Do You Really Think Hip Hop Has Really Gone To Sh*t, Or Are We Just Repeating Our Fathers???

I've said this before: the main problem with Hip-Hop is the lack of BALANCE.

Balance that artists from every region don't get play, instead it mostly being the South and East.

Balance that all sub-genres don't get spins, all we hear is swag rap, and trap rap now, instead of lyrical, conscious, and party rap to go along with the gangsta shit.

Balance that the sounds we hear aren't in an equal ratio: New York's classic Boom-Bap sound is barely spun in NY, and almost every new "hit" has that trap beat feel to it.

Most of us that are older don't hate what hip-hop is, most of us just want to see that balance resurface on the mainstream. I mean, we could all just go back underground for all this shit, but if people are going to broadcast the culture, then why not try to make sure it's broadcasted in the best light.

But that's my thing anytime these threads are made people say turn off your radio when my radio been turn off. Who are these so called underground acts from "this generation" thats keeping it going besides the obvious krit, cole, kendrick, and nipsey? I need names put this 90s old head onto something new or refreshing, provide evidence to support your argument.

Theres a reason these threads are constantly being made cause 90s heads like myself was spoiled with good music from all regions "not just hiphop", even some of our one hit wonders were classic. Back then I ......nevamind

You say balance "resurface", but when was it ever around like that? Cuz in ppl literally complained just as much about it in the 90's yet ironically that is now apart of the golden era? Funny..

Ppl complained about rappers selling out, mainstream rap, anything over gold was selling out, everybody followed trend back then too & nagged about rappers going for the thugged out lane just like ppl complain about the strip club music now & so on. I mean ppl disliked any popular rap act back then too, from Death Row to Biggie & all the other popular rappers..

So nothing has really changed, ppl just think it has, especially younger kids who really cant even remember the 90s but all their info comes from forums, videos & re-written history.

If you can honestly still say that Hip Hop has gone to shit bullshit in 2014, it's obvious that you aren't looking in the right places for music... and if you want more music from the artists who you say made "great/real" hip hop, support them by buying their albums...

If you have time to complain about something, you can use that same time to fix your problem that your complaining about

The mainstream is terrible and the culture is constantly being scapegoated and misrepresented.

There's good shit in abundance.

lol so j-cole/Kendrick Lamar is underground... there is consistently @least 1-2 lyrical mc's out @ a time.. niggas always act like hip hop has 2 be one way... that aint the case..

I don't know about gone to shit but if anyone thinks the music being made now is anywhere close quality wise to the music being made in the 90's early 2000's they're lying to themselves. People say "you're just old" but that's a specious argument and an easy way to skirt the issue. Listen to the lyricism, the content, the creativity and don't just rely on tropes like 'our parents said the same thing about our music'. Take the music, bar for bar, song for song, album for album and you'll see the disparity.

This........

Name me one new emcee out today that's in the same class as Nas who was a commercial superstar back in the day. Shit, we don't even have to go that high, name me a couple of emcees out that are as good as JayZ before ether, or Tupac when he was on his shit, DMX or Wu-Tang or Biggie etc.

Yes, Hip-Hop has "gone to shit." We have no one in the spotlight that comes close to the emcees I just named, and that was just the 90's. If we go back to the 80's, then everything looks suspect.

... J.Cole, Lamar, Drake, Nicki, Kanye, Rick Ross etc. aren't even in the same tier level. And even if we go underground, it's still lacking. The only ones truly killing the underground scenes are vets from the 90's and 80's. It's like these new artists and fairweather fans expect the real fans to drastically lower their standards and forget that Nas and them existed. Nah bruh, if you're not up to the par, then you get treated like it. Until we get some emcees that are actually on the same wavelength as the emcees in the past decades, fans have the right to constructively criticize.

P.S. Mid 20's here, and according to the stations, music is marketing towards 18 to 35.

Shut up.

The 90 is not the past imo. Its just 20 years ago. Our parents didnt understand Hiphop cause it was mainstream wise BRAND NEW.

Now we are in 2014 and we have something to compare.

Its not an age and generation thing. Our sons will dance to Thriller and Bob Marley and listening to Mozart and Guns and Roses. They will bump OUTKAST's Aquemini like my lil sisters are doing.

I was in my 20s during the 2000s.

The only bad thing is that hiphop is pratically one dimensional. You have to dig far to find BALANCE AND ORIGINALITY. Damn how come French Montana can have a record deal?

Hiphop nowadays , as rock and pop , is Generic.

Welcome to the fast food music era.

The music is really getting worse, its not just perception... The culture tho? I mean its not dead, but its certainly not cohesive, vibrant, or thriving... If you didnt literally grow up with it, you probably have no connection

These little kids dont even go outside let alone grafting, break dancing. or ciphering

It's funny when ppl say that rap/hiphop has fallen off and they talk about the good ole days. It's not like niggas back then had the most complicated rhyme schemes. If you like lyrics then this prolly one of the best eras in awhile. Me personally I think it is what it is. It's not like the 80's and 90's didn't have wack artist. Just because an artist came from that "golden era" don't make them a legend. Sometimes it just makes them a wack o.g.

When I think about this, I always question who will be considered GOATs in 20 years. What names from this generation could seriously be added to the Jays, Bigs, Nas', Ems, Pacs, etc.?? No doubt there are good artists now, but it's difficult to experience 90s era rap greatness and compare it to rap we have now. Outside of Kanye, who has offered consistently great music? Kendrick, Krit, and a couple others may eventually get there but thus far, I think you could say the 90's spoiled rap fans. Another thing is that radio has become extremely formulaic in what it plays and who is given a chance to shine

Right. besides Em and Ye and Lupe ,the 2000's has not given us 5 giants to make a comparision to the 90s ones.

It's safe to say that mainstream hip hop is straight wack, and in general, not as prolific as the golden age. However that's not to say that there isn't a lot of new dope artists about. We need to support and praise good music from hip hop artists, and repress wack music from rap entertainers. We may not have a new Nas, KRS, Black Moon but who's to say that anyone from the list below can't develop and produce greatness?

Joey Badass & Pro Era

ASAP Rocky & ASAP Mob

TDE crew

Flatbush Zombies

The Underachievers

Dizzy Wright

Smoke DZA

Chance

Gambino

Vic Mensa
