I'm reading this thread and watching PTI and I just dont get the backlash...

since when was saying how you feel a bad thing?

I don't really have a problem with what he said at 17(still ignorant though). My thing is, in the ESPN interview with him and Jimmy King, at the beginning of the interview he talks about how he was young and wrong for saying it and that he doesn't think like that anymore. Then later on in the interview him and Jimmy are trying to justify some of the "Uncle Tom" comment by shifting it on to how and who Duke recruits.

Just say you was young, dumb, and wrong for the comment. No need to explain why you said it and no need to talk about what typ of players Duke or any other schools recruit.

Jalen gave his opinion of how he felt at the time I wouldnt apologize if thats how i felt. I think grant kinda played himself aside from the last line. I mean Jalen basically said he was salty because grant had everything as a kid and he aint have shit. i was talking about this with my brother earlier and we said the same thing...Uncle Tom was the wrong word to use but he used it in the same context alot of people use the term in...not the dictionary definition

Jalen's main point was right about Duke picking specific type of players but should simply swallow his pride and admit wrong calling those black players 'Uncle Toms' and questioning their blackness. Its the usual middleclass black vs ghetto black argument.

My 2 cents: I hate Duke. Hell i made the Jalen Rose thread partly b/c I agree w/ him

BUT

I made a point to point out 'uncle tom' in early 1990s was in the middle of Jungle Fever, Do the Right Thing, Rodney King, etc.

It wasnt out the norm for 'us' to say stuff like that...shyt was different!

But bottom line Jalen cant say what he wanted to say b/c of his position, so his 'backtrack' made it all worse.

IMO, what he wanted to say was Duke recruited corny, timid, 'black guy in the white frat' type black guys.

Doesnt make them racist, thats just what it was. There are exceptions, but that is the norm.

The term 'uncle tom' is where he went wrong...they just cornballs, thats all.

the neighborhood of Georgetown in general doesn't represent DC...Georgetown is it's own little world in Northwest DC...hell for people who live here we actually take the time to say "I'm going into Georgetown" like it's actually outside the city as opposed to any other part of DC it's just "I'm headed into the city"
