. Relevance doesn't lie. I haven't equated Cube w/ music in a very long time.....only movies. I equate Jay w/ everything from music to movies to sports to clothing to jewelry to vehicles to alcohol..etc..etc.

I cant get wit the bolded. More impact that Cube in hip hop culture? How is that When NWA opened up so manydoors for rappers to come out and cuss, talk greasy about cops which just about everybody do now(it didnt start with 99 problems), kicked down the movie doors with will smith and LL...if it wasnt for Cube it probably wouldnt be no jay z out there able to do what he does.

One of the big differences between these two btw to me is Cube always spoke out when it comes to the West. When New York wasnt playing Westside connect when WSCG was the hottest group out with the number one album, Cube gave no fucks and dissed new yorks dj`s relentlessly! Jay didnt step up when Snoop was kicking over the NY buildings and Pac was yelling "Fuck Jay Z!!" Cube the more battle tested Rapper with the most heart and guts outta the two.

Niggas act like Jay be on that entrepreneur shit he ain't the first rapper to have his own record label neither clothing line he ain't the first rapper to have a sport agency he ain't the first to do none of this shit if it wasn't for Dame Camron Puff and Master P jay would've been another washed up rapper

Even tho he got his chain snatched but he did throw hands against Suge Knight backstage in the early 90s

Since u into the technical aspects of rap like entrendres, metaphors, punchlines, word play, similies i thought u would be a big fan of Jay Z as that's what Jay Z is all about and isn't an emotional rapper what u like to call 'emo'

He just rhymes for the sake of it alot and puts a lotta emphasis on Flow which u prefer and he has a fast Flow alotta times which u like as well

I'm guessing you heard this from a vague Premier interview but regardless of how accurate, neither Suge or Cube were seen (by the people they emulated) how the industry presented them. Actually, some say it's no sense in filming the NWA documentary because we've seen CB4 already haha. It's funny though because you always hear 'rappers these days fake or this/that, etc.' but it's nothing new, a lot were just lucky to come up in a different era. While it's true that NWA & plenty of other artist opened up doors, that doesn't mean they're the best by default - but if you want to say innovators, that's not disputable. As I said before, Cube is a legend but a lot of his career is a contradiction (that Common/Cypress Hill/Kam & Solo/2Pac addressed) & it's arguable that most of the people saying he's better than Jay & Nas are saying it based on image/past accolades. If I'm wrong, people should be able to name 10 classic songs or verses Cube made since 1997 ?

I am a fan of that stuff and thats what makes Jay good but thats not all that lyricism is. I have no problem with Jay as a lyricist, But if you as tight as he is, where is the heart and guts of a goat mc When challenged? Why dont a guy that sick speak up when a guy call him out, when a guy shits on New York, when his lyricist friend Biggie gettin pressed up? I got a problem with this mans rap intangibles, not his skill. I got so much respect for his wordplay that i get pissed off that he dont use it more and he be on some dumb shit now.

All I was saying originally was ice cube has stood up alot when Jay only stood up to Mobb Deep when they was on the decline. Come on, dude has ducked everybody from Beans to game, to wayne with all that sick wordplay

I do agree about Cube being more of a stand up dude that i co sign

So, basically like I thought - this not about who's the better rapper but just biasness/revisionism based on perceived image.

who is better? its all opinion but with that said im gonna go with jay. im from jersey and u know what maybe its a lil east coast bias there. still im an old head and i can remember calling my cousin in cali and listening to the nwa over the phone. we would send each other cassette tapes thru the mail. along with too short nwa and ice cube are probably the first artist outside of the east coast that i thought was hot to deaf. too short cuz the nigga just said whatever and nwa and cube because when i would visualize his music it was like a whole new world. i was like damn them cali niggas living crazy. clearly cube impact on hip hop will live on forever. dude is a true legend. jay is as well. im not mad at which one u pick. i prefer jay though

AmerikkKaz Most Wanted, Death Certificate, Lethal Injection, The Preditor, Kill At Will>>>>>>>>>Jay Z's best album

Ice Cube is better in every department besides Flow

Ice Cube is a far superior artist

Would Jordan have been a better player than John Starks if he played in ny?

Would Floyd have been a better fighter than Zab Juddah if he was from ny?

Would Peyton have been better than Eli if he played in ny?

.............yeah thats how fucking ridiculous t/s's question is

Opinions about music'll always vary so I won't even address the album comment but I actually think Cube's flow/delivery (at the time) was probably one of his best assets. Cube also rapped about things of substance occasionally but in my opinion, it sounded like he was imitating the environment/ppl he came across but there's no real identity or depth in his music. I may be bias in the sense that I prefer personal account in comparison to the 'reporter' angle a lot of rappers give. If you take artist like Scarface for instance, he may be considered 'gangsta rap' but there's dynamics in his music and you hear Brad Jordan in it as well; whereas with Cube, in my eyes - it's as if he always in character because it's nothing personal in his music, he's one dimensional in his approach. Even if you take artists like Nas or Pac, they may have used other people's experiences or told other people's stories but you can hear an identity in their music (more recently for Nas, as far as being personal). I won't even go through Jay's whole catalogue but just a few tracks like 'Can I Live', 'Regrets', 'You Must Love Me', or 'Lucky Me' were more introspective or gave more of a glimpse into who he is than anything Cube released.

That being said, I'm from LA & listened to Cube growing up but I'd be pressed to think of 10 quotes that'd make me consider him more lyrical than Jay - so maybe you or the ppl who say Cube is the better artist can give real examples instead of vague statements ?
