How Magna Carta Holy Grail really grew on me and what it says about Jay's current status

Expectations for Kanye are different than the expectations for a Eminen or a Jay-Z. Kanye is a beatmaker at heart who tries to rap. We don't expect lyrical excellence from Kanye. But he has made hot albums. Yeezus is ass tho. Jay-Z on the other hand, don't niggas call him Hova, which is short for Jehovah? If any other nigga was to drop MCHG, that shit would still be wack. It maybe even wacker.

I'll admit that Em used to be a better rapper from a technical standpoint. He had the flow, delivery, etc. but he did NOT have the lyrics. Renegade is the closest that anything he has made has ever came to being a classic. Now he doesn't have the technical skill OR the lyrics.

The album was dope got major play. Shit was better then majority of everything released.

an would yall stop trolling the doo doo an poop words yall grown ass men talking about poop an doo doo wtf.

N/H

That's a matter of opinion. Someone might call Lil Wayne the best rapper alive and say Wu Tang is wack. Doesn't make them right, doesn't necessarily make them wrong either. Obviously many people would disagree but it still wouldn't make their opinion wrong.

Difference between being a fan and a stan. An Objective fan will admit to wack albums/songs and point out flaws in his favorite artist work which I do all the time.. A stan thinks all of his favorite artist work is great with no flaws.

That's a bullshit definition of a stan...ShadyTeam will tell u she thinks relapse is Wack and she is the ultimate stan

She does that cause she knows I like it. She has ulterior motives on this site.

I don't like this new Jay. MCHG was his attempt at making white people friendly/ hipster friendly hip hop. I understand it but it just ain't my cup of tea.

She also a troll

I'm a little concerned OP got 9 goats. Album is not deep enough to speak on it in those terms. And I hate when mfers wax poetic months later on some shyt regular people understood in days.

And I mean I enjoy the album but....

Compare songs like Black Album's "Threat" with its bars dedicated to venomously describing various forms of assault and murder to "somwhereinamerica" which comes off as a collection of esoteric pop culture savvy tweets; 140 characters of easily digestible soundbytes that are mostly substanceless, but goddamn are they catchy (TWERK MILEY MILEY TWERK).

Tha fuk are u talkin bout??

lol what?

Music that his target audience will like. Jay knows what he's doing.

I been saying similar shit since the album came out and niggas tell me I'm bugging. God forbid an artist actually want to grow and focus on different shit.

Seems VERY clear to me that Jay is less focused on wordplay and more focused on the overall theme of each record and the album as a whole.

MCHG was nowhere near as bad as some people say it is. I was talking to somebody about this album last week and they didn't like it because they said Jay is bragging too much on it. I asked them "What's the difference between Jay bragging about being on a yacht with a bad bitch on RD or Vol 1 vs. now except that we know for a fact he's actually on a yacht with a bad bitch on is arm?' and they couldn't answer it lol.

I think part of why so many feel like Jay fell off is because hip hop is so rooted in the struggle aspect of life and as a society in general we tend to think having money means you no longer struggle with anything period in life makes people want Jay to stop rapping because we think "Ok you're rich. Why are you still telling us about things that bother you. You have money. Stop complaining"

Co-sign...ppl don't like to hear it cuz its a undercover form of hate but there's a reason why the most disliked rappers are also the most successful and the most praised ones are the less successful ones and it isn't just becuz "they're making the best music" it's more becuz you can more relate to them and their music so it seems better but when their life and music becomes unrelateable to you then it's taken as worse that's why every rapper is started out loved until they blow up major then they end up being hated most by the same ppl who use to love them.

so what songs on MCHG are examples of white people friendly/hipster friendly hip hop? beach is better? heaven? FUTW? somewhere in america? jay-z blue? oceans? fuckwithme....? crown? on the run? picaso baby?

the only song that was "white people/hipster friendly", whatever that means, was holy grail. easily the worst song on the album, but it was just one song

Yeah those are the group of fans that tend to say "i wish a rapper would go back to rapping like their first album" or "rapping like before they blew up'. I understand that mindset but I also don't agree with it because I don't feel the need to relate to something to enjoy it. Of course I enjoy music I can relate to, but just because I can't personally relate to something doesn't mean it's automatically wack either. Some people need to learn the difference between simply not liking something vs it being wack. There's plenty of songs I can admit are good songs and I can see why people like them, I just personally don't.
