Everyone is complaining about the hooks, to me, he was showing the lyricism off rather than a catchy ass hook. When people drop songs, the first thing that you catch is the hook and that's the first thing that sticks. I don't think he wanted that, he wanted the listener to hear his crazy ass multis, syllables and shit.
As for the beats, he obviously went out on a limb and did something totally different than he would usually do.
It's a good move IMO.
Thats always been his M.O. People who like albums for production and catchy hooks wont like Em, he dont make music for you. Thats what your Currency's and Jeezy's are for.

Thank you Masta Killa
Em on Recovery (im assuming he may have done the same on this record for some tracks)

"One of the things that was cool for me about that record was getting beats that already had choruses on them. It's kind of like a challenge to myself to be able to hear somebody else's hook and kind of interpret the words. Because my own hooks, I already know what I mean when I write them.
The way that I do music is, like, regardless of what the beat is and whatever kind of appeal it may or may not have, I always want to try to go as hard lyrically as I can. So regardless if the beat feels like, 'Wow maybe this could be played on the radio,' I'm not like, 'Maybe radio would play this so I'll just wing it.' Like, I always have looked at it like I want to approach every record from an emcee's aspect."
