Distribution is merely of multiplication, and since multiplication and division are commutative operands, the order in which the operations are performed will not change the out come as long as it is done correctly.

Let's look at another method of solving the problem:
We start with: 48/2(9+3)
Now, using the distributive property, we distribute 48/2 into the parenthesis: ((48/2)9+(48/2)3)
Next, we can multiply the distributed term with the terms in the parenthesis: (((48*9/2)9+((48*3)/2))
We can now finish multiplying: ((432/2)+(144/2))
And finally by doing the division by 2 last, we get: (216+72)
After adding, the answer is once again 288

So it can be said conclusively that multiplication and division are commutative operands and that changing the order of the two does not change that answer.

That's it for this edition of Math with fiat.

In this version you are distributing the entire 48/2. Which is the same as 48/2 x (9+3).

Its left to interpretation like I said before.

Cliff note version.

Is the problem

1. a / b(c + d)

or

2. a / b x (c+d)

First version = 2 as you distribute b into (c + d).

Second verison = 288 as you divide a and b then multiply by the sum of c + d.

As its written, answer = 2.

Exactly, and since we know that 48/2 is a fraction it can be distributed as if it were a single term. Even when distributing the simplified 24, we are actually distributing 24/1.

So it can be said conclusively that there is nothing wrong with distributing fractions, because really, any number can be represented as a fraction.

Sit down negro, this is one of the both answers are right questions because of the loose base of the rules. 24 also has the fight chance as well.

If the problem were

2 / 3(x+4)

Would you distribute the entire 2/3 or just the 3? Because distributing the 2/3 drastically changes this.

The fraction version is the one with the straightforward solution.

The answer is 2

48/2(9+3)=

You first add whats in the parenthesis, which is 9+3. Once you get 12 you still have to get rid of the parenthesis. Since 2 is directly connected to the parenthesis, then you multiply 2 times 12 and get 24. Then division is left so you divide 48 by 24 and end up with 2.

naw, excel just doesnt recognize that symbol as an divisor operator..it probaly only recognizes the /. math is the most definite thing on the planet as far as I know..there are no variables, there is only one answer.
