After re-watching the final episode and internalizing the events that ensued (particularly richard's death) ive come to the conclusion that the finale, while tragic, was rhapsodic and poetic. this was an episode that was meant to remind us that this is a show with little to no happy endings. these are gangsters and bootleggers that do terrible things. there is little in the way of salvation for any of these characters. van alden certainly started that way and now we see where he is at. im sure ill have to re-watch the entire season to get the full effect, but i do have to say this was unquestionably my favorite season to date. from the writing to the directing to the acting. everything across the board was top notch. and it only has me waiting patiently for the next season already
lets start with richard. he was, like to many other people, a favorite of mine. and towards the end, when the chain of events to his demise started, my eyes were glued to the screen until the very end. and it seemed just as fast as it happened, it also came and went. and i was just sitting staring at the screen in disbelief at what i just witnessed. even while the end credits were rolling. of course my initial reactions were, wtf? why? how? it wasnt like when jimmy died. jimmy at that time was developing a cult following so alot of frustration followed his departing. yet he deserved it. he was a snake who's character had reached the end of its inevitable course. richard on the other hand was different. he was a tormented soul who finally appeared to be seeking the happiness he deserved with tommy and julia. then it all ended. at first i thought it was way too soon. but i started to realize it was perhaps his time to go as well. the writing was on the wall the entire season in fact. to him tracking down and living with his half sister attempting to put his past behind him. also him coming the realization that he no longer had it in him to kill anymore. he also managed to get tommy away from gillian. his character came full circle. there was really nothing left for him to fulfill anymore. in fact, if terence winter had another scenario of him wiping out a horde of men in a hollywood style shootout, it wouldve just seem forced and contrived. and im also sitting here thinking about the alternatives of how that scene couldve played out. i mean lets say he killed narcissee after all. that to me wouldve been a fairy tale cop out to a character who's life and story is tragic in its essence. if he rode out to wisconsin with julia, there wouldnt have really been any conflict for him left to deal with anyway. so his character wouldve just been lingering around in the series. no instead there was a failed assassination attempt because harrow isnt the person he used to be. he's a changed man. he ultimately ends up dying in a cold and depressing way. yes its not enjoyable. yes its not something we want to see. but it is something that HAD to happen for his storyline to end with some emotional integrity. harrow is a hero. but he's a hero who's life and story is tragic. and those kinds of heroes do not get happy endings. the dream sequence at the end was masterfully done.
many were speculating whether chalky or narcisse would die in the finale, but it turns out that, perhaps at the expense of richard, both survived and will be returning next season. one can only imagine the psychological distress he's going through. richard's failed assassination attempt ended up taking out his daughter maybelle instead. so not only did he lose the club, control of the northside, and maitland, but his own daughter as well. im interested to see how his relationship with nucky will advance into the next season
I applaud the writers for not falling victim to and avoiding the "big bad villain" trope that couldve possibly abated the value of this season. we see that narcisse will live past this season. the feds have apprehended him after the onyx shooting. we later see him being interrogated by the infamous j edgar hoover. the new person hoover seems to be obsessed with is marcus garvey. hoover threatened to pin knox's murder on narcisse if he failed to cooperate with him providing him secret intelligence on garvery. it will be interesting next season to see what events play out now that hoover has narcisse in his back pocket
knox now thinks his master plan will come into fruition by finally getting all the key players of the operation in one room together. however by finally putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, nucky backs out of it at the last minute. this of course infuriates knox. to the point of visiting eli personally. he threatens to have willie jailed and goes into detail on how the inmates will love his presence inside. this causes eli to click and an intense fight occurs. im talking about everything from saws to glass vases was used. eli eventually beats knox to a bloody pulp. while im glad knox finally got his, im slightly disappointed that eli didnt face some type of consequence. i mean this was the second time he crossed his brother. and i believe nucky wont forget that, as evidence by the altercation that happened earlier. i also believe this will put a strain on their relationship. nucky later gets nabbed up by the fbi before leaving to cuba to be investigated about knox's murder. but to stay out of dodge, he arranges eli to be picked up by van alden heading to chicago. not sure i want to see him involved in that story. he really hasnt done anything deserving to be in such a position
towards the end, we see margaret moving into her new apartment with the cheeldrun. whoopty doo. i guess. whatever. i hope it burns down while she's caught pleading for her life inside
gillian is also in prison. winter said she'll be back. but im wondering what the extent of her role will be. there's not really much left to explore there. i guess perhaps she might play a role in the murder of jimmy. exposing nucky as the culprit now that the real body was found. we might also see her in a mental state of total meshuga
over in the chi, al, ralph. and van alden are sitting down theorizing about who shot up their spot. i also love how van alden has now totally embraced the underworld of crime and debauchery. def. anticipating his character next year. torrio later enters after overhearing the conversation. he assumes its weiss which was i believe o'banion's second hand man. trying to avenge his boss's death. later we see torrio about to leave, when he's ambushed by an unknown man and shot several times point blank range. including one in the neck. which aligns perfectly with what happened in reality. its left open ended and the audience is never shown who was responsible for the attack. later capone visits torrio in the hospital. torrio explains to al how its a young mans' game and he has no desire to be further involved. this can also be seen as the passing of the torch where now al is in control of the outfit. and boy the possibilities of what his character will soon do
As great and as exceptional as this season was, it left me wanting to see more. especially next season. where previous season finales have tied all the loose ends up only for the next season to be reset for another journey to unfold, this one left many story arch's unresolved (intentionally i believed) for whats to come next season. i mean we still got new york. we're on the brink of both lansky and luciano's rise to prominence. ar will be back. van alden has gone full gangster, capone is the boss of the chicago operation. not to mention chalky and narcisse will return. "farewell daddy blues" was a fitting title to the conclusion. as we say farewell to not only richard, but to another chapter of an excellent series and arguably the best show on tv. my only question now is, what the fuck do i watch until september of next year comes?
